► NOTE: This trip was filmed back in December.
I had to take out a couple of parts of this video. Let me explain why. My goal in my work is always to go deeper into a culture and connect with locals to show things that can't just be read from Wikipedia. In this video, the guide touched on some taboo topics. First, the guide talked about the history of Mutahs (a traditional relationship agreement that a minority of people participated in). This was outlawed in the early 1970s and came from Persia.
Secondly, he exposed the fact that there are "land gangsters" in Lahore that actually use their power and influence to take over apartments illegally from residents who might be out of the city. They pay officials, change documents, and use intimation to carry out their criminality. Yes, this exists.
It took the guide great courage to say these things on camera; I triple checked with him that it was okay to use this content. Well as one might guess, some religious authorities, land-mob types, and the police went after him. He's been stripped of his tour-guiding license for 6 months and has had to deal with various forms of intimidation. For his safety, I removed these sections.
TH-cam is notoriously a septic tank for people dropping their pain and hate if something is shown that they don't agree with. Perhaps some of the guide's content was exaggerated, he might not have gotten everything right, there are also some language issues since English isn't his first language, but a the end of the day he gave this tour of his city with deep knowledge, heart, and pride. And to make it very clear, there are probably 1 out of 1000 guides that you can make a 30-minute video with that will be interesting enough to watch.
The vast majority of my content is positive--I focus on humanizing parts of the world that have been demonized by the western press--but I also like to present all of what I see. I don't want to sugarcoat things. Sometimes I don't always get things right but I try my hardest to show you the most authentic and truthful story I can find. This is not a vlog for telling you how cheap everything is and smashing a sandwich into the lens of the camera. And by no means do I expect everyone to agree with me on what I show. Criticism is fair game and some of it has really helped me make better content. My style often brings up certain cultural aspects that might be conflictive and I don't give clear answers. Just because I show something doesn't mean I agree or disagree with it. And it also doesn't mean it doesn't exist if it doesn't align with your values. It's for you to make your own opinion or challenge your own thoughts. That's what I like personally so that's the content I deliver to you.
If you have any thoughts to add in regards to this situation with this video please do so in the conversation here with a comment and I'll try my best to return to all of them :)
I have roughly 7 more episodes from Pakistan to come. I'm trying to post every Tuesday and Friday. I filmed this in December so I'm at home and tucked into my apartment with no travel plans. I hope you are staying safe and healthy :)
Thanks for being part of this!

Mutah is particular to the Shia sect and is not orthodox Islam. Iran is predominantly Shia so that's why there is a lot of Mutah in Iran, otherwise in Islam it is not allowed according to the orthodox view

All the people saying about the guide that he’s not representing the real image of Lahore needs to understand that whatever he’s shown is a very real aspect of Lahore , it is/was the true culture that is now almost fading. The guide has also cleared that this is only a minor part of Lahore shown as he has also told about the malls or other extravagant life of the city . Lastly kudos to the guide for literally showing this real old fading culture of Lahore as most of the Pakistanis have also not seen as most of the other guides do not show , they’re only interested in showing the the prominent sites as mentioned in this Vedio too .

You know, I had a decent life. Some good adventures but I am really envious of what you do. I am in my fifties now and am in really poor health hanging on by the proverbial thread and my days are numbered, sadly. I have no issues saying this. It's just life. Anyway, to anyone reading this, LIVE your life. Stop procrastinating. Do what you want to do. Visit places if you have the means and meet lots of people. Love lots of people and let those people love you. This sound so corny but you really start to think in this manner when you see the end coming.
This may sound odd, I'm Canadian but I don't want to die in Canada. I want to have one last mini-adventure and die somewhere else that also feels like home. I have always felt like that might be on the continent of Africa, or South Asia like Pakistan, or India or somewhere in the Middle East. I can't explain this feeling.
I love your videos and I want to say that you look identical to a friend of mine that is around twenty years younger than myself. And I mean IDENTICAL. He is a New York city native and when I first saw your video I thought you were him. I even sent your channel to him and he thought you were him. 😸

U dont have to be a muslim to say. Asalamulaikum. It simply means, "peace be upon you"

Asalambalekum is not the property of muslims

Your comment made me smile. People of the Jewish faith greet with similar 'shalom' which means 'peace'. The islamic 'Peace be upon you' is the greeting of the dwellers of paradise.

I am Lahori and I know walled city very well. This chaloo guide fooled him by selling some cheap gossips and made up stories. He just wanted some extra Tip from Peter by selling him masala stuff with no reality. Half of the stuff he told Peter has no reality. Poor Peter got into his trap and must have paid him extra.

This one video makes me one of the fans of this channel! Never saw Pakistan in such a detail manner, I am from Bangladesh but I studied in Sweden so I have a lot of friends from Pakistan and I heard a lot of stories about this city. For the first time, I just experience the beauty and culture of Lahore by watching this video. The tour guide is an awesome person and I admire his knowledge.
