  • Posting this here, too, in case anyone knows what happened at Anime Central or ACEN 2024 this year.
I still haven't heard from friends who attending the anime convention this past weekend, so if anyone has insight, please let me know what happened and if people are safe.
The rumors about what happened are super cloudy and I'm having a hard time figuring out what actually happened and if everyone is safe.

The security thing was announced a few weeks before the convention. The convention center required it and told ACen a few days before it was announced. There was no security check to get to tabletop gaming in the Hyatt basement.

I've been going to ACEN for 25 years and this is the first time I ever had anyone at the con tell me that they were suffering from post con depression days before the con even started. That's baffling to me. I wish I could do more to help.

A con friend of mine, and many others took his life on Day 0 (Thursday). There was a memorial held for him Saturday/Sunday

I was there on saturday came there around 8 and left at 5.
I can vouch for the increased security as there was a metal detector at both main entrances to the convention center. Via the hotel and parking garage. It was relatively simple just put your phone and wallet in a tray and walk through the detector.
But later in the day is when I started to see lines form, which I thought was because of the amount of people, but it turns out it was also because they had someone else at the detector with one of those hand-held metal scanners that was holding up the line. Thankfully I only had to go through twice while in my cosplay, the first time they let me through (before the second person was there) As my cosplay was a soldier and I had a lot of visible medals (which are made out of metal… lol) on my uniform. Along with some other parts that would set off the detector.
The second time was when I went back to my car to shed off some weight as the temperature was getting to me. It’s when the second guard was at the detector with the hand held one, yelling “arms up” and to keep the line moving forward. Which became a very unfortunate and slow event as some cosplayers had no metal on them and others were covered in it.
In my opinion the detectors were doing more harm than good, I ended up leaving at 5 as I was getting a bit fatigued and also because the line was getting out of control and almost out the door into the actual parking garage.
I think they should have went with a station to inspect props and weapons and add the peace string to them instead of the detectors.
As for the rumors of people getting hurt and someone dying I haven’t heard anything nor seen anything like that. I’m staying on the ‘no that didn’t happen side’ until more videos and pictures of the event resurface. But then again no one else in my group who went on different days said anything like that occurred.

I went on Saturday for a hotel party and Princess Leia showed up!!! Went back on Sunday and she found me on the expo floor and ENCHANTED ME!! I hope that she is ok. I forgot to ask her name and didn’t even get a phone number!!! Everyone seemed safe and sound the whole time … I think 😂

I'm late but the security thing was true. They announced it less then a month but more then two weeks before con. To our knowledge nothing happened, the rumor I heard yet was it was the con center that made them do it, but again that was a rumor. It was a full metal detector/check bag, though some wasn't as thorough as others from glance. Either way, it was just a routine thing it seems?

I want to keep details private but I was informed of a suicide. I feel like that’s why there’s been so much security. I don’t think ACEN has addressed this yet.

The security piece was addressed about a month prior to this. The decision was made from the city of Rosemont to implement Additional security protocols should an event go down. There's over 35K in attendance and since that's a big gathering they need to put deterrents in place should something happen.
The suicide piece however is real. Someone unalived themselves on Friday morning. The community however is split because of rumors about the person and they allegedly had done in the past.
I went Saturday and it was ok. The convention is not like how it was when I first attended some close to 20 years ago but that's normal with change.

@@PsychManI did want to try to go this year but I’m glad I didn’t because of all the security checkpoints. They really should fix that because people were crowded in the sky tunnel and it was very hot.
I know the suicide thing is real. I was told about it and I could only find more info about it on 4chan, which I of course take with a grain of salt.

I was there this year for the first time. I have epilepsy and security was barely present. I had a seizure one night so one of those ambulances were from me. Sorry. About the person who unalived themselves no idea. Security at the front door did absolutely nothing, vending machines barely worked so it was hard to stay hydrated. Was hot that day. Was there for everything So maybe it was at a hotel?

Short answer, no. I was able to confirm with a friend, who knew the guy first hand, that there was at least one person who unalived themselves. The details we have are pretty upsetting but there's a lot we don't know.

I was there it was a fucking good time. I was there Thursday to Sunday and partied hard as fuck. There wasn't an abnormal amount of ambulances. The security lines sucked, they were just a nuisance they were barely doing a good job checking shit. Idk about the suicide, sounds like bullshit to me. There would have been way more cops

What? Tell me it isn't so. I know people that go every year.
