the genesis version has a really cool rough edge with its sound and graphics. propably one of the scariest 16 bit games (not that there were that many scary games overall)
For me, Genesis version was the first one I ever saw. I like the visual smoothness and the extensive voice coverage of the Arcade version, but everything else, for me at least, feels too "snappy" about it - instant transitions between the screen are the most obvious examples, but the gameplay also feels a little bit too fast. That's why I personally prefer the Genesis version.
@@user-nx5nx9 Different. Not better. Genesis uses clear FM synthesis, while the SNES uses poor quality samples. Works in its favor sometimes, especially with FX, but sometimes it doesn't and the music sounds horrendous in comparison to the Genesis. Case in point: The Subway track on MK3. Listen to both side by side and try telling anyone with a straight face that it sounds better on the SNES.
I have no idea why, but I’ve always loved the music/sound effects in this game in particular on Genesis. I know they’re compressed to absolute hell, but I’ve always liked the way they sound. >_>
16 Bit MK games are all about the AI manipulation - basically, you can force the Opponent to do specific things by doing specific corresponding things yourself. The irony is, if you tried to play honestly without trying to manipulate AI yourself, you'd likely almost never win on Hard difficulty, let alone Hardest, because AI would be cheating on YOU. This run was crafted with the manipulation mechanics in mind, while Save States helped to speed things up greatly.
Vanilla version on the Genesis was better than UMK3, to me, because there's more graphically detailed levels (candles in the church, torches elsewhere...) Is there the cemetery stage on the included on this version, though?? (my favorite one) [EDIT: found out that it is missing, both on the Genesis and the SNES, due to lack of storage...)
Yeah, I too think that, as far as only Genesis versions go, MK3 > UMK3 - there are just too many cuts to the graphics, levels, environment, characters, etc. And yes, it's a shame that graveyard level is missing, I was looking for it when activating cheats (in the arena selection section), there definitely was no graveyard level there. I'm planning to do all the Arcade MKs (already did MK1 a while ago), so eventually we'll get to it.

Every character has unique button combinations for stage fatalities. The only thing I can say without any further context is that you probably need to hold block if the combination you're trying to input for any specific character involves buttons like Up or Punch/Kick that is also NOT the last button in the sequence. The guides that I've read before practicing the game didn't always specify this, so I had to experiment all the time.
@@duendemisterioso7188 Well, as I said additional context was needed. Yes, I too had problems with Cyrax's Stage Fatality, and it seems that it's not just Y/B/Y as stated in most of the internet guides - and unfortunately I can't remember how I solved this one back then. All I can say it's buggy, compared to UMK3 - it actually works as intended in Ultimate.
Yeah, that's actually one of the things that the MK games could have improved upon way back then. For instance, it could work just like Stage Fatalities - a special combo would launch the opponent exactly like the uppercut, but with the added effect of breaking the ceiling and changing the arena. While the normal uppercut would just work as a plain move without any transitions.
I remember that this information was added as his Bio in one of the games, I just don't remember what exact game it was in. Probably 4/Gold, but I'm not sure.
It was either cut content or never meant to be shown in the first place. Theres an unused audio file in the game that depicts Johnny cages funeral, it’s speculated that it was either meant to be a scene in the game or the audio is just something leftover from an ad or commercial.
@ The audio is a great find, but as far as Johny's death being cut content - nope, it's fully canon and is right in his UMK3 Bio Screen - it's stated he was killed, but cheated Death thanks to Shao Kahn's attempted merger of the worlds. Somewhat wacky, but not unrealistic considering some other Characters' Bios in that very same game.
Yeah, in this game they're unlocked with cheat codes, but they're still 2P exclusive picks - you can see them when choosing a character in 1P mode, but you can't put the cursor over any of them. If you force the selection of either of them through gameshark, then you can play as that character, but the game will crash as soon as you reach at the tournament outcome screen.
It is tool-assisted in a sense that save states are used, but it is not TAS. TAS is a speedrun that uses techniques more advanced than mere save states, such as frame advancement, for crafting "perfect" speedruns where every frame's input is justified by the overall effectiveness criteria, usually for competitive reasons. But if it's so important to you, you can always call this a "poor man's tas", if you want. I don't mind.
Well yeah, MK3 feels a LOT smoother than UMK3, but that because it was a trade-off - less animations and smoothness, but more content. It's debatable what would be a better solution, but that's how they handled it.
@@ammarali7239 Oh it's only me that's the human player, I assure you. It's just that I manipulate CPU opponent behavior by doing specific moves myself.
As someone growing up with Genesis, I disagree. I think it's a matter of personal prefference. SNES version's music is good, but I personally preffer more gritty sound of Genesis, both in general and in this game's case. MK1 is even better example of this, but that's different topic ofcourse.

Yes, the UMK3 is technically both the upgrade to MK3, and a separate game at the same time, so I'll do the walkthrough for it separately soon.
