Windshield and Rear Window Glass install using OER Sealant Tape Kit. Second Gen Firebird and Camaro

- Pretty easy to do with some help a couple good buddies. Using OER Sealant Tape Kit for the second gen F-Body. Front windshield install and rear glass too. Using the OER sealant tape that is similar to the butyl tape used by the factory. No mess! Urethane sealant is a modern and popular way to install your windshield but it requires dams and blocks to set the proper height. The goo can squish inside your car and mess up your trim. This tape just sticks on the glass and then you line up the windshield and set it in. Push on the window to seat it and move on to your trim. I did it, so can you! I like the tinted glass. I'm not that far along yet with my 1975 trans am project. But i keep watching your videos over and over lol. They are a big help to me. You do a great job of explaining everything.
Thank you very much for the feedback and im very happy that the videos are helpful!
I'm preparing to restore my original owner 1971 Camaro SS350 and reinstalling the back glass is first on my list. Your video was very helpful. Thanks.
Sounds like a sweet car. It really isn’t a bad job as long as you’ve got some good help.
I'm never going to stop complementing that paint. Its looks so dam good.
Thanks buddy, i feel the same way. I just love that it has a really different tone in different lighting conditions. Ive been driving it and its kinda dangerous in the parking lot... lol... meaning that as im walking away i cant stop looking back at it. Bout got hit the other day> Probably end up tripping and falling one of these days.
Great job. Car is looking great. I've been a bit shy about pulling my glass on my Pontiac. Seeing your video gives me a boost of confidence.
Glad I could help!
I LOVE the paint colour!!!
Me too! thanks buddy!
great video very helpful i also got my windshield from auto city classics you were spot on with all the comments about them
Nice. Glad to hear that you had a good experience too!
Thank you. About to remove and re install my rear glass so we can put the roll cage in. Eventually, we are replacing the front glass due to the cracks.
Awesome. Glad I could help. Using that sealant tape and having some good help made this install super easy.
Looks great Nate! Getting closer!
Heck yeah! Thanks buddy!
That’s where I got my windshield from… awesome quality, that’s exactly how I installed mine although I used a primer to promote adhesion…
Right on! I was pretty impressed with Auto City Classic so i felt like i wanted to pass that on to folks.
This was SUPER helpful thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much the video explains perfectly
Thanks! That’s my hopes. I was a little intimidated to do mine, but it really isn’t that hard using that sealant ribbon and with some good help.
Awesome, thanks so much
No problem!
Looks great.
Thank you! Bought time to rock and roll!
Awesome 😊
Nice work. I contemplated doing this, but I decided to have a pro do this with the urethane today. Same glass you have, love it. One pisser was my antenna was missing the coax connector, so I now have to see if I can fix that :(
Yikes. No coax. Dang!
Informative video. Gotta do my glass on my 85 Mustang. Sub’d.
Thanks for the sub! It’s really not too hard with some help.
Are there rubber blocks to align the rear glass like you showed on the front? and to keep it from slipping backward?
I don't know if you're aware or not but you have one cool ass neighbor
Absolutely! The best!!
Great video, thanks for sharing! I'm preparing to pull the windshield on my '74 Formula 400 and the sealant looks like it is some sort of fabric coated in adhesive. I'm perfectly sure it is original, as the windshield has never been replaced (yet). I would use that sort of material if I knew a vendor. Do you have any thoughts on that? I know the butyl style was used for first gens (my '68 Bird and Camaro have it). Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Good video. I noted that the only setting blocks you used were at the two bottom locations to set the gap at the top of the window. Didn't you use any setting blocks around the window to ensure that you did not compress the butyl too much? You don't want the glass sunk too far down or else your trim will have a gap to the glass. If you didn't use the setting blocks, how did your trim to glass gap turn out?
I only used the two at the bottom> From what ive read, the butyl like rope will squish just right. My trim turned out good. I think you only need the blocks to set the depth if you are using a urethane sealant from a caulking gun.
@Heavy Pedal Garage- Doing the same on my 68 Camaro- I was wondering did you paint your trim. powdercoat it, or buy it black?
I painted it satin black using a UreChem product. It is holding up well.
wow Nath, you have made the install look so easy - same here - i have removed many glasses - installed none - lols - what's the go between the metal & plastic trim clips ? did i see you use plastic ones in the rear ?
Thanks Buddy. so i used the metal clips on the front and back. they were two different kits, so for some reason they were different colors. I liked the metal clips since installing the trim can be kinda tough. I would be afraid of breaking the plastic ones.
I never seal using tape. Need to do my el camino after bodywork. How did the radio antena work on front glass? Did you weld up antenna hoke?
Antenna hooked up just fine. There was a cable and plug for it in the cowl that was easily accessible.
Did those installation rubber blocks come with the windshield or did you have to order those separately? If you did, can you please provide me the part number for that kit great video by the way.
Pretty sure the blocks came with the sealant kit I bought. The OER one in the video.
First video that popped up for me looking for a glass install video. Great job Nate I’ve never used the flexible seals before, how are they holding up ?
Thanks Brother. The seals are holding up great! Super easy install for us DIY guys. Glad to see that ‘Mero of yours making some noise! Can’t wait to see her rolling!
Isn't pinchweld primer needed before installing the windshield? It's made especially for buytl tape
i cleaned the pinchweld with solvent. I think the legit primer is for the urethane type sealant that comes in a tube. Don't take my word for it though. if you are doing this process, i recommend following the manufacturers recommendations for whatever system you are using.
I'm working on a 1975 Firebird Formula just like yours and I'm ready to install the windsheild and back glass. Two questions. 1. Which type clips for your front and back glass did you use? The plastic or metal. 2. Wher do you get the OER sealant tape for the glass?
I used the metal clips. Search google for “oer windshield back glass sealer K4122”. Amazon summit JEGS classic industries and other places cary it.
Where did you get the spacers for the front windshield? i cant find them anywhere
They came with the kit.
What about the plastic pices in the lower cornners
I dont think there were any plastic pieces on this firebird.
How did you treat the channel before install 3m panel adhesive or epoxy?
i wiped the channel with acetone. I didnt use any panel adhesive or epoxy.
@@HeavyPedalGarage OK you didn't have any bare spots of metal showing? I guess I will get my car in full paint then scuffed down the clear coat a little bit then urethane primer
Great video. Thanks. For your rear glass, does your headliner wrap around the pinch weld lip? Were there any concerns with that and the OER tape?
I had no issues with the headliner. It tucked up under the interior trim, no problem. OER tape and glass didnt touch the liner at all. This is one of the reasons I went with the tape. It doesn’t squish into the car like a urethane sealant from a tube would. With the tube stuff, dams and spacers need installed to try and keep the goo out of the interior and also to set the proper depth of the glass. The tape seemed much simpler for a DIY.
@@HeavyPedalGarage Thanks for the info!!
Did you use the pinchweld butyl primer or just make sure you had a clean solid surface
I did not use any primer. I just wiped the metal and the class really good. I think i used a light amount of acetone.
Did the OER kit also come from Auto City Glass?
I believe i got the kit from summit or maybe classic industries.
@@HeavyPedalGarage Thanks!
What size wheels and tires front and rear?
if you check my channel, i did a video on the wheels and tires. 17x9" rims, video will have the backspacing, i cant remember. 255 50 17 up front and 275 50 17 in the back
👍😎🏁
Thanks!
Hello in wondering about something I’m pulling my rear glass to reseal it I also think it was sitting to low and my mouldings were not sitting flush with the glass anyway did you put that filler panel that covers the torque rods for the deck lid on before you sealed the glass it looks like it’s on just wondering if it matters thanks mike
I did have the filler panel installed before i did the glass. i think it would be best to do it this way, as some of the glass may overlap the lip of the panel. Also, the screw locations that hold down the filler panel could be difficult to access with the glass in. If you shoot me an email to heavypedalgarage@gmail.com ill send you a picture of where the glass meets the filler panel so you can see how tight a fit it is. thanks, that's a good question.
