My tiefling ranger finally got a flying snake as a pet last session. It had belonged to a friendly NPC but said NPC got poisoned and is in an indefinite coma. My ranger had recently mortally injured a bird that snitched on us to the bad guy and let the snake eat it (snitches get murdered, it's a rule), so it was entrusted to me.
It's my first D&D pet, so I'm excited to learn what it can do!

The Gelatinous Ice Cube is a new canon familiar that was made for D&D's 2020 Celebration. You should check it out, it's really cool!

In the supplement book Darkhold: Secrets of the Zhentarim, as a Zhentarim perk once you get to 'Wolf' rank, one of the rewards you can choose is the ability to cast Find Familiar, with the familiar taking the form of a Flying Snake. The other two choices were an enchanted Banesword, or the 'Manshoon's mage hand' cantrip (essentially, a Force Choke attack). So if you're playing a Zhentarim character, this familiar is very fitting.

This seems better than the Owl to me at a glance. It covers land, sea, and air on top of Flyby and Blindsight.

True, the Owl has better stats though. I also find that they're a little better at not drawing too much attention haha!

It's actually a pretty tough and subjective question. It really comes down to both familiars' scouting potential for me. Flying snakes are overall slightly better for combat with their significantly higher AC and slightly higher HP, Dex, and Con, but they're absolutely crippled by their complete lack of Darkvision. It's cool that they have stuff like Blindsight and all, but only being able to sense things 10 feet in front of them when they're sneaking down a pitch black hall full of potential traps and enemies and alarms is just not gonna cut it. Owls, comparatively, are easily the best scouting familiar in the game due to their 120ft Darkvision, +3 bonus to Perception and Stealth, passive Perception of 13, and advantage on Perception checks that use hearing or sight (which, btw, adds +5 to your passive perception if sight or sound are involved, giving them a total of 18). If you want to pick a single familiar and stick with it, I'd have to go with the owl. The flying snake's slight edge in survivability (and I've gotta emphasize just how slight that edge is. Melee attacks aren't a problem because of flying and Flyby and they still die instantly the moment they're caught in any damaging AoE effect, save or no save. The only thing they really have an advantage in is dodging arrows and other single target ranged attacks) really just isn't enough to make up for its complete inability to effectively scout out dangerous terrain for the party.

you know what makes this familiar good. It's venomous. now it cant use that venom since they cant take the attack action but you could milk it and collect that venom to coat weapons.

If you multiclass as a beastmaster ranger it gets the attack action and bonuses, so there's a thought.

I gave an Artificer character in one of my campaigns a Flying Sword for a familiar. It is made of Adamantine.
It can’t attack or speak, and so I role-play it as kind of cowardly. It can approximate speech by vibrating. It often “whistles” when it’s nervous and “screams”
      when it’s scared. Think of R2D2! 🗡

Strange. I can't seem to find anything that says Flying Snakes can be used as Variant Familiars like Gazers and Crawling Claws or as Alternative Familiars like Tressym and Flying Monkeys. What's the material for this?
