Railways in the UK sadly no longer create the sense of optimistic travel felt in the film - I rode behind Crepello many times in the 70's - thanks for posting!
Lovely little video. That journey by train would have been tiring by the time you arrived at Edinburgh but by car in those days it would have been a real nightmare.
Oh if we could go back in time. This film was taken by my father, the Standard 8mm film length was only 4 minutes, two minutes per side and quite expensive so a compromise had to be taken. I'd do it again one day and include Darlington.
@@platform650 would be good having a comparison. Darlington is changing big time, a new platform is being built for southbound trains and a new one for Middlesbrough/Saltburn services. Massive new car park and station building also being built, big changes for Bank Top is certainly changing. Hopefully all done before the double centenary celebrations of the railways.

The focus these days is not the joy of travelling but rather the sense of achievement as you arrive at your destination somewhere close to 'on time'.
What a great film. Makes me wish I could travel back in time and make the journey myself.
60-odd years have passed and I still recall the journey. Whilst the route is still used the train journey if anything is over too soon.

Yes it was!
Some fantastic footage 👍🏻
I am minded to redo the trip sometime soon.
Brilliant piece of film!!
I cant help but think Britain was a nicer place back then ?
The countryside has not changed too much, life though was less frenetic and more gentle in the 60's.
Some of it has not changed much, but a lot of it is VERY different 😂
I totally agree. Shame the cine quality has deteriorated but there are many recognisable places & buildings.
Can’t believe that it didn’t show Darlington, the birthplace of the Railways and all that!!
