    These are all great points and deserve a lot more likes. I am tired of these old money shortform videos that are basically just screenshots of ralph lauren and tommy hilfiger ads. That is not necessariliy old money for all. It is just an aesthetic for some. There are plenty of people that come from generational wealth that do not dress that way, even among white people.

      Thank you, Heidi! I’ve been thinking arching these tik tok videos on this topic for over 2 years now and was just getting tired of it. Yeah, it is very telling that people who make those videos end up giving example of same brands and bags as an example of old money/quiet luxury looks. Extreme wealth gives access to brands, designer which a regular person won't even hear of or even got a chance to buy.

    Thank you so much for this video! I watched a video for the first time of Anna Bey and I was so disgusted by her. As a woman of color I also find this topic to be a micro aggression against BIPOC women, elitist and just gross. I grew up poor with a Vietnamese mother who has survived war and guess what, I’m doing well now and can afford nice things. I’m proud of the evolution I have been able to make in my life and if it bothers “old money” people ..I don’t care. I’m happy and proud of my accomplishments coming from where I came from. I also think it is interesting that elitist types want to purchase urban culture clothing and style but when we can afford designer items they’re not okay with that? Colonized thinking. Appreciate you speaking on this ❤️‍🩹

    You’re exactly right in that there’s been this shift to quiet luxury (or back to quiet luxury, as this debate crops up ever few years) mostly by people who want to other themselves from the “tasteless middle class/new money/whatever” because they want to appear better than others. And yes, it’s SO white-centric. There are billionaires in Singapore and India and elsewhere , like you said, who dress flashier than any Vanderbilt…and probably are richer too 😂 And if we’re seriously talking “old money,” the OLDEST old money, historically, isn’t in the pockets of white people.

    • @therealshakeen
      @therealshakeen  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Ah that last point is key! Also, in older established civilizations, the family name is heavily valued in society that is entirely removed from wealth. So in a way, “old money” isn’t about how much money someone has, but family history and reputation.

    It’s funny that old money is commended when that money was earned a long time ago and passed down generationally. The old money of today had it given to them. New money, however, had to bust their ass to get that new money and succeed in life. They did it against all odds and still did it. I’ll celebrate new money long before I ever celebrate old money.

    • @therealshakeen
      @therealshakeen  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is spot on!
      You know how people say (which is a pretty accurate observation) that it takes one generation to build, next one to sustain, and the 3rd to destroy or grow.
      Most of the time the 3rd generation blows it all, it’s rare to see the 3rd generation sustain that growth for it to be classified as “old money”. You are so correct: old money started with new money. They were the ones that made the sacrifices and were resourceful in their wealth building. The next generation did get it handed to them, but they saw their parents struggle so they would Atleast enjoy the money (cause they saw their parents didn’t) while still not abusing the wealth. The grandkids is where things can go haywire.
      Thank you for adding this very crucial point!

I have been watching various and numerous videos on quiet luxury to learn more about it, but none of them have been as insightful as this one, there were so many juicy nuggets you pointed out that made me want to share them with my fiancé, which sparked a whole conversation. You’re right, it is not the old money people going on TH-cam talking about “quiet luxury.” So, why are we trying to be something that does not even exist or was created by not quiet luxury people?

      Thank you so much Deborah for your kind words. I am so happy we resonate the same. Exactly, I feel this quiet luxury debate is a battle between people of the middle class. The people criticizing and belittling the fashion choices of others really don't have any authority to do so - they are just regurgitating what they hear to shade others and make themselves feel better. I know this is a topic of luxury, but there is so much more to life we should be concerning ourselves with!

    To me, quiet luxury is doing the things you want to do, being wherever you want to be, and taking time-off anytime you want without it severely impacting the people around you. I have always admired adults in my family who have been established who can just pick up tabs when we eat out without checking anything and just give CC just like that… but then again, I did not come from money 😅 In terms of bag, I tend to lean to non-logo more because of safety and comfort. But is it possible that the association of luxury bags with white people due to these being European brands to begin with? And Europe at that time (and largely now too) was pretty homogenous when these luxury brands started and they market locally in Europe first. As the world becomes more connected it makes sense they started recruiting more local ambassadors to market in more continents.

    • @therealshakeen
      @therealshakeen  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your first point is a million dollar answer! it really is true wealth to have freedom with your time and have an abundance mindset that allows you to be generous!
      The latter point is also valid - absolutely! A lot of these luxury designers are European and didn’t quite get introduced to other continents till much later. Luxury positional goods were different among other cultures - often it was jewellery, precious metals and stones.
      The point I was making is that a lot of these videos circulating describing the “old money aesthetic” often portray a specific phenotype. These videos rarely show a visible minority as “old money” even though old money/generational wealth exists across various cultures and ethnicities! Thanks for sharing your comment!

    Another point I wanted to make I disagree with the statement that old money is only associated with white ppl.
    I’m nigerian and what you said definitely resonates with the upper/political class in nigeria and we’re all black.
    There are people who have “old money” and never worked a day in their lives and would not want to be associated with the rest of the population. I think the appropriate term for this would be classism.
    The old money aesthetics is not as prevalent in India and other societies because their middle class technically does not exist. The income inequality there cannot be compared to other western nations where it it easier to move from lower class to middle/upper middle class.
    So it’s easier for there to be a monopoly of “old money “ people having and showing off these nice things because they know the average person is very unlikely to amass that type of wealth in their lifetime.
    Imo this is a false equivalence.
    I think it’s human nature to feel “special” or exclusive in wealth, jobs, relationships, or anything in life. When that exclusivity is not scarce anymore, it looses its value. Overall this just shows how far we’ve come and lucky we are to be in a society to afford these things because tbh, these are first world problems 🙂

      Just to clarify: What I said - which is a key point - was that on social media, especially recently, the aesthetic of “old money” portrayed is often using white phenotypes. Even though we know that in many other countries, generational wealth exists. This doesn’t mean that old money doesn’t exist in other countries. I think the better point to make is tastefulness. Loud and obnoxious to me looks like someone who has brand logos from top to bottom, mix and match, and projects an image that competes for attention in itself, and don’t seem to know what balance and tastefulness looks like. I would equate it to being in a room in a house where there is no focal point and where the couch is in the way of the entrance and the TV is in front of a fireplace and things are everywhere and not in its proper place and the space isn’t optimized. Quiet luxury is an inward thing. I love it and I prefer it. I love the confidence that it exudes and the ones that I know of who wear it (not all) carry a certain unseen yet tangible confidence inside. Not snooty or arrogant. There is a difference. Not everyone who wears and prefers quiet luxury is insecure and an elitist-that’s also projection and judgment on your part. I love tastefulness and elegance and quiet confidence that emanates from the inside and moves outward. And we all know not every high end brand name is a quality item. We are all in a style journey and we are all allowed to evolve and have certain preferences. At the end of the day, we all decide who we want to be, how we want to spend our money, what we want to project, what we want to achieve in our lifetime.

      I really like how you described tastefulness, Elle, with the example of interior decor. Exactly, quiet luxury is a type of confidence. Just to clarify - I am not calling those who prefer or wear the quiet luxury aesthetic as "insecure and elitist", not at all. Rather, it's the people who make videos putting down others who opt for logos. What secure person would make videos putting down others? See my point? I thought I was clear on that statement at beginning of the video.

    I am sick of this, some of us were already into brands no one knew. My first Bottega was back in 2005, no one knew the boring looking plain woven bag or could justify the cost, I did not care, still got it. These kids thinking wearing a plain black bag from the row or a beige jumper will make the a Rothschild. So you want to fake being old money by wearing dull style? It's OK if that's your taste but to wear solely for an "elevated look " to seem something you know you are not is just laughable. I make 6 figures and can afford luxury, does not make me "old money" I did not inherit wealth. I just never liked flashy style. My sister in law who comes from money ; generational wealth has always been into loud fashion and logos and runway pieces. She like unique and loud; she's still old money.

It's my first and only mini square and what sold it for me is the hanging charms. Other then that, I would not have purchased. I didn't purchase because it had a CC on it, I purchased it because I personally thought it was beautiful. Ok my last vent! Lol. It's not to you, no way no! I agree with FABULOUS IRENE's comment down there.
    Owning many luxury handbags doesn't show how rich you really are.
    For example, Amal Clooney's husband (George Clooney) has a net worth of about 500 million USD, so she can probably buy all of the luxury handbags in the world if she really wanted to. But I've never seen her carrying handbags from Chanel, Hermes, or Louis Vuitton. She usually carries handbags that look high quality but are understated. She's not even embarrassed to carry a Michael Kors handbag. Yet she's so confident and beautiful and fashionable and she is a world-class intelligent lawyer who advocates human rights.
    Even though I love and enjoy my luxury handbags from Chanel, LV, and Hermes, I think Amal Clooney sets a good role model for younger women. You don't need a luxury handbag in order to be a successful and beautiful person.

I know some people who are very wealthy and they choose to wear very expensive yet not recognizable apparel and accessories because they are humble and don't want to be flashy. You wouldn't know they are rich if you met them. You would think they are well groomed perhaps. They do drive nice cars though lol. I also noticed alot of this has to do with culture. What is also forgotten in this discussion is the religious background and the upbringing of the people, because that also has an effect on how wealth is presented to the public. I can only speak for europe here, but there are significant differences between different countries. Behind it stands tradition, which is considered to be appropriate. Quiet luxury, stealth wealth, whatever you want to call it - this trend cyclical and reoccur every couple of years. In 2008 after the Lehman Brothers crisis and the financial markets collapse the affluent reverted to this tendency to "dress down" and not showing obvious logos. I remember well, the rich New Yorkers would shop at Hermès and specifically request white shopping bags instead of the orange to avoid being targeted or judged.
