    I'm so glad you made this video! All summer I've told my friends how heavenly my garden smells bc of all my oncidiums (sherry baby) & zygopetalum. But whenever they come over its the middle of the day and the fragrance is dull to almost absent. I explained it is the time of day, but they seemed to think I'm just making it all up. I'm sending this video to all of them! haha. Thank you!

    I had a very stubborn Phal. Pinlong Cheris that didn't release her scent for a long time. I almost completely forgot I had it when she finally decided it was time! Half of the flowers were wilting and I'd forgotten to water her (oops), but for some reason she decided it was the perfect opportunity. Her scent wafted a long distance from my window to my bed!

      hehe orchids can always surprise you, I'd be so happy if one day my Mini Mark decides to smell, I always sniff it actually in hopes it will happen :P

    I just bought two fragrant zygopetalum, one smells like orange zest and the other one like yellow grapefruit zest. I am, however, surprised no one mentions dendrobium... The non-hybrid varieties often have a faint but beautiful, complex scent which IMO matches expensive perfumes. Just keep them moist, stress-free and out of the sun.
    Unrelated: One of my office phalaenopsis has attracted a "friend", a very delicate clover-like growth with three leaves and that is now going into bloom with yellow flowers. They seem to get along very well for a couple of months now. The pot only has a standard orchid mix so I was surprised that something else (other than moss) could thrive in such a medium.

    This is an interesting subject, and your video answers many questions people often have. It's interesting how many things might influence on the fragrance production. My oldest phal didn't have a fragrance for her first years, but later it surprised me with a fragrance. It could be her age, or it could be because after 4 years or so, I moved her from the kitchen to the bedroom and kept it on a humidity tray and under artificial lights. She reacted very well to it, and also developed a fragrance for the first time. Maybe the warmer temperature, humidity, fan, lamps and lower night temperatures all influenced on that. You mentioned coelogyne cristata. Mine almost had a fragrance (I think I felt "something", but hard to notice), but a friend who visited me once when she was in bloom said she could feel a fragrance, even though I didn't.

      hehe that's interesting :D I think I would be pretty frustrated if my friends felt a fragrance and I didn't hehehe

    this video has helped a lot - now I'll just be patient and wait for the new orchids to surprise me when they decide to release their fragrance. I have experienced what you said with a no ID cattleya that suddenly gave a beautiful fragrance after a few weeks of none. Thanks for your excellent information videos-- I tend to check all other info against what you say before applying it .

    Thank you for making this video..it explains a lot about some of my own experiences with fragrances and my orchids. I think you are "bang on" with your explanations! Cheers!

    My phal pinlong cherry had no scent until she was moved outdoors. So that might be something to try... switch out the growing environment if at all possible. Thanks for another excellent, informative video!

      That's interesting :D she must like it better in the outdoor environment.

      MissOrchidGirl Agreed! IMO greater heat, temperature change, light, humidity and air movement outdoors.

    Hello, Danny!
    Very interesting subject again! I have a small issue related to fragrance. My first ever fragrant orchid purchase was a Liodoro, which i was happy to buy not in best shape but i did my best to bring it back to health. When i bought it i loved the flower which was somewhat pale (yellowish) compared to the pinkish center we can see on yours, and i smelled very mildly and fruity to me which i loved. The blooms faded but the spike stayed green so i didn't cut it. The plant produced many new roots and 1 leaf for me and 1 day few months later it woke up a nod and made new flowers on the old spike. To my surprise they were pinkish like yours even purplish to my eyes (very intense colors and contrast) and to my biggest disappointment the fragrance of sweet fruits i was expecting was replaced by something i can only refer to as "horse poop"! I could not support the new fragrance at all, and every time i was passing by i had to take breath of air and hold it. At the moment it is producing more roots and yet another leaf but i am honestly scared to see flower spike on it, since that horrible smell came out of only 3 flowers i can't imagine what would be on a brand new spike and its potential of flowers. Are my concerns ridiculous or the second rebloom of the same spike is misleading me?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Isa, well I can relate to the horse poop smell, I have a few Encyclias (old term) that smell like that :))) ok, you can cut the current spike if you cannot bare the smell and wait for another spike and see how that is. If it still smells awful, it might be a hybrid problem. I hope not, this orchid had a great sweet scent actually :(

    You know Dani, I always wondered why those large beautiful phalaenopsis with many blooms didn't have a fragrance. I thought perhaps since their blooms last for many months and they can put out two and three spikes loaded with over a dozen blooms. They don't necessarily need to release a fragrance to attract their polleniser. While other orchids produce less blooms, have a shorter life and are not as attractive must work harder in a short cycle of life to attract their polleniser with their bee-dazzling perfume. Anyways that's my thought.

      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Blanca, well those big Phals in the stores are complex hybrids, man made hybrids that focus on large and showy flowers rather than small fragrant ones, so many genes were lost in hybridization. But as an idea yes, the species have adapted their flowers to their pollinators, the night fragrant orchids are white as the colors are useless in the night time. Angraecums developed long spurs so only a type of moth pollinates them, not every moth with all kinds of pollen the orchids cannot use and so on :)

    That Ikea plant stand would be ideal for my place, but it seems they are not selling it at this time.
    Google give plenty of results showing your type of stand, but searching the Ikea site for "socker" returns a few houseplant items, including a "plant stand on wheels", but that thing is just a dolly for one plant.

    • @MissOrchidGirl

      Yes IKEA decided not to manufacture this stand anymore, but I hope they will bring an improved version soon :) it was a very useful stand

    Great video! As a fragrance lover it's important to know all this. Like I for example got a Sharry Baby and the smell doesnt fill the room, maybe the next flowering will :D.
    My Phal Kaoda Twinkle lost all its leaves, but the roots are still green and look ok. The stem looks very yellow and dried up tho. Is it possible to keep taking care of it so it produces a new leaf or a keiki? At this point I dont care to be really set back, I prefer not to lose a rare hybrid :

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh sorry about the Kaoda, :( I am not sure if it will sprout anything, in case of stem rot the roots die last. Keep it still maybe the axis is not completely destroyed, but.. it if is don;t worry, happens to all of us as you can see :)

    I here Zygos should smell this is the 3rd time it bloomed still no smell. I think it has to do with my hybred.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, some Zygos have a more powerful smell than others, others smell like spices rather than flowers, so it really depends on what type of Zygo you have :)

      +MissOrchidGirl ...am si eu dubii legate de vasul de ceramica pt vanda..dar la vitanal.net am gasit ceva modele de vase cu gauri f mari..unele sunt chiar frumoase.😊..si pana acum una din vande a facut si flori..ceea c l mine e premiera😉..am incercat si restul metodelor dar din criza d timp si conditii de apartament..😓..vasul d ceramic e singura mea sansa.
      vezi s tu....poate iti place un vas...ca eu am incercat sa dau singura gauri in vas clasic..udat in prealabil...dar nu e la fel,uneori cedeaza...crapa...s nu ai aceeasi ventilatie.

      that's the beauty of orchids, they offer many things to like, not just one, so they are suited for every taste :D however, I have a feeling that if you ever get to smell a brassavola, a Liodoro or a sharry baby you will change your mind ;)
