I think an important sewing skill is perseverance! Working through problems because it never goes exactly how you wanted or expected. Catherine, I think you showed that today 🥳
My favorite line… “I’m going to lose my notches.” I feel that way almost every day! I have to commend Catherine on her fearless rotary cutting! So empowering! Also, I was so surprised to see my employer as one of her advertisers. 😊
O.M.G., I must have watched your tutorial 20 times ! I was determined to learn how to shorten suit sleeves. To make it worse , it was a kid suit. Guess what ? I did it !!! I never knew I had so much patience in me... Yep !!! 😅❤
Catherine, I enjoy ALL of your content, but to me, this was one of your most entertaining videos because you really wrestled with that beast and it turned out great!👍🙌💪
The Dritz Snag-nab-it is my favorite tool for pulling snags to the back! One end is a large tapered needle tip, and the back half is knurled like a rasp! You just insert at the base of the snag and push through, and the rasp pulls the snag. So quick and easy, especially on short snags that would be difficult to twist around the pin.
You make sewing with knits, especially chunky ones, so much more easy to contemplate, and your tip on using non-stretch tap on the shoulders will be a game changer!
OMG !!! the sweater ribbing at the bottom just ties it all together and makes for an amazing look. WOW, this was a labor of love for sure but it turned out so cool and I just love it. I don't know if I have the patience that you have, or the knowledge...lol...but you really pulled this off. Great video.
Just love this. To add a pocket you could fold up the grey scarf and leave the fringe across the top of the pocket as decoration. You continue to inspire me.
This is brilliant Catherine. I love the combination of colours and textures. Would you consider doing a video about choosing fabrics? Do you have any colour guidelines for successful combinations? Or little golden rules when combining textures or fabrics. The kind of thing that you do intuitively but may need to be pointed out to a novice like me.
@@elaineforan4751 Thanks, Elaine. I think it really is intuitive. I guess I could do some examples of things I would NOT add in and why. Maybe that would be helpful?
At this time in life, I'm not going to try this; but, I was thinking that knitted samples (that were made to test the yarns, needle sizes, and stitch patterns) could be used to make patchwork sweaters. I have seen them used to make blankets. Crochet block samples could be mixed in also. Your patchwork pull over sweater is cute on you. You might be able to make a matching head band out of the striped piece you were thinking of using for the neckband. You also might be able to make a cute matching hat out of the left over scraps. I love patchwork.
I DID learn something from this project. I WILL NOT be trying it for myself. Once I hit a bump in the road I give up. I don't need another project added to the unfinished pile in my sewing room. I so admire you for persevering through all the challenges this sweater provided you with.
A FRANKENSWEATER!!! I laughed and was even more invested when I came back to this video and you were pleading for the project to work out as it fell of off of you😂 I loved the twists and turns and the alternate ending ❤🎉
I am so enjoying this. Including your challenges, which you muster through. I do this (patchwork) type thing with t shirts...for various things, skirts, kimonos, scarves....etc. but I appreciate what you said in the beginning re: the costs because I've made skirts from t shirts in the past, 1 in particular which cost me GOD KNOWS WHAT (its just that I'd collected them over time) because t shirts aren't even that cheap any more and you have to think about how many you need for any given project so. I so appreciate this. (I also want to commend you on the video aspect of this. The amount of taping, positioning the camera, redoing, and splicing the entire thing together WHILE making a garment. Well done!!! (in short...I love your Frankensweater!!!)
It's so cute :) and the bottom looks way better now. When you were cuting the red section, I was hoping you'd take the ribbing off to finish the whole garment later, but the grey looks even better.
This made me laugh out loud! Been there so many times.... and you just keep moving forward... I liked both versions. Catherine we would have such fun if we were ever sewing together! There's so many times I make mistakes in my sewing, but I just carry on and show everyone how to put it right or change plans. It's what you've got to do... Happy sewing!
Oh Catherine! I think I’d wear that sweater every chance I could after having gone thru all the alterations that you did! Definitely worth the effort; it came out great!! You’re amazing! What an informative and entertaining video😁
Your processes never cease to amaze me! Not sure I have the patience or the eye for style you do, but I’m always entertained by your videos. Keep up the good work👏
Love watching you do these up cycles! I’m not interested in a Frankenstein-sweater, but maybe I will be more comfortable adjusting the fit of a thrifted sweater. I will have to go find one!
Love this project! I'm going to add a bunch of pockets to mine when i do this one, aaaaand possibly a zip. Oh and a hood? Since these are all pieced together, i bet kids sweaters would work. It would likely mean more piecing, but imagine the fun colours and patterns and decoration you could include. Oh SNAP! I just had a lightbulb moment. Maybe now's the right time to repurpose some of those fabulous baby sweaters I've been storing since my girls grew out of them! Thanks so much for sharing this one, and to your friend for getting us all motivated!
Your new sweater is absolutely unique! I love the color combination and the addition of the ribbing at the bottom pulled everything together. I crochet so I have always used a crochet hook to pull those snags to the back-even on ready to wear items. I enjoy watching how you put things together.
That looked like quite the problem solving to get to the final sweater. I really liked that you just kept fixing and fixing till you got to the end result. Loved the band at the end!
I just love that you show all of the different directions that your projects go! 😂 Just leaving it for a day or two is much improved over my leaving projects for several years when I hit a road block. You actually have given me the bravery/ confidence to pick up some of my old projects and finish them. 🎉 thank you! ❤
I almost lost it when you first tried it on. You did great pulling it out of the direction it was going-Uncle Bob’s XXL sweater. Turned out cute , especially the shorter version.

I love this! Im still a bit plus size and dont always find things to fit that I like! I mostly shop thrift anyway! So seeing an example of how to merge several sweaters is great! Ive seen some made with same size squares but too much looking like a quilt blanket!
As always, I love what you do with the sweaters even though I rarely need a sweater anymore! I also appreciated your sharing the re-do adjustments as that is part of the creative process but your idea of putting it down and walk away is a good idea. After serging and ripping through mistakes, I had the epiphany to change the fabric and it all came together better, finally! Patience and perseverance pay off!
