Fun fact: 'refrain' from 1:10 to 1:38 is very similar to 'Headhunter' 'refrain from Front 242 (one of EBM and industrial dance music pioneers). Nice touch :)Great song, better than studio track missing 'metal drumming' from beginning. Whole track very EBM-ish.
It's just some electronic drum pads hidden behind some oil drums, but I doubt he's playing anything as the intro to this song is a preset sound called "Machine Run" from a Roland D50 synthesizer. You can play this sound indefinitely by holding down a single note on the synth, but I guess that wouldn't look quite as exciting when you're on stage giving a concert ;)
@oxygene65 For a start the loop that sounds like hammers on iron, that's a loop from the Roland D50. And then he plays some notes during the whole piece that sound... well... a bit off, but suddenly, during the solo, he plays EXACTLY right. Well, ok, maybe that's real. Still, the percussion part is really this loop I mentioned. One key to press, not several instruments to trigger or play. I don't make this up, I have that loop
@musician1971a I know, I was being sarcastic ! Its always frustrated me watching JMJ live, I've been to several of his concerts, and in some bits its very obvious he was miming. Its a shame because the concerts are so fantastic and the music so good, the miming is like putting a little black mark on them. That patch off the D50 is awesome :) Another patch I like is Bank 4 Program 6 on the Elka Synthex. I dont make this up, I have that patch !
@musician1971a nice collection. I've tried the moog modular and minimoog ones and thought they were great, and the korg legacy which is pretty impressive. Although I am plagued with midi latency problems with the soft synths, so rely on my hardware for 99% of my sounds. I've collected over the years an AN1x, JP8000, MS2000, DX100, VP330 Vocoder, SY55, Synthex, JV1080, XV5080, TG500, A-Station and S6000 sampler. Not that I ever get the time to do any music these days. Bah !
so good, why there was no ubicity in Holland during this event? Is that censur? In the NOS journal there was sad that there was a kind of fest, but no Jarre mentiont in this announcement. Why?
@oxygene65 I mostly have softsynths, and quite a few of them. For synths I have Reason 5, Native Instruments Kontakt, Reaktor, Massive, Arturia Minimoog, Moog Modular, Prophet, Arp2600, and more. I should look on that forum I guess, maybe there are some patches :-)
@musician1971a heh heh, no worries mate. Yeah, I own a Synthex. I bought it about 10 years ago for £1600, hopefully worth a bit more than that today ! (not that I would sell it) Have you looked online ? what synths do you have ? I think if you go onto some of the Jean Michel Jarre chat forums you will find that there people have made available their Jarre patches to download. I managed to get a few patches for my Yamaha AN1x which had a couple of reasonably convincing laser harp sounds.
@oxygene65 Lol, sorry. And I know what you mean... Do you own a Synthex?? I'm trying to make that laserharp sound in other instruments, but it's just never gonna be as good as that Elka sound.
Why so many claps in the air, but so few people listen ambient today? :c Btw. I have an impression that in this song I hear similarites to Jesper Kyd's music:D
Almost all the sounds were from the Roland D50. Not standard presets but from various cards. The solo is Grittar 2, the mechanical rythym is 'Machine Run' and the strings 'Orchestra Philamonica'
Wow... he tricked (showmanship haha) so many with that beginning... it's actually a sound you got from the old Roland D50 (still a masterpiece machine btw) by pressing one key, but he uses sticks as if ha
Was thinkin the same thing, but i thought i was wrong since he pioneer of electronic music n specialize in doin concerts...he has amazing music though, im a new fan hehe
He's actually using the drum live. There is another version where the intro is different and instead of using the two drumsticks he beats two hits with one hand a bit too quick and you can tell he's really playing them.
I have the D50 from the Roland Cloud (And have played many in the past) and yes it IS a preset, however it's also backed up by a live drummer to add depth to it, I do the same thing in my studio. About 80% of the Revolution album used the D50 to great effect.
When I was a child, I first heard Jean Michel Jarre, more precisely in 1986. Since then, I have been a huge fan.

Awesome sound!!!!!
Byłem na tym koncercie, było cudownie. Potem byłem na tylko jednym koncercie JMJ ale jednak na 25 lecie Solidarności to było coś pięknego.
JMJ is one of the biggest composer and performer in music history of our world !!!
Ок. Will be know. Thanks.
That Keytar Sound Is Soo Cool! I Want One.
To było coś!
Wielki Mistrz
Live version is better than orginal :D
'Space of Freedom' Gdansk,Poland :)
I was there omg I love it
like me ...

It is a preset called "Machine run" from the Roland D-50 IIRC.
He is the best!
The greatest French mime artist since Marcel Marceaux. Fantastic music though, so we'll let him off :)
YEAH..... GREAT MUSIC
JMJ - Cool Man!!!
Très beau

we all know half of Revolutions are presets from the good old Roland D50. Its the art of assemble them.
Wonderful

Good, but his London concert was still the best. London Kid was brilliant. Only surpassed by Searching For Custaue

Good luck with the eye test....
can anyone tell me what instroments was used for this as i would like to play this
It's a keytar (I presume you mean the instrument JMJ is playing)
yes
Almost all the sounds were from the Roland D50. Not standard presets but from various cards. The solo is Grittar 2, the mechanical rythym is 'Machine Run' and the strings 'Orchestra Philamonica'
@bialamagia88 its too much to play live i think

We all know Revolutions was to 50% presets from the good old D50. The art is to assembly them.
zastanawia mnie tylko czemu instrument na którym on gra nie jest podłączony do żadnego sprzętu?
oh, thats terible version :(
