The problem with this chart is that it counts every word instead of every line. For example, when kanye says "I am a god" it would only count as one, even though the entire bar is about himself. All four words are about himself but this chart only counts the one. Also, some lines that rappers spit about themselves could be in a negative way. For example, when kanye says "im a problem that will never ever be solved" he is not being egotistical. In fact, hes being the complete opposite of egotistical.
You can talk negatively about yourself and be egotistical. The more that you talk about yourself, the more self centered you are because that's all you think about, yourself.

As I've gotten older I've learned to appreciate Kanyes over the top bombastic egoism quite a bit. His interviews and Live show rants remind me of some of my favorite 80s pro-wrestlers pure entertainment, plus its not like he says anything heinous I'll takes his antics over these new social media artists that do obnoxious shit hoping DJ Akademiks will bring them new followers.
Kanye the GOAT and his ego is validated by the most sonically varried discography in rap. PERIOD. Dude's created so many distinct waves in rap and hip hop culture it's crazy
I think context matters in this discussion, meaning that not every lyric with a self-referential term in it is a narcissistic or egotistical one. Lots of these rappers speak on their own experiences and feelings towards said experiences in their song. Just a thought. Really interesting study! Loved the video.
The problem with this is that you can still have the majority of a song be about yourself even if you aren’t saying the words that much, because the entire line is till about you.
Kanye has put out a lot of great music, so that begs the question, Can ego be justified? In my opinion, if you are great, if you are a genius, you don't have to tell anyone. No one called Ye a 'creative genius' before he did. So... I don't know if he put people onto the truth, or people are just impressionable to those they respect.
Jay-Z referred to Kanye as a genius in the beginning of the track Lucifer on The Black Album (fairly certain that was in reference to his production abilities). But, I do think that he has dropped some gems as far as having a social message is concerned (see "New Slaves", "Gorgeous", etc.). Is he egotistical? Probably, but something tells me most artists are to some degree. But, the bigger question is: how does any artists egotism either add to or take away from any person's quality of life if the music is good?
+Kris Lynch I wouldn't necessarily look towards someone's friend for an unbiased truth about them. I mean from the public's perspective. The general consensus was that he was extremely talented, but a genius? I don't think so. Relative the geniuses of the past, he doesn't hold up. I think we are just surrounded by ignorance in the music, media etc., so when someone great comes along they shine more. Just as how pretty girl's tend to be prettier if they spend time with their less-attractive counter-parts. (That was just an example)
+Kris Lynch He may of dropped some informative gems in his music, but, this is hip-hop, many artists have done that. I really don't know if there is too much UNDENIABLE evidence that he's a 'genius' as it were. He is talented? With out a doubt, but as aforementioned, I think what we accept as genius has lowered. Among Bach, Paganini or Mozart, Kanye really doesn't even come close.
+Aurelijus Langvinis Please understand that Mbdtf was a team effort. Look at all the credits on that album. The fact that Kanye makes use of a LOT of people on his albums is overlooked. 'Father Stretch my hands' off of Lop has 14 WRITING Credits. Mbdtf has the same mentality, writhing regards to how many people worked on it, it's not like Kanye by himself made that, if he did, that would be genius. I'm aware a lot of people use a lot of people, but they aren't called geniuses. And respectfully, don't use McCartney, he has never uttered 'genius' and 'Kanye' in the same sentence. And 'creative monster' is a great compliment. But, not genius.
+Aurelijus Langvinis Of course I understand, I'm saying that you need to understand people that are seen as geniuses in the past, Kanye doesn't really sit at the same place.
I wonder if a different methodology would produce a different ranking. What if you broke it up by sentences or clauses within the song and quantified the percentage of ideas/bars in which the rapper is the subject. This would take into account how many words the rapper uses to convey an idea.
This is a hella cool blog post by Ben, I'd love to see it be updated to include more and more artists (Thinking like 2 Chainz b/c that Burglar Bars intro is like that of Logic's Contact) if he found an easier way to do so instead of doing it all manually. Either way super awesome and intriguing
Yeah, I'd say he is. I mean take a look at this bit of one of his songs: "I am the beast I worship" He's basically saying he doesn't give a fuck about anyone else. He's the only person he respects.
Alex Alonzo opinions are like ducks their everybody hass one and the smell like goey flu poop from the elderly as the hospes nurse administers their supository pill of syonide in a state legal asisted death🤓
I'd really like to see this for MF DOOM. Feel like his percentages would be super low, and he'd have third person way higher than average. Love this type of stuff.
I feel like these graphs represent egocentrism rather that egotism. Kanye definitely has the most inflated ego (or at least he portrays himself that way) even if he doesnt talk about himself the most.
This is fascinating...though probably not the best metric for egotism as rap in general tends to be written in the first person perspective and so you’ve got to consider how many of the “I”s etc. are only self-referential in the most basic sense eg. from lines like “I drove you home” “Grabbed my jacket and headed for the door” etc. vs. “ I’m top of the game” I’ve got fat stacks” etc. and then you’d further have to consider wether the statements that are made about oneself are flattering, critical, neutral etc. Still, I do think how heavy the use of self-referential pronouns is definitely somewhat telling of writing ability...even tho we shouldn’t hold lyrics to the same standards as poetry or prose, I’d say you still want to vary your syntax...and it’s probably somewhat revealing of a self-focus, seeing yourself at the center of these narratives, relating it all back to you...though you’d want to consider the thematic focus of their work too eg. a lot of Kendrick’s work is self-reflective and focused on relating his personal life story to the stories of the wider community- that’s going to require a lot of self-referential pronouns.
Kanye West deserves to be egotistical. He created so many fantastic albums and is consistently pushing the boundaries of hip hop. He could be as egotistical as he wants in my book lol
I think most people tend to think Kanye is the most egotistical rapper not necessarily because of how much he directly references himself, but the severity of how he does it. Like the other 6 rappers above him could rap about “I, me, my, mine” all day, but all Kanye has to do is say “I Am a God” once and people freak out
When I saw Rocky's most prolific was Excuse Me, I tried to think of a line without a self-reference and couldn't do it. Still one of my favorite songs though
There's a flaw in the methodology. If you start a sentence referring to yourself, unless you add a word to change the topic the rest of the sentence is about you. They're only counting the actual reference tags (I, Me, Mine, etc.). If you said "I am Anthony Fantano and I have The Best Teeth in the Game," only two words would be about you with their methodology.
But is it bad if a musician’s discography is mostly personal antidotes? If the content is authentic, it’s easy for the listener to identify with the song. Especially singing along with the first person perspective lyrics.
Anthyony Thanks for making this video I have one friend who really like Mr. West but I have never been able to convey what u convey in this video. Thani you.
A more accurate depiction of how much they talk about themselves would be what percent of their bars they refer to themselves. If you only use I want spur bar and your bars contain a lot of words you can have every line in the song be about you but only 10% of the words actually reference yourself
The percentage doesn't really make scene, yes they do self reference themselves that percentage of the time but thats to set up the bar, if a bar starts with "I" all the following words are adding context to the self reference, you know what im saying?
J Victor one of the lines in same logic/ teeth by brand new is "goddamn you look so lovely but you sound, sound, sound so ugly." You have brand new's best looking album cover for a profile pic. But I disagree with your opinion. Therefore "goddamn you look so lovely (the album cover for a profile pic) but you sound sound sound so ugly (I don't like your opinion)"
I would like to know at what percentage does it mean that the rapper themselves have become the topic of the song because a low percentage could mean that those words are just helping to communicate a bigger idea and it doesn't mean that they're necessarily the point of the song while a high percentage is the opposite. Where is the line between subject and object I guess is what I'm asking. Also I think this is hard to measures because not every reference to self is the kind of narcissism we associate with Kanye. A self reference could just be a metaphor that explains a bigger idea. Music is hard to evaluate in this kind of way because it's more than just numbers. If he used some sort of algorithm it may definitely miss the purpose of the rappers use of i but if he sat down for himself and evaluated every song in their entire discography as well as counted the self reference, the picture may be more complete. Idk
