i am growing 4 butternut pumpkin plants for the first time using seeds from shop bought pumpkins- 2 in large pots and 2 in a raised bed with other stuff like tomatoes. The pumpkins grow so quick and are heaps of fun to train and pollinate by hand. Very rewarding. I cant wait to harvest my first one soon!
Living in Mexico, we had no idea this yummy squash existed, the only and most commonly sold summer squash is 'la calabacita verde' which looks like a tender zucchini, so we bought a couple of butternut squash and the way we prepared them was making them into a veggie cream soup, SO GOOD, usually we toast the seeds and eat them BUT not this time saved the seeds for planting this year's season, hoping they do well here, the summer season is the rainy season, from mid-May to September, had no idea how to care for them, but thanks to you dear lady, I now know a bit of how to grow and care for them. Greetings from Mexico to your family and you! :)
My wife just made Butternut Squash soup - delicious and packed with some serious nutrients! I just saved some seeds and will plant next spring in our new garden. Thank you for spending the time in explaining the steps - (yes - I had butternut squash sliced in half and added brown sugar - amazingly good!)
Thank you for the great video! Growing in NC. The trellis and pollination was very helpful. Love making butternut squash bisque. There are a lot of good recipes on the internet for that, but I like using ginger, garlic and nutmeg with creme.
You’re living in japan ! I’m in Shizuoka and about to start butternut squash here and didn’t have any knowledge about how to grow them, especially here !! Wow 😳 this is great thank you
Although the music made me uncertain of what to expect, I found your video very informative and helpful. As a first time gardener I am trying many different things and your video was very helpful. Thanks.
Thank you 😁. Congratulations on starting a garden! There are so many things to learn... I am not a newbie gardener, but I learn many things about my plants and how to take care of them every year!
Last year I roasted my first butternut and a sweet caramel like substance oozed out from it during the roasting process, this, combined with it's deep dark orange and luscious flesh, made me decide to save the seeds and grow my own, which is why I am watching this vid, for tips on growing! I love my sugar pumpkins and pumpkins in general but the butternut is next level in the food realm. I currently have two on the vine.
I peel and cut it into cubes, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle generously with a mixture of equal parts cumin, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika and chipotle chili powder. Roast until tender then serve on chopped, massaged kale with goat cheese, toasted pepita's and an apricot vinaigrette. So yummy. My first butternut plant is still tiny with no female flowers yet. We've been fighting the dreaded vine borer. 😤 Got 2 months until first frost, so fingers crossed!
Thanks for this video, it was very informative. I live in the Caribbean and I’ve just started growing some in my garden, it was good to know you have them in pots and not into the ground. Thanks again I’ve learnt a lot from your video.
Butternut squash is one of the greatest things on Earth! So versatile, so sweet, creamy and delicious. Put it up against any traditional pumpkin recipe and it blows the PUNKins away
@@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 I usually buy 100+ lbs in November when they are on sale for .49¢/lb and when they are optimal. Some of the best are strangely from Canada. Beautiful. great video! FULLY covers ALL aspects, from growing, to vining support, to pollinating, to moldy mildew solutions, to pruning, feeding, even to cooking! FANTASTIC. I am a fan :)
Great video ,learned a lot. Love the knowledge about using the trellis and the net in between. Goes to show you no matter how old you are you can learn something new everyday.
My favourite recipe is half a butternut squash, diced, a large tin of kidney beans, small tin of sweetcorn, a cup or so of water and _a couple of squares of dark chocolate._ Bring to the boil and then simmer for about 20 minutes, delicious. I believe it's based on an old Aztec recipe. Great in winter.
Thanx so much for the very good info on the butternut squash and all its goodness ! Also, for letting me know that your area is pretty close to where I am in Central FLorida. I will be looking for my next Slice of Heaven...
Thank you for the very inspiring video. I’m planning out my seedlings today. I hope they grow as beautiful as your plants have. Happy weekend from Canada!
Butternut squash and tomato goes together so well. I slice mine down the middle, take pips out, fill the hollow with mince tomato cubes, garlic, onions and pop it in the oven. Sprinkle cheese shavings over and enjoy!
First time growing these I have 6 plants hoping for a great harvest! I want lots of pies! FYI most “pumpkin in cans is not pumpkin it’s actually different squash
They make great soup too. Cook boil until soft in some vegetable stock alone or with a chopped onion or sweet potato etc. Season with s&p. Throw in chopped coriander if you want for a different tang, Liquidise, serve with a dash of cream. Nothing better than homemade soup. Great video thank you.
I prefer mine fairly thin/ runny rather than thick but it's personal preference. Easier to add more stock to thin it at liguidise stage than to thicken it up. When cooking I normally find add stock until squash just covered is normally enough. Hope this helps. Play about with it to suit your taste. 👍
Do you prune suckers? Wondering if the fruits grow more on the main stem or on the suckers? Very pleasant video to watch. I think the sky in Japan is bluer than here in Oregon.
Actually, I don't prune the suckers. I have had squash grow on both the main stem and on the suckers, but to be honest, I never paid much attention to which grew bigger 😉. I lived 17 years in Oregon, and I missed it very much while we were in Japan. The northwest is a beautiful place!

How many butternut squash plants do you have there? Is that 4 plants? I couldn’t quite tell. Thank you for the wonderful video! I can’t wow to plant mine now :)
What size container are you using? I've got two butternut squash plants in one container that's about 13 inches deep. I have spaghetti squash and zucchini growing the same way. The zucchini is starting to flower and the winter squash is starting to vine out
To get the most fruit out of butternut squash, it’s best to grow them on the ground, and let each leaf node touch the soil so they can send down roots at every leaf node, this allows the plant to secure itself against wind and storms, as well as bring in more nutrients and water.

Good recipe for butternut squash. Saute onions , garlic,,cubed and cut chicken,,shrimps,,pork ,cut butternut squash,,salt,,black,pepper..and a can of coconut milk.. Cook all together until meat and butternut squash are cooked.
Kon’nichiwa! I lived in Okinawa on Kadena, several years ago. Where are you living? I am using a wooden trellis for my butternut squash, will there be strong enough? Also I have noticed lots of ants inside of the blossoms, is this bad. And thank you for the tip on pollinating the female blossoms. I didn’t know that there was a male and female on the butternut squash. I learned something new today. Arigatogozimashita.
Kon'nichiwa! Don't mind the ants, they are actually pollinators themselves. At the time of this video, we were living just outside of Tokyo in Yokosuka. Now we are in Florida where the weather is much like it was in Japan. Thanks for the encouragement 😁. Happy growing!
I made it out of materials from the Japanese dollar store. If I had an option out here though, I would have made it out of cattle panels. This video was from last year and the trellis couldn't hold up to one of the stronger typhoons that we had towards the end of the season.
It depends on where you live. Just plant them after the last frost day for your area in the spring. They should grow all through the summer until the fall frost. Harvest all of them before the Frost though😁.
A Slice of Heaven Homestead Great thank you! I’ve just bought myself a couple of big pots with a wigwam style trellis. I’ll be able to fit two plants per pot. I hope my squash like the set up!
That wasn't all one plant. It was actually 4. I had two in each grow pot. Butternut squash can grow prolifically though. When I fertilize them I just use a balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10, or miracle grow.
Question: I removed about 75 percent of my leaves because powdery mildew was severe. But the fruit is still looking great. Nice and tan and stems starting to turn. Do you think the removal of so many leaves will hurt the fruit and should I also harvest early. I still have bad powdery mildew on most of the remaining leaves. Thank You!
I wouldn't worry about the remaining fruit. They should be fine. I hate powdery mildew! It is always a problem with my squash too 😉. I would leave the squash that you have on the vine until it is time to harvest. Good luck and happy growing 😁

@@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 that is so interesting thank you. Mine are flowering now but its been raining on and off for a few days so Im not too sure any bees are visiting. I might need to pull your paintbrush trick.... If I can find some dry pollen.

Doesn’t rain get on the leaves. I grew it in a large container but nothing started growing. I saw a couple bees and male and female blossoms. Nothing grew though.

I think it is all about the water and nutrients. I have had seasons where I made sure to feed and water them regularly and the fruit stayed fairly big all the way until the fall weather killed of the vines.
@@asliceofheavenhomestead3559 Thank you for a quick reply. How often do you recommend fertilizing and is a specific npk fertilizer that have given you good results?.., I forgot to comment earlier, great job on the video..it was very informative.
Thank you for that encouragement 😊. I would just use a balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10. I also have great results with miracle grow. It is a fairly balanced blend. If you are growing your squash in pots, you will have to fertilize them more often than if they are in the ground. If you are in a really rainy area, I would suggest once every couple weeks if they are in the ground, throughout the growing season. If you are in a dryer area, then see how they do with once a month.

did you grow that whole vine inside a pot? or did you plant in the ground
I was very limited on space and wasn't allowed to plant anything in the ground. I grew the butternut squash of of a 3 gallon grow bag. Actually, in this set up, I had grown 4 squash plants( 2 in each grow bag).
How do you avoid ladybuglike bugs, they appear to be yellow ones. Also trine leaves have light white color a bit on it.
How do you keep them healthy.

I usually just give them a balanced 10-10-10. Something with equal parts of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphate. Miracle grow works just fine 😉.
How often do you water your squash? Mine have just sprouted and I'm watering them deeply once a week.
I watered them twice a day. Because mine were in grow pots, the soil dried out very fast. If they are planted in the ground then you won't need to water them as often as I did. I would put down mulch to trap the moisture in the soil. Good luck with your garden 😁!
Welcome Tanzania to produce squash
I just take off the male flower, pull back the petals, and rub it on the inside of the female flower. No need for paint brush or Q-tips.
I load up the paintbrush and save the pollen until the time when a female flower opens, but there are no male flowers 😉. Otherwise, I use that method too 😁.
How do you get your butternut squash fruit to grow larger? Does it depends on how much the female plant us pollinated?
I think it is all about the water and nutrients. I have noticed that as the vine grows longer, the plant has to dedicate more of the nutrients into up keep on the vine and it makes the fruit grow smaller.
U look so beautiful and your vegetables
Trivia: Typhoons aren’t like hurricanes. They are hurricanes.
True 😉.
When the storm is at sea, it is a Typhoon. When it makes landfall,it is called a Hurricane. I survived Halsey's Typhoons ,during WW2, on a Destroyer, DD540. I am now 97 and doing ok.
Thank you for this x
