According to what I read from the event, the paper boats were actually supposed to be floating lanterns, anyways! So either it was a reference to that, or, yeah, the boats could just be the next best thing.

They were talking about how they met and it's easy to see how time has passed, they were getting older and the items used were also being changed to show the time skip.
