    I was taught how to dismount m/c tires in 1965 and have been doing them ever since. The important thing to know is -there is a ring of wire around the bead, it is steel, you cannot stretch it. Think about that for a minute. It is a steel ring that is smaller than the outside diameter of the wheel. Try to deform it into an oval and it's still too small. So what gives? The tire can be removed because 180 degrees from where you are prying, the bead or beads drop into the depression in the center of the wheel. Then the smaller steel ring of wires in the bead are no longer concentric with the wheel. It is eccentric to the point that it can be slipped over the rim. Weather it's zip ties, a tire iron, c-clamps, your boots or your knees - it's all the same, get the bead into the depression in the center of the rim.

    I tell you what, for a spoke (old style rime) this would be a way to go if you had no money to take it to a shop. They make a zip tie gun to pull them tight. A lot of comments on where I seen this posted were giving you a hard way to go. For me I would totally do this, smart thinking nice job..!

    Quick tip: when using tire irons to dismount the tire off of the wheel; cardboard will do absolutely nothing to protect your wheel. The best thing to do is to wrap the contact point of the tire iron with some kind of tape, masking tape, whatever. Make sure you wrap it around good as many times as you feel will be enough and there you go. I work for a wheel company and that’s how we do it so that all those expensive wheels do not get messed up.

  • @atsernov
    @atsernov 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I noticed a fair bit of balancing weight on that wheel. If you're pulling the tire off for a patch, don't forget to mark the sidewall with some chalk or paint/whiteout at the valve stem. When you've put the tire back on, align the mark with the valve stem before you cut the ties and inflate the tire to insure your wheel stays balanced.

    LOL! He just used a pry bar and a bit of cardboard on the wheel! This is hilarious. A pack of THREE 15-inch long tire irons is only $20, and they are way faster than dicking around with a pile of zip ties. There is a big difference between being clever and wasting time and money to do something the wrong way.

      I think you missed the point, the idea was to do it CHEAP, and not fast. It's definately cheaper to use some zip ties, an old tire iron prybar, some scrap 2x4s, an old piece of cardboard, and a $30 bead breaker, than to spend $200 that you don't have to get your old tires demounted, remounted, and balanced. You'd be surprised what you can do with nothing but a few scraps and a little imagination.

    Dude, you need to mark the valve stem and tire for balancing location. When you reinstall, rotate tire so marks align, at least then it will be close to being balanced again.
    A Bead breaker is a great investment but, get two mini spoon bars as well.
    Never seen this zip tie method. Not a bad idea but, is a bit of a waste going all the way around. All you need is a little help to drop bead into the center of the wheel.
    Use two ties like you did at first, then stop and use the spoon bars.
    If you have fear of marking your wheel, slip rubber hose over the spoon bar about two inches long and use it to rest on the rim. If you slip the bars in close to each other and use a few small bites, it will be off in no time at all. You can also use a few flat screwdrivers if you don't have spoon bars.
    I Watched the install vid as well. You don't need zip ties at all. First bead will just push on with your hands, may even use your knee a bit. Second bead will go on most of the way with your knee and hands, then a few slips of the spoon bar.( easy )
    Noted; soap water mix is smart and important. However, you paid attention to what one bead was doing and not the other. Always check that the two sides are coming up properly. Then air the beads to pop into place and adjust air after they pop.
    Not all tires pop/snap loud when they seat. If you want to be sure they did in fact seat ? Let all the air out and check beads. If all is good, refill the tire to proper pressure .
    Great vid
    Full thumbs up for do it yourself work, always room to learn more about things.
    I'm a 14 year(s) Licensed Tire Technician
    Also, Plugging a motorcycle tire to get home is o.k. BUT, get it fixed right and patch it from the inside.

    Nice video ignore the comments from folks that can't change their own tires LOL.
    Some tips the HF spoons are crap. Cut up milk jug works better than a pc of cardboard.
    The nomar paste works well for mounting doesn't leave as much moisture in there. Diluted and sprayed on works for bead breaking. Google around for mods to the $29 HF when it's on sale tire changer, that and a mojo or nomar bar and your good to go. The yellowthing is handy for mounting the 2nd bead. Even if you only go thru 2 or 3 sets a tires a year it quickly pays for itself and tire changes happen on your schedule. Avoid the dealer butchers like the plague :) Why pay extra for a dealer tire, more money for the swap, trips back and forth? Use the money for gas and go ride.

    While you were at harbor freight you should have purchased the portable changer with motorcycle attachment for $100. Add a Nomar Mount Bar and balancer rod and cones, some curved lever irons, and a fellow sells a delrin kit for ~$30 for the HF changer. Use jack stands or other for balancing. In business for ~$300. Been using one for ~15 years. I change 6-8 tires a year and save $50-$100 per tire vs a dealer, and it's way easier and quicker than what you just watched. That's 90 tires min x $50 = $4500, $4200 in my pocket over 15 yrs for a $300 investment.

    I have to say that is a wild way of doing it. If you have to use the tire tool to pull the bead across at all then why not just get rid of the zip-ties and just use the tire tool? It only ever seems like a big job to those who haven't really mounted many tires, but bikes are honestly easy. Try golf cart tires. Either way you got it done and I bet the common biker today couldn't. Good job and you should find a way to balance it.

    Tires only last me about a 1000 miles so I go through a lot. I Have a cheap harbor freight car tire head breaker, motion pro tire spoons/rim shields, some 2x4s and wheels wieghts. I don't even use a balancing stand. I just hold the wheel by the axle to static balance it. Haven't had a problem.

  • @alanpaterson7359
    @alanpaterson7359 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    put the wheel on a car wheel with a tyre so it doesn't damage the disc or sprocket, if you used a tyre lever (which ended up happening anyway) and a piece of hard plastic (not cardboard) and a rubber mallet; you'll have the tyre off before the first zip tie went around. Bang it on with a mallet and soap and NO levers. Admittedly there is technique involved, but worth learning. Go ask a old racer who had to rotate the rear between racers to show you.

    your drive sprocket is on a hub..thats only being held in to the wheel by rubber cushions..if you just pull the sprocket away from wheel it comes right off, after you remove sprocket hub ..inspect cushions for wear..if worn replace them with new,,if not worn, lube them with thin grease to prevent dry rot,..and push back on the hub after tire change

    Genius approach, but it looks extremely unhealthy for the tire to me. I'd panic on the thought that I might have squeezed one of those metal bands within the rubber too much and I would fear that it might just rip apart at 240km/h. Sure, I'm too easily spooked when it comes to tires - but it's just the one thing I want in absolute pristine condition.
    But bottom line: thanks for the video! That's been awesome and I'll keep it in mind (even tho I won't ever do this as long as I know *someone* with the proper machine for the task). I presume you never had any issues riding them after this squeeze? What's the top speed you took them to?

    I just called Mototire in Phoenix...The total for two new commander II tires for my bike...They want $398.50 for the tires and changing them...The price of the tires on Amazon for my bike is $226.00 free shipping. So, they want $176.50 for 2 tires and install....Outrageous....If their price for the tires are that much, perhaps they should shop at Amazon...I asked them how much do they charge to change the tires alone...They said that was $100.00. If I brought in the tires, it would be $20.00 per tire...Which is reasonable...Except that they won't put tires on purchased somewhere else. Great video and thanks for the instruction.

    No, "rim" is correct. A "wheel" is the whole assembly, but, some marketing geniuses decided they needed to change it. Like bad is awesome instead of bad????? Ever heard of "wagon wheel"? Thats the spokes and everything, WAY before cars came around. Always been called rims and always should. Dont fall victim to the herders, use your brains!! Now, please correct the video! :)

    • @bunnyhug4365
      @bunnyhug4365 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, the metal part is a wheel, the lip around the wheel is the rim, and the rubber compound is a tyre.
      Rim: the upper or OUTER EDGE of an object, typically something CIRCULAR or approximately CIRCULAR
      Synonyms for rim: brim, edge, lip, border
      That concludes your English lesson for the day. My name is Mr. Travis, if you have any questions or comments please write them on a piece of paper and put them in that ceramic seat in the bathroom known as the toilet and press the lever. Thank you.

    Great for desperate times. but if you plan on changing tires at home in the future, harbor freight has a proper tire changer for under $100. Not only is it easier, but you can charge your riding buddies when they are in need and avoid expensive shop rates. In the end it pays for itself. Wheel balancers are cheap too.
