- BAKEWELL at CHRISTMAS. This Peak District village is famous for it's Bakewell pudding but there's more to this Derbyshire town close to Sheffield has than that. We visit Bakewell for a look at this famous tourist destination to see what it's like for Christmas shopping or a day out!
The River Wye flows through this town under the famous Love Lock Bridge and it's here we start our Bakewell walk, heading into the town centre for a look around the shops and arcades here, taking in the hotels and pubs and restaurants as we go.
Bakewell is a town situated between Sheffield and Manchester and close to other great UK towns and villages such as Buxton, Castleton, Eyam, Hope, Grindleford and Baslow and not far from Chesterfield.
The top 10 ways to spend a day in Bakewell

2) The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.
3) Bakewell Old House Museum.
4) Haddon Hall.
5) Monsal Trail.
6) Monsal Head and Monsal Dale.
7) Hassop Station Cafe and Monsal Trail Cycle Hire.
8) Chatsworth.
9) Try some Bakewell pudding!
10) Stay over at the Rutland Arms Hotel
Also visit the Bakewell Market! Generally held on the last Saturday of every month, the District Council's popular Bakewell Farmers' Market attracts many 1,000s of visitors. Bakewell is famous for its weekly markets that started all the way back in the 13th century, in those days there were very few shops and so if a person wished to buy or sell anything they had to go to the market to trade. Soon it became a flourishing market town where people from all over flocked to visit.
Walks around Bakewell can take you along the River Derwent to the luxurious grounds of Chatsworth House or you can follow the Wye's journey downstream to grand Haddon Hall.
The town of Bakewell has been named one of England's best small towns to live in. The settlement, famous for its Pudding, has been singled out in a list by UK property finder company Garrington, for its location within the Peak District National Park, but that it is “by no means a backwater”.
During the late 17th Century the Duke of Rutland decided to develop Bakewell as a Spa town to rival nearly Buxton and built a Bath House above a chalybeate spring in the town centre.
Bakewell really is a little gem of a village in the heart of the glorious Peak District. The wonderful old buildings, the character cottages, the meandering river with banks of green willow - Bakewell is simply a truly beautiful place. Whether you are here for a day trip, or are staying in a Peak District cottage nearby, sample the delights that Bakewell has to offer. There are pubs, restaurants and eateries galore. It’s the home of the infamous Bakewell pudding, the dessert that went wrong but has now gone so right!
Bakewell is a chocolate box town with wildfowl roaming free. The famous Bakewell show is a summer delight and a definite date to pencil in on your calendar. The modern day town is bustling with visitors meeting its charm for the first time, travelling afar from all corners of the globe. It’s a trinket box of shopaholic delights with the wonderful River Wye undulating gently under a glorious gothic arched bridge and the ancient church looking on - it’s a place visited through past centuries, a small town from the Anglo Saxon era. It’s a meeting place for young and old alike, on foot, by pushchair or by car.
And with battling bakeries claiming rights to a pudding - how many places in the Peak District can boast that? Once Bakewell has got into your bloodstream, you’ll be back - time and time again!

they could make bakewell even more beautiful if they decorated the village at christmas with lights on the trees and shops making an effort
It was a nice village and the river and the ducks and sunny day but the town needs to have some decorations and lights up for Christmas and the cars and padlock but the shops everywhere round and quiet too did you have a hot drink
Take some bread in the summer for the ducks but not white 😂
