He was a very sad mess who destroyed himself and a great acting career. There was nothing funny or classy about him. I feel in love with him when he starred in the Three Musketeers and then his persona went downhill. He was a miserable, sloppy drunk and honestly neither his fans or fellow actors felt sorry for him.
Oliver Reed is in control of this situation and none of the childish malevolence of the show even touches him. He was an outrageous provocateur himself and played on his drinking all the time for a bit of notoriety and he's totally aware of how cheap these show formats are. He confounds the hapless Christian and patronising Pukerick with his usual act of talking nonsense with impeccable diction which really turns the tables on them, outclasses them and leaves them flailing in their own cheapness. Even the nobhead audience are dumbfounded. But, yes, the dick with the dinosaur should be crucified
Dominic Keefe man I watched this and wanted to type just what you said. So funny how stupid they all look for thinking they could get cheap laughs at his expense and how much more human he is
The pitfalls of trying to stereotype Oliver, he wipes the floor with them in his usual mischevious and elegant tones, "would i know anything madam?" Classic! god bless you as always Oliver.
met Olly in 1990( i know) we did an interview with him he pretended to be drunk until we had finished the interview ..then he snapped out of it and bought us all lunch ..what a nice guy
I used to enjoy the word , but they look very childish now, Oliver was the only man in the room , with a load of silly girls who are now probably fat and old. He was his own man and not a clone . He will always be remembered and admired.
Reed had been set up by the production team at The Word & plied with copious amounts of booze in the Green Room. Reed would play up to his image for the sheer hell of it. Terry Cristian and Kate Putrick get down on your knees in the presence of true greatness!
+711honved 100% agree with you, Reed was a giant and still an inspiration to true character actors to this day, I suspect the idiot with the plastic dinosaur behind the great man is still doing nothing of value, I sincerely hope someone punched him in the face after the show. R.I.P. Oliver Reed, a legend in the truest sense of the word.
I think that's disgusting to supply copious amounts of alcohol to a man who obviously has a problem. That's like filling backstage with drugs for a guest who abuses coke.
He wasn't drunk on this show, read his book, a lot of these 'drunk appearances' he was as sober as a judge. He done it because it's what the producers wanted and he was an excellant actor. He also knew about the 'hidden camera' on this show.
Oliver Reed was a legend, and he knew how to "play" an audience, as demonstrated here, he knew what was going on , and treated it as such..... He appeared in more than 100 films during his career, and lived life to the full, which is a lot more than todays supposed "hell-raisers"......... RIP Olly........
"Bill winced at the idea but Hedge convinced him. Yes, the show was atrocious but its ratings were huge. [Producer Paul] Ross told him how the show had a great prank that night: producers had brought Britain's favorite drunk, Oliver Reed, to a pub before the show and now they were planning to train a secret camera on him in the dressing room. [...] 'Bill didn't like the idea that Oliver Reed was as drunk as he was,' Hedge said. 'He didn't like that they were exploiting him.'"
"Would I know anything, Madam?". Ollie was too intelligent for some interviewers and this is proof of it. He could easily have lost his temper and created a scene, but he didn't. Ollie was a true professional when he knew he had to be. Utter legend Ollie.
Oliver was a true British gentleman, very kind, caring sort and one of our best actors we have ever had in history. They treated him like a circus freak in the 70's & 80's for his over liking to the odd old drink or two. Regardless of that, what you may think of him as a ass sometimes at that time he was a very sensitive person in reality and a "Real Human Being" just like ourselves with all the weaknesses it brings... How many actors now can you count on your hand have that sort of quality...
This is one of the most magnificient of moustaches I've ever seen! I don't know if it was Oliver Reed's own facial hair or not - nevertheless, it is fabulous. Almost steels the show. :D
You can say what you like about The Word but they had two icons in their field sat on the same sofa on the same show. It was a good laugh at that late night weekend time slot. There doesnt appear to be anything on tv now for the young generation like there was in the 90's. It's all comedy quiz shows featuring the same six 'comedians' on rotation.
Yea mate you know it, the late 80's early 90s music and Tv was at its peak fir youth. Now it's game shows, cooking and bad styleless music the only icons in music are this professor green n tinchy strider or ellie galding???!? the 80s 90s you had a variety of music even for commercial stuff, now wonder the youth in England stab each other

I can't believe two of the absolute greats in Bill Hicks and Oliver Reed were together, and yet the awful show itself managed to make it unwatchable. What a fucking shame
Even while sloshed, Ollie effortlessly shows up the presenters for the nobodies that they are - not in a cruel or calculating way, but simply by being the funny, erudite, irrepressible character that he is. As many others have said here, the presenters try to make him look foolish but he turns the tables without even trying.
Loved ollie Reed...the corporal bit he said on eurotrash but also tried getting the presenter in a headlock because he was French which Ollie didn't like👍😆😆.... imagine him being your corporal in the army🤯🤗🤗
oli knew exactly what he was doing when he went on these shows..pissed or otherwise, i also doubt he gave a shit whether people felt sorry for him or not. I believe he was as strong minded as he was physically..he just loved a drink.. all that bollocks aside , he was a fascinating character and an amazing actor and the world is a poorer place with out him.
On that point I 100% agree with you. Such a shame about this clip. Oliver Reed was a great/talented man and it is almost insulting to see him having to interact with this bunch of adolescent minded people.

Oliver drunk - and he still has the most class.

Well it doesn't take much to have more class than those two pieces of trash.
Aye, well The Word was hosted by a bunch of classless pricks

I wish Ollie would've turned around and clock that smart ass with the alligator toy in the background.
VolumedMusicMan I was thinking the same as I watched it..wishing he would just turn round and lump the twat
Clungeboy935 I thought it was a dinosaur like he was saying Oliver was old.
Well despite the great man sadly long dead- he is legend As for that prick who annoyed Reed he is probably a cheap suit letting agent in Croydon
My thoughts exactly!
i think it's a spinosaurus

Ollie the legend, still fondly remembered for his acting and his antics. Everybody else on this TV show , long forgotten.

Is "fat and old" a bad thing to be? Oliver seems to match those properties.
Bill Hicks sat beside him watching in awe as this behemoth of a character eclipses all around him.
