    I became a Bruce Lee fan in 1973 when I was 9 years old and bought every magazine and book I could. I read every word of all the words written. :) I don't relate well with the modern Bruce Lee fan who mostly get their knowledge through beardy or Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. I am a projectionist and film collector/programmer at a single screen cinema palace. I own a mint original IB Technicolor print of Enter The Dragon which pulls in big numbers of people when we show it. Many times in the last 12 years we have shown it and it always surprises me how busy it is. It's draw is growing not shrinking. Mind you we have built a big following for classic films projected via 35mm film. Young people want to see actual film projection. It's become the cool in thing. So is digital restorations projected digitally on the big screen but if it's a film print, we get a bigger purist crowd. Our projection quality is also top notch presentation wise.
    Hoping to do a proper Bruce Lee film festival before this 50th anniversary year is done. some venues around the world are doing so.
    Cheers and thanks for the videos Kung Fu Genius.
    PS A question for future guests experts on Bruce Lee. The 1974 release prints in North America of Return Of The Dragon has Different Bruce battle cries than Way Of The Dragon. Was this alternate audio that Bruce recorded or was it done after his death for the Return Worldwide release.

    Another great episode! As a longtime BL nut and martial artist, I have very little interest or patience for the back and forth about BL, martial arts and JKD in particular. So I limit myself to discussions by people I respect and admire as those who really know what they’re talking about. Or maybe it’s just that they agree with me, lol. KFG/Alex is one channel that never lets me down when I tune in. 👊

    Arrow Film are releasing all the Bruce Lee films on 4K and blu ray on the 17th July.
    The big draw is that it includes a HD scan of a theatrical print of The Big Boss, which includes most of the missing scenes and also scenes that hadn't been spoken about previously. It's been playing in UK cinemas and was amazing to see.
    The other thing that Arrow found, were all 11 reels of footage that Bruce shot for Game of Death. They're including them in their entirety on a disc. All this footage includes the 'log fight footage' and also the footage shot in the New Territories.

    Don't forget about the Beardy video where he says that Bruce Lee and Jim Kelly went around the United States to Karate dojos and beating the top students and sensei's up. Imagine Bruce Lee taking weeks or months out of his life to do such a thing! I can picture it now. Bruce pulls up to Jim Kelly's house in a 67' Plymouth GTX convertible (like Tommy Boy) and Kelly walks up with a duffle bag and gets in. Bruce looks at him and asks if he's ready and jim gives him the "brothers in arms/hippie handshake." Then Bruce pulls out a map of the US and they plot their course across the country traveling from dojo to dojo. 😂

    Gong Sau Wong ?? Now there's a guy I would 💙 to cover & know more about. This is the guy who REALLY taught Bruce Wing Chun as an instructor at Yip Man's school of W.C..Bruce had better access to Yip because he himself was a cerebrity as a child actor from an acting family!! The master of The Talking Hands should be a subject Wing Chun practitioners could invest there time in. To get a better understanding of the history of Wing Chun

    Ah and since you mentioned "No Retreat No Surrender": In Germany and many other european countries the title is "Karate Tiger". Its very liked here, but i know not so much in the USA. Many people here rank Karate Tiger higher as Karate Kid. Of course Kid is a Hollywood movie with great story, music, but also a director like John Avildson and a writer as Robert Mark Kamen, while Tiger aka NRNS was directed by Corey Yuen.
    The leading actor Kurt McKinney "Jason" was here in Germany a couple weeks ago (in June), so was Viking Samurai, but also Bolo Yeung's son, Cynthia Rothrock, Billy Blanks and others for "The Last Kumite."
    BTW Alex do you like Cynthia R. and her movies? I know she and Sammo Hung always had a great relationship, and Sammo has a very good opinion on her and her skills.
    So or so its nice to see many of them togehter in "The Last Kumite". The producer is a German and many scenes are filmed in Germany. They were all together in Hamburg in the end of June.

    • @TheKungFuGenius
      @TheKungFuGenius  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No Retreat, No Surrender is a classic! I recently started following Kurt on Instagram, which is why I am up-to-date on pretty much everything you wrote in your post. I also follow Viking samurai and I’ve been on his channel a couple times too so I am aware of what he’s up to. Cynthia has been to my school and I’ve spent some time with her hanging out and she’s amazing. I’ve always laughed at NRNS’s silly German title, but then again, Germans put a silly title on any film that comes from out of the country. NRNS probably didn’t do as well here, because it was an obvious rip off of the karate kid, and the dialogue was quite cheesy even for its time. These films can sometimes get washed a little bit in foreign languages, and not be quite as terrible as they are in the original language. The fighting in that film is top-notch, and the basic story is unique, but it certainly has its flaws.

    • @chrisbach1533
      @chrisbach1533 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool! :) Yes Kurt did a lot of interviews in recent times. He was on Scott Atkins Podcast about 2 yrs ago, and in March this year he did an interview with a German, his YT channel is "Ungeschnitten" ("Uncut").
      About Cynthia: Thats nice! Ive heard she is a very nice and humble person. I am 100000% sure you as a Hong Kong movie fan remember this great and unique documentary "The Best Of The Martial Arts Films" from 1990, i still have it on VHS and it brings back great memories. Jackie, Sammo, Yuen Biao, Cynthia, they were all in it, even Keith Cooke and Richard Norton, the Narrator was John Saxon. I dont remember if it was Sammo or Jackie, but one of them said: "Cynthia is the first western woman who made it in Hong Kong Martial Arts movies, she has such a great talent" (only paraphrasing).
      NRSR: Sure the english dubb is horrible, i saw it in English and it was very poor. In the German version its very good since the they changed many lines and the dubbing voices are just great. McKinney and Van Damme had some "standard" voices, but this maffia dude who introduced Van Damme's "Ivan" character in the end (played by Joe Verroca) was dubbed by Manfred Lehmann, who is the standard german voice for Bruce Willis and Dolph Lundgren.
      I saw after the interviews of Kurt that many ppl in the comment sections from Germany, but also France, Italy, Serbia and some Balkan States said the movie is known as "Karate Tiger", NRNS is only in USA, UK and i think Canada and Australia. I guess from a marketing point it made sense, because a movie title "No Retreat No Surrender" (German: "Kein Rückzug, kein Aufgeben") wouldnt be recoginzed by people as a martial arts / Karate movie. It only run in TV here never in cinema.
      As great The Karate Kid was and Cobra Kai is, but especially in the KK movies the fight scenes were very bad. I mean nothing against Ralph Macchio or Billy Zabka, but they both didnt have any martial arts experience when they did the movie, Zabka definately had talent since he learned so fast. But Macchio looked terrible in his fight scenes, anyone saw he wasnt skilled in martial arts, so Daniel LaRusso looked to many Europeans not credible as being so good. Thats why to this day the Cobra Kai fans are so sure Johnny and Daniel are equal, even if Daniel was the only who now defeated Kreese and Silver and not Johnny. Johnny was manhandled by Silver since he simply has a below average defense. But Zabka is definatly much more skilled as Macchio.
      In NRNS you saw they all had real life MA skills and so Jason was much more credible as Daniel.

It was surreal because in that theatre most people were asian. I felt like i was warped back to the seventies and i thought a moment, WHERE'S BRUCE!? Anyway that was in Mandarin (i can't tell it's all chinese to me);-) BTW it didn't have (if it ever did) the SAW scene. Some people claim in the early screenings they saw (pun intended) that. That was a great Podcast again! Steve Kerridge is definately one of the greatest experts on Bruce Lee, and i hope he s gonna come back again in the future. What is new to me is that he is such a fan of combat sport (Boxing, MMA etc.) :), thats my thing, especially Boxing.
    Question for you (Alex): I was stunned hearing you once had a diner with Sergey"Krusher" Kovalev :D! He was one of my favorite Boxer's in the past decade, and i still think he didnt lose the first fight against Andre Ward. Did you also speak with im a bit about Wing Tsun, Bruce Lee and martial arts subjects? I am very sure he is a huge fan of his fellow russian countryman Fedor Emelianenko, who many still see as the greatest MMA Heavyweight to this day, and some say Fedor would even beat Jon Jones.
    Fedor in his prime was beast.
    And even if i don know if Steve reads these comments too, but a question for both of you:
    Do you like this upcoming Tyson Fury vs Francis Ngannou fight? I am not honestly! I cant stand this gaslighting from Fury and Frank Warren anymore. Fury doesnt want any smoke of Olexandr Usyk right now, and its somehow sad because there was no undisputed heavyweight Champion since Lennox Lewis who retired in February 2004.

      @@johncarroll772 Hi there, can i ask you a question? I guess you already read the book by Mr. Ohl right? If you i would like to know if he agrees with Leo Fong and his female student Teri Tom?
      Mrs Tom is the author of "The Straight Lead: The Core of Bruce Lee's Jun Fan Gung Fu", and i am one of the people who questions her and L. Fong's views a bit. They are both deep into Boxing, and as much i am a fan of Boxing too, i never really agreed to the people who said Jun Fan Gung Fu has his roots in Western Boxing, or has much Western Boxing in it.
      When i became a Bruce Lee fan in the early 90's, it was generally portrayed in books and documentaries about him his real root and base was Wing Chun during the Jun Fan Gung Fu days, and it was clear Yip Man was his first real teacher. Later many people almost act like his real teacher(s) were people like Jack Dempsey, and that he himself considered Boxing much better as Wing Chun, thats the way like documentaries like "I Am Bruce Lee" portray it.
      Fact is neither Dan Inosanto nor Taky Kimura ever saw it that way, i mean the way like Fong and Tom portrayed it in their book.
      Many things went out of control in the past 15 years or so, and the major reason is his Estate, who sells his name for any BS, but are completely quiet when guys like Vic(tor) Moore come out of the blue making claims he defeated Lee in a secret Sparring, or others like Beerdy who speards lie after lie after lie about Bruce, or some authors writing books about him with very questionable claims, etc..
      Best regards.
