  • Leader of the Alliance Party Naomi Long has expressed her deep frustration as Stormont's paralysis continues. She said, "it's a shameful day for the DUP."
She also expressed her anger for not being able to challenge Jeffrey Donaldson, DUP leader, in person. He is still yet to take his seat .

Yes, it’s clear the have what it takes. As the other comment says, the system currently would not allow it. In fairness, although they do aim for reform in that regard, Alliance are happy enough to work within the current system’s perimeters but are understandably very angry that they’re not even allowed to do that because of DUP theatrics. If there was another vote today, DUP would lose even more seats. Their referencing the protocol is nonsense, it’s just a self serving move to spite SF. If they really cared about the protocol (which by all measures is good for the NI economy) they would take their seats and engage in dialogue about it with the other parties.
I’ve lived in London and engaged in the social aspects of political circles. DUP are fooling themselves with the idea that they’re viewed as anything other than provincial Irish troublemakers by the establishment.

I will add that there agreement that the sinners brought it down for 3 years is not really valid because they done it on the basis that dup would not make Arlene that a step back while the rhi was investigated. In short it was a reaction to something they saw as wrong and needed dealing with.

Very different scenario today. For many years after Partition the Irish Republic hoped to destroy Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is the smaller of the two "Irelands". Those days are long gone but there is still a fear amongst the Unionist ( Irish Protestant) community that they will suffer political and financial harm if the two countries unite. Currently the UK gives a lot of financial assistant to Northern Ireland and N.I. may struggle if this stops. HopefulIy the healthy economies of both countries will stop this being a problem. In the last couple of years there has an amazing amount of trade between the two countries. I believe that the two Irelands will unite as a MERGER between equals not as a larger country overwhelming a smaller one and that all Irish cultural indentities will thrive. Eirinn go Bragh!

Protocol exists, in essence, to defend the GFA (and also happens to be doubly useful as it softens the blow of a Brexit a majority in the North oppose). DUP determination to destroy against, against the expressed will of the electorate, has in my view made amendment/update of the agreement, in one form or another, necessary. Either way its being broken, it's just a matter of whether that breech favors democracy (the anti-brexit majority) or the system being held ransom by an overly belligerent political minority (the DUP). I’m pretty sure 90% of Ireland WANTS to be in the EU. Because why wouldn’t they? In the 1970s, Ireland was an absolute hellhole. Nearly 1000 years of being ransacked and genocided by the brits, they had WW1, a war of independence against UK, a civil war etc they were in absolute poverty and disarray. But thanks to the EU, Ireland is now wealthier than the UK.. lol.
