    I had to do some research on Willow Street Fire Company to discover it was 100% volunteer staffed. Kudos to the good people who devote their time to such dangerous environments. In Australia we have volunteer bush fire brigades, but to find a 100% volunteer FD is usually limited to quite small towns.

      The state I live in, in America, is 80% volunteer firefighters. Yet we have a population of just over 1.3 million. But majority of our state, and I mean 70% of it isn’t populated, we have the most forested area in the continental US

    • @rabidseabee7229
      @rabidseabee7229 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's quite a common thing in most US States to have fully volunteer fire companies. Where I grew up in northern California, we had three volunteer companies across the three close towns and a State run station near the highway as backup.

      @coover65 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rabidseabee7229 Do they also provide EMS coverage as well? I've noticed quite a few volunteer EMTs working with a local FD. In Australia the ambulance services are state run, and apart from volunteer first responders, only registered career paramedics can legally work on ambulances.

Also how does the EMT driver know before hand that that unit is just assisting? Doesn't happen that fires are scaled up? The only reason you can say it would not have made a difference in this particular call, but that is not something you know in advance as an EMT driver with a fire truck behind you.

I'm a big fan of positive deflection and using indicators to signal ones intentions to emergency vehicles. Once can be a mistake but twice starts to look like a pattern is all. Then, when you call a mayday because you can't breathe, you're risking everyone else's life due to your inability to shave. You need to rethink your mentality. "Get over myself"? It's an understanding that it's more than just myself. It is our jobs be ready at a moments notice, and go interior. Beards as a fireman scream HIHFTY. If you support that, you might as well chew big red gum.

    • @Fire-Rescue50
      @Fire-Rescue50  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @ryanwells248 Wanting to shave and wanting to train are two very different things. We train very often and that guy is one of our most active members. This area is full of amish firefighters, and because of that, almost no department around has a shaving requirement. To follow up on that, I'm not going to say it has never happened, but at least in our county and surrounding ones, I have never heard of anyone calling a mayday or dying in the line of duty, and their facial hair being the cause. Trust me when I say we are not a HIHFTY department. We train to be fast and aggressive, and to go interior. I know beards are one of those things, but there are far worse things that some volunteer departments are doing across the country.

    EU here: what is that thing going round and round on the left? is that lights? like red lights on and off?

    • @MaxLai_0104

      Saw a comment saying it was just another emergency light that catches attention better or something.

      It’s called a rotoray, it’s typically two red lights and a white light, or it’s two white lights and a red light. It’s just to catch attention as it spins. There’s no real justification of their use anymore they are just used for the sake of tradition but they are still effective.

    Would have loved to watch the on-scene footage, but it was all filmed in dizzy-cam so I had to punch out.

    It's pretty sad how many people are completely oblivious to what's going on while they are driving. The urgent swerving to the right when a 60,000 lb giant ass vehicle with flashing lights and 3 different sirens are 100' behind you, but you should have seen _SOMETHING_ in your rearview mirrors 10 seconds ago is telling how many people are really paying attention.

    Don't you guys have the sirens wired into the horn circuit so the horn acts as a modulator switch for the sirens, to save you from faffing around with the control unit?

    • @AppalachianMountaineer1863
      @AppalachianMountaineer1863 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There’s foot pedals that drive the Q siren and the Grover horn. I’m sure there’s some departments that might use some type of horn circuit but I’ve not seen it ever before. Typically the driver just drives and doesn’t handle the siren or horn.
