Neon Studios released 2 big horror movies in 2024. This was one of them. The other one was CUCKOO. You have to react to that one too (comes to streaming on September 17).
TW: TL;DR The psychic eval test scene should've been people's first indication that the rest of the film really wasn't going to be based on grounded reality. -Somebody already pointed out that Lee associates an upside-down triangle with "Father" during her psychic eval, which shows up throughout the rest of the film, notably when the light fixture in her cabin briefly appears like one when she exits it to look at the intruder/Longlegs she saw outside (9:47). An upside-down triangle is associated with both femininity/motherhood and an inversion of the holy trinity. While I don't think Longlegs' is Lee's ACTUAL father, he metaphorically serves as such, and is an anti-father in his destruction of them and his feminine appearance. -There is a right-side up triangle in Carter's office (6:08, albeit covered) when he first introduces Lee to the board full of evidence on Longlegs. It's even got dots on it like the algorithm Lee produces when connecting the dates of the murders together. The rest of this movie unfolding is like that triangle turning upside-down; Carter is the last father on the devil's algorithm. -"Camera" was another word Lee spoke during the psychic eval, referring of course to Carrie-Ann Camera (an uncredited cameo by Kiernan Shipka, who performed all of that in one take) and the camera young Lee uses to take a picture of Longlegs. -Did you catch the reference to Jodie Foster? MISS RUBY: DId you want to be an FBI agent when you were a little girl? LEE: Actually, I wanted to become an actress. MISS RUBY: But that'll mess you up. Jodie Foster had a career as a child actress which really messed her up psychologically when John Hinckley Jr. saw her in 1976's _Taxi Driver_ , starting his obsession with her to the point that he tried to off the president just to get her attention. -I've heard the theory that Longlegs is a demon-possessed human rather than a willing satanist and his quite frankly ICONIC freakout scene in the car was his human side trying to come out, but I don't really see it. I think he was just embarrassed by the girl in the store...or he was imitating her screams of agony after he'd finished killing her and her entire family. Just a thought. -Longlegs looks like a midlife crisis-aged Jeff the Killer with a Miss Piggy nose. -Alicia Witt (Ruth Harker) is exactly only seventeen years and nine months older than Maika Monroe. Humor me here, but what if Ruth got pregnant with Lee at the tender age of seventeen, with the baby daddy either too young to commit (or perhaps, scandalously, too old to admit it) and that's why out of all the families Longlegs visited Lee was the only one without a father? -The dolls control everyone in the house to some extent; it makes the females/mother and daughter(s) compliant so they don't run away and it makes the males/fathers violent enough to kill them. I think Ruth always recovered 'used' dolls from every crime scene but for Carrie-Ann, the only daughter who never died, she left hers behind to prevent her from remembering, and she only remembered when the metal orb was taken out. In Lee's case growing up, it made her so compliant to the point of erasing her memories of Longlegs for years. I also think that it was that same compliance forced on her which prevented her from shooting Ruby's doll in the end...or she willingly stopped herself doing so because she didn't want Ruby to remember that her parents are dead.
@@LOWBORN-the-LOATHSOME while editing, I did notice how Carrie-Ann become conscious once the ball was separated. This is a great dissection of the film dude. Definitely appreciate the input 🤙🏻🤙🏻
This was a really good review. I also really appreciate the clever little edits throughout the video, so props to your editor! Just wanted to note - somewhere on TH-cam, I saw a clip of Cage talking about his inspiration for his performance. Apparently, his mother used to put cold cream on her face and proceed to say "Cuckoo! Cuckoo!" - which we saw in the film. I can't recall what the name of the video was, but look up the film title and Nic Cage. If I find the clip, I'll come back and post it here. Great reaction!
This is definitely the movie of 2024. it must have taken tremendous willpower to abstain from seeing this in the theater. Great reaction to a very dark and bizarre ride of a film.
I liked it, but didn't love it, maybe it was overhyped to me lol but I think it will grow on me. I did love the atmosphere of the whole movie, and Nick Cage was insanely insane. Always fun watching with you too Rob
When the inverted triangle came up on the test she said Father. Longlegs has inverted triangles all over his workshop. He looks like Robert Smith if he had tons of botox and plastic surgery. lmao I thought the whole cast was perfect! They all knew what movie they were in. 🥲🤗🫶🥰❤🖤
So far, my favorite horror movie of 2024, really love this movie, it has so many layers and hidden messages, plus her slightly ''autistic'' & ''psychic'' character make seven more sense when its twist with the occult theme is revealed. Btw, Rob, talkin' 'bout detective movies with a serial killer, have you ever watched ''Zodiac'' (2007), it's one of the greatest movies of the last 25 years.
You're good enough, you're smart enough, and doggonit people like you! You figured out a lot early on (earlier than me) and I'm glad you liked this! Blair Underwood does need to do more in this genre, Maika Monroe keeps needing to do more in this genre, and Oz Perkins should just keep doing what he does. 👍👍 #makesureyourfriendsareokay
Thoroughly enjoyed this and for me it lived up to the sizeable hype that snowballed with it. I'm going to have to give it another viewing to wrap my head around Cage's performance though. His singing about home invasion is a hard memory to shake
@@therobw fun fact for you. The reason long legs is "cuckooing" is because he's mimicking the cuckoo bird. Which is notorious for leaving their eggs in other nests and their offspring pushes the other eggs off. And longlegs takes lee's childhood home by "nesting" in their basement
@@therobw also to answer who longlegs resembles, he looks like a 70`s-80's rockstar. The makeup, shaggy long hair, the T-Rex references, and the way he sings as well
I was disappointed by this movie. The tension build-up to the reveal of the mom was SO good, I was hoping for something more than “the devil made me do it.” Also kinda saw that coming, so it wasn’t a big twist to me, it was just kinda tired. Like, this feels like an archaic fear to me. I dunno. Would’ve loved a more grounded explanation, a more horrifying serial killer story, more of the plot holes (that apparently ARGs online explain a lot of) to add up. Just felt like holding my breath the whole time for no release. 🤷🏻
so i also watched it at home but at night with no lights on. i wanted to watch a late night viewing in theaters but couldnt and i almost wish i did cause i wouldve been alone in that showing and i def wouldve screamed if staff or a latecomer came in LOL. loved this movie, i was uncomfortable throughout as well as like you said i just wanted to do so much research on this cause i wanted more.
The decoded message "Down low - too slow." really convinced me there's no winning against Mr. Downstairs. Because by the time you've figured it out, he's probably already used you or has you as a thrall.
Yoo! Dope reaction Rob 💯 Do you think this going to make your top 5 horrors for this year so far? I probably got it at #2 after Romulus I loved the Acting and the overall atmosphere of it definitely a 9+/10 for me
I love this movie - but I can see why some might not - and it’s primarily down to the fact that having some knowledge as to how Perkins does his thing helps appreciate it more. He’s the master of ambiguity and leaving things up in the air - it’s effectively his calling card at this point - personally I love it, but it’s an acquired taste. Another thing he’s masterful at is dropping little hints here and there - and “Longlegs” has many - just going to go through a few: 1 - It takes about 5 minutes for the viewer to figure out that there’s something a little... odd, about Lee. She’s stilted, weirdly unemotional, awkward - quite frankly she comes across as someone on the spectrum. But there’s another little hint as to what the truth is... and it’s right there from the beginning. Notice how Lee walks - slightly hunched, stiff long strides, head down, arms basically clamped to her sides - her arms basically don’t leave her side for the entire first 2/3 of the movie - why is that? It’s a doll allegory - she walks like a doll being played with. At the end of the movie, we know why. Also - she’s much more animated after Ruth shoots the doll. 2 - Ruth isn’t handicapped, she’s obviously troubled, but she’s not handicapped - why is one of the defining traits of her character through the movie that she takes a long time to pick the phone up? The viewer is led to believe it’s a quirk... truth is she’s in the basement and it takes a while to get upstairs. The only real time Ruth shows any true mirth during the film is when Lee tells her that she doesn’t pray and haven’t prayed in a long time - she cackles, but then seems oddly proud of Lee for coming to that realization - we know why in hindsight. And about Ruth - and I’ll just say it: “Hail Alicia Witt” - the ending is horrific, in a tragic sense. It’s clear that her reasons for doing what she’s doing is no longer about keeping her daughter safe, or not entirely, that is. And she tells on herself when she says: “I’ll do it again, and again, and again - and that makes it right” (the notion of protecting Lee) - at some point Ruth stopped caring about the justifications and Lee became a giant permission slip for her to keep pleasing “Father” Which brings us to the ending: “Father” has a plan for Lee, Ruth, Longlegs - for everybody. And Longlegs tells Lee exactly what her endgame is in the interrogation when he tells Lee that he’ll “let her get started now” - up until that point Lee has simply been a pawn, Satan has moved her around on the board a little, but nothing indicative of what her fate is - until Longlegs tells her the aforementioned. Lee’s life has been like one of those toy cars that you wind up by pulling it backwards and letting it go - to her “birthday party” Lee’s fate was always to know the truth, about herself, about Longlegs, about her mother - and having to live with that knowledge and the visual of her mother’s body slumped on that couch - and that she’s the reason for it. It’s why the gun clicks when she tries to shoot the doll - the devil planned it that way - she’s meant to “savor” the moment - twist and burn, little girl, forever. “Hail Satan”
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it as much as I did Rob. I had the opportunity to see it at the movie theatre and I was creeped out throughout the whole movie. I don't understand people who are saying it sucked and that it was a huge disappointment. I understand that it might not be for everyone but to say that it's one of the worst movies to have come out this year??? But I guess to each one their own. Great reaction Rob. Looking forward to the next one.
@@therobw Yeah I'm interested in your thoughts as well. IMO, there's especially one particular scene of complete incompetency that bothered me so I'm wondering if you'd pick up on that as well.
I'll say this little detail that I don't think you mentioned. She wanted to be a actor. Long legs was a singer. These are things were people are known to sell they're soul for. So when she switched to a cop, long legs and the devil laughed because yes he plays games with people but this was going to be something more fun for him.
i watched it for the first time last night and by the end it left me without any words and even without air for a second like it was so fucking amazing but also omfg it was too much not many horror movies do that to me

How many people or reactors do we see jump so hard, eyes wide open and fists yanked up into a boxing posture protecting the face leaning backwards , fists closed ready to punch !? lol I’m just always fascinated when I feel or experience moments in my life where I feel such a large amount of an emotion in an event so much it cements in my mind all my life , like looking into my Angel daughters open eyes the first time I held her as a newborn , the most happy , peaceful, good , hopeful, light feeling of my life ,..and on the other side , watching a movie reaction on TH-cam and 30 seconds in , an actor plays a character saying a few words that make me feel SO uncomfortable and gross and spooked out that I’m going to have nightmares tonight lol, I’d say that’s the sign of a good actor and top tier horror movie!
Have you seen “The Blackcoats Daugbter”? Think it’s a Netflix movie but it feels identical to this but more evil somehow lol

Neon Studios released 2 big horror movies in 2024. This was one of them. The other one was CUCKOO. You have to react to that one too (comes to streaming on September 17).
Stoked for Cuckoo!
The most chill movie reactor I have watched yet. Cool dude and awesome movie.

TW: TL;DR
The psychic eval test scene should've been people's first indication that the rest of the film really wasn't going to be based on grounded reality.
Excellent read. 🤘🏻
Haha I love that. You can tell he really brought a lot of his own ideas of what that character was. Thanks for checking out the reaction! :)
This is definitely the movie of 2024. it must have taken tremendous willpower to abstain from seeing this in the theater.
Great reaction to a very dark and bizarre ride of a film.
I would be shocked if something topped this
I liked it, but didn't love it, maybe it was overhyped to me lol but I think it will grow on me.
Oh I didn’t even catch that. This movie definitely demands repeat viewings
I love Osgood Perkins. Longlegs and Blackcoat's Daughter has made him one of my favorite horror directors
@@Christianplus10 psyched for his new movie coming out soon!
🔥🔥🔥 editing on this one as well btw
#makesureyourfriendsareokay
I read an interview with Blair Underwood saying he wants to be in a Saw movie. Sign him up! Thanks for checking out the video Sarah :)
Glad to see you liked it. I really didn’t like it, but to each their own.

Hey Rob will you add Antlers to your list? I think you’ll like it if you liked this

Thoroughly enjoyed this and for me it lived up to the sizeable hype that snowballed with it. I'm going to have to give it another viewing to wrap my head around Cage's performance though. His singing about home invasion is a hard memory to shake
Haha that was something else man
@@therobw I was just sat there nervously chuckling. That got right under the skin 😂

He was pretty unrecognizable
Yes!!! I was waiting for you to watch it! I watched it and the cinematography was amazing. Plus, you can never go wrong with Nicholas cage!
Hell yeah dude!
@@1219stiles nice!
I agree. I wanted something along the lines of "he's a charismatic cult leader capable of manipulating his followers to kill" situation as well.
In some scenes you can see the devil in the back
I noticed that!
so i also watched it at home but at night with no lights on. i wanted to watch a late night viewing in theaters but couldnt and i almost wish i did cause i wouldve been alone in that showing and i def wouldve screamed if staff or a latecomer came in LOL. loved this movie, i was uncomfortable throughout as well as like you said i just wanted to do so much research on this cause i wanted more.
I love movies that make me do investigative work afterwords. Definitely lived up to the hype
The decoded message "Down low - too slow." really convinced me there's no winning against Mr. Downstairs. Because by the time you've figured it out, he's probably already used you or has you as a thrall.

Yessir been waiting on this definitely a contender of best horror movie of the year. Let’s see what terrifier 3 brings to the table next😤
Yoo! Dope reaction Rob 💯 Do you think this going to make your top 5 horrors for this year so far? I probably got it at #2 after Romulus I loved the Acting and the overall atmosphere of it definitely a 9+/10 for me
Yeah this is easily top 3 so far. Psyched to see Alien!
I really enjoyed this movie. Makes you brainstorm
Another thing he’s masterful at is dropping little hints here and there - and “Longlegs” has many - just going to go through a few:
1 - It takes about 5 minutes for the viewer to figure out that there’s something a little... odd, about Lee.
And she tells on herself when she says: “I’ll do it again, and again, and again - and that makes it right” (the notion of protecting Lee) - at some point Ruth stopped caring about the justifications and Lee became a giant permission slip for her to keep pleasing “Father”
Which brings us to the ending:
“Father” has a plan for Lee, Ruth, Longlegs - for everybody.
Lee’s life has been like one of those toy cars that you wind up by pulling it backwards and letting it go - to her “birthday party”
Lee’s fate was always to know the truth, about herself, about Longlegs, about her mother - and having to live with that knowledge and the visual of her mother’s body slumped on that couch - and that she’s the reason for it. It’s why the gun clicks when she tries to shoot the doll - the devil planned it that way - she’s meant to “savor” the moment - twist and burn, little girl, forever.
“Hail Satan”
Thanks for well written break down! This movie deserves dissection for sure
@@therobw It really does.. theres so much weird shit you dont necessarily catch on the first watch.
I'm so glad that you enjoyed it as much as I did Rob. I had the opportunity to see it at the movie theatre and I was creeped out throughout the whole movie. If you like Blair Underwood and movies about hunting serial killers, I highly recommend Just Cause. First movie I ever saw him in. Also stars Sean Connery (not a fan for personal reasons, don't like men who think it's fine to slap women to keep them in line), Laurence Fishburne, and Ed Harris.
