I’m really wary about just assuming Valkyrie is going to be a love interest. I really hope she isn’t.
Also, don’t we already have a couple female leads in this franchise that aren’t “underwritten girlfriends types”?

The movie is terribly written. What are you on. Thor's best friends die, one is missing, and he doesn't ask a question. Imagine if midway through Spider-Man 2 Harry Osborn would die in a car crash and Peter Parker would never even react to that. Abysmal writing.

Hey what's up you guys my name is Everett and I'm visually impaired completely and I do want to apologize in advance if this text comes out weird it's not me it's because my phone has voice over and the voiceover doesn't get everything sometimes but yeah you know the first one was one of my is one of my favorite movies of all time and I really do not like Ragnarok I know everybody dies but I just didn't I feel like it took him in a completely 180 Direction you know they made him way too funny the problem is is that when Guardians of the Galaxy came out that supposed to be funny because it's supposed to match the tone of that movie but the problem is is that the tone of that movie blood into all the other movies and it didn't match the tone that it was previously established before I didn't like Ragnarok I thought it was lame I thought that you know him losing his hammer and then cutting his hair stalked and then to reverse that in Infinity war and give him an axe which was all right I guess but you know I just feel like the first one is the best one out of the three because that's who he is you know he's a God and he's supposed to be taking like a god the problem is is that in the third one they made him an idiot they made him way too funny and I couldn't have any emotion during the emotional scenes that were supposed to be emotional because they would just put a joke in there right after

I read through many of the comments and no one noticed a MOMUMENTAL plot hole in the movie. The fight with Hela would have lasted a whole 3 seconds if only Valkarie had brought along those non-lethal weapons of hers. She bagged Thor twice with those things. They probably even used them on the hulk, I mean how did they catch him? So ridiculous, why not bring them along for hela?!?

I know I'm in the minority, which means that the studio made the right decision by their larger audience too so what they did, but I was a much bigger fan of the more serious, dramatic and Hulk. One's supposed to be a literal god, and the other is practically a god. Some of Ragnarok's jokes felt like gags at the expense of the characters.

One thing I really didn't enjoy about Ragnarok was how the guys who I think were Thor's close friends were killed off and treated like after thoughts. There was also the scene with that one guy getting executed where I think Thor was a little less objective and having a more childish reaction to someone being painfully killed in front of him. Though it seems like superheros being able to easily and near completely ignore terrible things going on around them is par for the course these days.

I left the theatre going "wow finally Thor got some personality of his own instead of always just Loki" so yeah I totally agree with everything you said about Thor's character here :)

  • @mytruepower2
    @mytruepower2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Well, I didn't enjoy Ragnarok very much at all, but I have to agree with your point about the Thor/Loki dynamic in this film. It really was better than in the two films before it. I guess my main problem with the Thor movies is that the people making them don't seem to get that you can have absurdity, and also have gravitas to go with it, which is strange, since movies like Ghostbusters and the Matrix have been doing it for ages.
I felt this movie was much too comedic in general, didn't take itself nearly seriously enough, considering the shattering events that take place during it. It seemed to want to bash, smash and destroy everything in Thor's canon, but without treating any of that wanton destruction with the seriousness that it deserves. In a way, it reminded me of the Joker; causing havok and mayhem with a great, big smile.
And yes, I know you didn't mention the villain, but throughout the whole movie, I just kept wondering to myself, why she couldn't have been given more of an alien, dispassionate presence, like Gozer, if she was going to be that kind of threat. The most terrifying villains are the ones who seem different, inhuman and unknowable in some way, which is especially easy to pull off with a diety-level villain. I just don't see why they decided to make Hela such a lame villain.
As for the Hulk, I was generally okay with him, though I would have preferred if there'd been more of an explanation of how he suddenly changed as a person, and started chatting up a storm. Or, you know, any explanation at all.
Sakaar was goofy, but in a way, I really don't mind that as much. Had it been the comic relief setting of an otherwise-serious movie, I would have raised no issue with it, but I just didn't feel like it added much to the mood of the film, even if it was a nice place to visit, and very well-designed.
Through it all, I've yet to see any situation in which Thor has demonstrated the strong, heroic presence that he had in the comics, which apart from the kind of techno-settings of Asgard, may be the biggest loss. Larger-than-life heroes are not exactly a dime a dozen in fiction anymore, and it's a pity that Thor couldn't have been one.

On the topic of Thor 3 - the trailer is a great example of everything not to do in a trailer. It spoiled Hulk. It spoiled mewmew's destruction. I haven't watched it in a while but I wouldn't be surprised if it spoiled Odin's death.
I like trailers that are like "alien" - I get that studios want engagement and to do that they need to reveal hints or spoilers in their trailers, but it completely ruins the movie going experience

  • @DrMadd

I didn't really like Thor Ragnarok. It was okay but I thought a movie about the end of the world would have me care more than I did. The things I did like such as the comedy and the visuals were superficial elements that I gladly would have traded for a better plot. I know there are lots of people who think Marvel movies are too jokey and this was the first that really made me feel that way.
It also didn't help that as a fan of the comics I was let down by many character portrayals like Hela, Korg and especially Meik.
BTW did they ever say Grandmaster is related to the Collector and Ego like in the comics? Just curious cause if so we can expect to see more of him in the future and more Golblum would be great.

I saw Thor 3 only a week ago, and I loved it. This one felt more like a Flash Gordon movie. The only problem I had with it was the casting for Valkyrie. It should've been a blonde bombshell, and a woman who had some chemistry with Thor. The end shouldn't hinted that they were pairing up and would rule over the Battlestar Asguard together.

Great Video, and i think it is also true that this movie was the best but i think its hard to see how Taika Waitit isnt mentioned in this video! he is the reason the movie turned out the way it did. He decided to change the original script to remove common tropes from previous MCU movies and then he directed the acting in his comedic style allowing free form dialogue inspired by the script and only sticking to the script in one scene (Thor and Loki in the elevator). Taika Waititi's directing cant be understated, take him out and you have a very different movie.
P.S he is also the voice of Korg

There is a fan theory that during a flashback fight with Hela, another (blond) Valkyrie threw (Tessa) Valkyrie into a convenient wormhole that sent her to Sakaar. Thus, allowing Valkyrie to live in exile where Thor finds her, (sort of).

I am so sick of people saying this was the best Thor movie because it wasn’t in any way! It was funny. It was a not bad movie. But wasn’t amazing! It’s just an mcu movie it doesn’t fit Thor.... the first Thor movie fit a sci-fi/ fantasy tone, fit into the mcu, was a good movie and created the most beloved mcu villain. Thor Ragnarok *spoilers* killed important side characters without blinking an eye despite trying to have a light hearted happy go luck tone, didn’t take a break from the jokes to mourn anything (unlike guardians of the galaxy 2), completely changed Thor’s personality, had nothing about Sif, brushes off Odin’s bad dad stuff like it was no big deal, barely fleshed out a interesting villain and last and most important didn’t tell Bruce Banner than Hulk *killed* people!!! But the Doctor Strange part was good!

"important side characters” And you already lost me.
"didn’t take a break from the jokes to mourn anything” Oh yeah, it totally didn’t have a scene that depicted Thor literally praying that Odin would reach Valhalla.
"brushes off Odin’s bad dad stuff like it was no big deal” What, you mean the entire reason the plot happens? Even Odin recognized how much he fucked up.
"and most important didn’t tell Bruce Banner than Hulk killed people” I don’t understand your priorities.
This is the type of criticism that shouldn’t be payed attention to.

Might be an unpopular opinion on this, but I'd rather they go in the direction of making Valkyrie a love interest for Hulk instead of Thor. Thor was saddled down by his Jane Foster romance in the first two films, and he was a lot of fun in Ragnarok. And unlike Tony and Pepper Potts, Thor felt very defined by being in a relationship. I'd like to see him fly solo and get development outside of romance. More than that, I really liked the interaction Valkyrie and Hulk/Bruce Banner than I did her with Thor.

What happened to going to a movie to get away from this stress filled reality we live in for 2hrs ?? Like what's wrong with that ?? It's what this movie achieves brilliantly!!!

Actually, I think Thor Ragnarok destroyed the first two movies - NOT in a good way. You can really tell there was no real dialog scripted. Thor possessed by Peewee Herman? Even Lebowski Thor was a step up.

  • @philipmoore4275
    @philipmoore4275 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I don’t understand what are people’s problem with the first 2 Thor films. Everyone has their preferences and opinions, but I think people are over-analyzing and over-criticizing the films. The first two were about character development. I found Asgard majestic and stunning. It was the first time audiences were shown a world beyond Earth in the MCU, and I thought they did a good job. The small desert town was a nice contrast to the splendor of Asgard, but I guess there’s no pleasing some people. Can’t make everyone happy. To me Thor matured a lot in the first film, and in the second we got to enjoy that matured Thor. Thor 2 introduced one of the Infinity Stones, and shows off it’s power. People complain about some of the villains in the MCU, like they are going to extend from movie to movie. They did that with X-men, and I hated it. They kept using Magneto over and over, beating a dead horse. Some of the villains are meant to be one shots. The films revolve around a pivotal moment in these character’s lives, such as dealing with a problem, not them going to the toilet. Jane Foster is just meant to be the girlfriend, that played out and now there is a more potentially interesting love interest. One that can contribute. Jane could not have done what Valkyrie does in Ragnarock. Including her was paying homage to the source material. One of the complaints about the MCU is the lack of deaths, as if there is no consequences. To my knowledge, The Dark World is only the second film to kill off a supporting character that is not a villain. Frigga, Thor’s mother is killed, that’s significant, and it’s a step to Odin’s death. The films are an arc of Thor’s development and the evolution of Asgard from a high point to destruction, and hopefully rebirth. Assuming the refugee Asgardians aren’t all killed by Thanos, I’m assuming they were headed to that place in Norway where Odin says is home. I personally love all of the Marvel movies, except the Incredible Hulk. I don’t include that one. Of course there are some things I would do differently, but I’m not making the movies. If y’all want to complain about something, complain about the DC cinematic universe. There is plenty there to complain about. Or complain about how Disney jacked up Star Wars. Now that’s something to complain about.

I wish the Ragnarok part had been kept as a separate movie - or better - used to violate expectations by putting it off screen. The gladiator world was a thousand times better. And the comedy destroyed the dramatic tension. I loved the humour but they didn't understand how to make it work with the drama.

Jeez, talk about people who are easily pleased. Ragnorok looked great but Thor isn't a fkin comedian for a start. 'Jokes' were shoehorned in everywhere! Right at the beginning all of the tension in the opening scene was gone with 'comedy' Thor. Even Banner was turned into a comedian?? And the final [tragic] scene with the death of all those Asgardians and we get Watiti throwing out yet ANOTHER joke?! Just shows; 1) How dumbed downed people. 2) That most knew nothing about how Thor is in the comics. And all they needed to see was a great- looking movie with very good action and a weak script but with loads of (mainly forced out of place) comedy as a brilliant film.

I hate 'Thor: Ragnarok' too... but I don't think it's Chris Hemsworth's fault. Taika Waititi decided to make Thor "awesome" by neutering Loki rather than developing Thor. Whether Waititi got directions from above to relegate Loki to comic relief by studio execs who were miffed that so many fans thought Loki was superior to Thor as a character is unknown... but at this point, nothing from Ike Perlmutter would surprise me.

I personaly didn't like Ragnarok at all. Such a serious topic like the end of the world turned into a joke. All of Thor's best friends died in a flash and all of those asgardians too without a single tone of sadness. It was like oh, well no big deal. Everything built in the first two movies was scrabbed. Thor's relationship with Jane Foster was so seriously focused and now - well she dumpped me... at least they should have discarted the character with some style. The end was so lame 4 against 100000 and Hella. Asgard dead and again - oh well it is a people not a place, like some joke. I'm sorry, but thor should have been a more serious movie, as teased in Age of Ultron. Odin's death, Hella, Ragnarok... a comedy. I am sooo disappointed with this movie. The second was way better in and added to the story. This one felt separate from the first two and Thor was a clown. Kate did a great job with Hella, but was let to waste... My oppinion of course.

I agree also. In fact, I really hope they *don't* become love interests. I don't think they are particularly compatible that way -- I don't think they'd ever let themselves be vulnerable and open to each other the way that a deeper, romantic relationship necessitates. I also think it would, to much of the audience, cheapen Valkyrie's character.
Intentionally or not, it would reduce her value and role in the MCU to the eyes of many as just another love interest. How many women can we think of in action movies that play a decently important role? How many of those are or became love interests? How many of them retained their importance to the plot since becoming a love interest? I can't think of many. But there's plenty more out there that serve next to no purpose other than as a love interest. Minimal value or agency of her own.
Sure, Black Widow became Bruce's love interest, but because they rarely ever talk about it or make it a large plot point, and because of her relationship with Steve, in particular, her value to the story is not reduced. She has more parts to play and is still valued, as seen in Civil War. Although, that also created the problem of a half-assed romance side story. We get next to nothing on her romance with Bruce and the Hulk. It can calm the Hulk down, but we get little else than that.
I don't want to risk Valkyrie becoming regulated one of the many "underwritten-superhero-girlfriend type" as captainmidnight mentioned referring to Jane.

He was angry because Thor was going to be made king despite his obvious incompetence, which I think is just another reason he thought Odin favored Thor. THEN he discovered he was adopted and I think honestly all that happened was that he overreacted. In his mind, that was the reason Odin preferred Thor over him and all his actions after that have just been him trying to prove himself. He doesn't hate Odin but I think he hates what Odin made him feel.

I keep hearing by people how "every dramatic scene is underminded by comedy" and have to ask myself: did we see the same movie? Yeah, Thor 3 is incredibly comedic but the emotionally loaded scenes had absolutely no comedy attatched:
    - Odin's death is played extremely serious, he has a gut wrenching moment with his kids and then fades out of existence, Thor is visually pissed and Loki is devestated. There's zero comedy in there
    - Heimdall saving the citizens of Asgaard is taken serious as hell and creates a lot of tension
    - The Hulk turning back into Banner when seeing Widow talking to him actually made me feel sad for the character
    - Valkyrie's past during her fight with Loki has no joke attatched either and underlines her tragic origins
so really...the movie didn't hurt it's serious scenes with Comedy. After hearing all the outcry over the humor I was surprised the film didn't have more jokes than it ultimately had
It's almost as if people jump every opportunity they have to find a flaw they can exploit

Hmmm. I'm genuinely surprised the first Thor movie doesn't get more love. The stuff said here about Thor, and Asgard is a little off. The way Asgard is shown especially in the first film, is magnificent. Giant golden structures, beautiful rainbow bridge, Majestic Bifrost with a view into the colorful starry cosmos. The colors popped in a lot of more organic ways in the second film with elements of a Game of Thrones aesthetic thrown in. In many ways Thor Ragnarok is borrowing the same "lived in" colorful world already established in the Guardians films, and looks to be repeated to an extent in the upcoming Black Panther film.
Dark world was a little weak, but the first Thor film was very solid. The only thing that seems to be different in Ragnarok is the tone is lighter, the characters are lighter, and the film has a more improvisational comedy vibe which doesn't always work. I personally liked Ragnarok, but the lore established in the first film, and the performances from Anthony Hopkins, and Tom Hiddleston's breakout portrayal of Odin and Loki really makes the first Thor film my favorite.

Thor losing his eye was a metaphor for Odin losing his eye. Odin gave up his eye for wisdom or for some truth, Thor losing his eye signified that he finally recognized the truth that the people matter, not the name or location. Him losing his eye represented him moving on from the loss of his Father and his Hammer and willingly taking the role as the ruler of Asgard (the people). Odin initially was a Warlord, but he then realized that Hela's War would never end so he locked her up and threw away the key. History is written for the winners and Odin took this chance. Ragnarok has the main cast dealing with their past in a certain way, Hulk/Banner confronted his past by seeing that video of Black Widow. Valkyrie found Solace in her's by realizing that she has to confront Hela, and Loki has to move on after being accepted by Thor for who he is. Thor needed to recover though, he lost two members of his family in one day (Mjolnir and Odin) but he never lets that bring him down, he accepts and realizes the truth that Odin knew when he lost his eye.
For all the talk people give Ragnarok about it not giving enough emotional space, it offers good ideals and messages to live by.
"Asgard is not a place, it is a people." This is said in the movie but it's expressed alot in the end.
Marvel went with comedy this to play it safe and it worked out. Suprise! The Thor and Loki dynamic was waaay better in this movie than the others. I always wonder why people think that Shakespearian Thor is soooo much better than getting Chris Hemsworth Thor? But at the end of the day, you guys are you, and I'm me.
Comedy never ruined Thor: Ragnarok, the last two movies weren't anything special, but Ragnarok brought something new to the table; value. I never cared about Asgard or anything else in the last two movies, but I did after seeing Ragnarok. "Asgard is not a place, it is a people." Those were valuable words to me, they gave me the message that things matter when your friends and family are there with you. That's a good ideal to live by. Things won't ever be the same.

exactly and credit should go to taika waititi for balancing humor but also tragedy as it's a common theme with all of his other films. plus, i loved the fact that the characters we had seen before are given a chance to grow up. loki finally having to let go of his jealousy and insecurities to help the people of asgard while thor finally accepting the role he has to do and hoping he doesn't repeat the mistakes that his father had done. it was all going well in the end until..... thanos.

I found Thor: Ragnarok to be very entertaining, but recognize why some people hated it: Instead of being too dramatic and dull, it was swung to the opposite extreme. That made the Planet Hulk part of the film pure gold, but the parts with Hela and Asgard should have been approached with more dramatic flair.

    • @hallo4411
      @hallo4411 2 ปีที่แล้ว

exactly. Also there was much more dramatic potential with hulk. Like Thor who lied to both of his sides that he liked hulk more or banner, just bc he needed the other one at this moment. I feel there was so much potential, which would have made the film great for more audiences.
Also the loki and thor relationship in the light of hela. Loki is like look our dad is just an ass belive me now and thor doesn't seem to care as much about it. It's there but really in the background I wish they embraced the full potential of a perfect marriage of drama and humor, instead of going haha deep moment interrupted haha.

I genuinely hated that moment. It's the worst moment of the entire film. They spend the middle part of the movie establishing that Banner doesn't exist anymore inside Hulk and that he's terrified to transform again. Doing so could mean the practical "death" of Bruce Banner forever. His decision to change into Hulk was a dramatic moment of self-sacrifice that should've had gravitas and sincerity. It was as serious/sad as, say, Stark flying the nuke through the portal.
Instead they made a rag doll joke. Bathos at its absolute worst.

    • @hakamadam8258
      @hakamadam8258 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

In real life, heroism isn't perfectly choreographed with your enemies responding with fear and trembling exactly as you would want them to, on cue. It's the same thing I liked about GOTG:1 - it adds a perfectly realistic level of subversion-of-expectations humor that would make perfect sense if the characters didn't know they were in a movie and bound by movie rules to always execute the cliche's perfectly. So it's fine by me.

But all the jokes ruined the movies. This could have been the best MCU film to date if they had been a bit serious at times like when asgard was destroyed or when the army was killed off.

Can Chris Nolan or Zack Snyder reboot this miserable franchise and make it an epic saga about Norse Thundergod riding into battles with his bretherens to protect all the realms from evil and unkind beings? Oh, and have Thor actually speak like Thor of the comics, with all the "aye" and "thee nay" archaisms? Thanks.

Guess I'm one of the few who loved the Thor comics and the first two movies, so I have no love for Ragnarok. If I want camp I'll watch the old Batman show I grew up watching.
Ragnarok was played for the quick and easy laugh, and to appeal to the short attention spans that now exist. So it's filled with silly sight gags, easy one-liners, and circus side show characters, the worst of which is the Grand Master, in which Jeff Goldblum was paid to be Jeff Goldblum.
This story line wastes Thor's closest companions, treating them more like The Three Stooges than The Warriors Three, inept and ineffectual.
I had high hopes for Ragnarok, but they were all dashed on the rocks of a cheap and easy laugh.

I honestly feel that Ragnarok's comedy actually hit me more genuinely than any joke in the Guardians of the Galaxy films as much as I love them as well. But the thing I do like about those movies is that they know when to stop quiet for a second and let a dramatic moment play out and when to jump back into the comedy when it's done.
Kinda feel like a lot of dramatic tension is either lost or cut short a bit too fast like in SPOILERS SPOILERS. Odin's death scene. And that wasn't really undercut by comedy something just felt a little downplayed with it.
That said if you hate the look of this movie then you hate the look of the classic comics and that's disrespecting the history that made this universe in the first place. Much of it was crazy and colorful and right out of Kirby's art and if anything in the film I appreciated that a lot. I'm glad that we're finally getting to the point where film makers aren't scared to embrace the comic bookiness of comic books.

It's a shame that Hela is still just a completely worthless plot and character. She's still the best villain of Thor's movies, but considering her competition is a faceless hollow robot and the dark elf so forgettable I refuse to believe anyone can remember one detail of, that's not much of a compliment. Still, she's so bad that even the movie seems aware of it, making her inclusion more of an afterthought in the movie that just sort of stumbles into a resolution by the end with a line so cringe I'd swore I'd leapt back in time to that old Thor cartoon.

Yeah that's because it was played by him, and Taika put a true kiwi twist on the character, (that accent is an exaggerated Maori one, if you were wondering) Here in New Zealand we all love Taika and are so proud of his success with Ragnarok. I *loved* the original Thor movie. I loved the focus on Asgard and the fact that Jotunheim, not Earth, was the place Loki wanted to destroy. I find it beautiful both thematically and visually. The Dark World, however, suffered from some poor writing. I feel the film focused too much on Loki at the expense of the actual villain, and the amazing Chris Eccleston was criminally underused. Ragnarok is very entertaining, but it saddens me that it had to come at the expense of everything that came before. The original Thor is by far my favorite.
