How to Play Minor 7 Flat 5 Guitar Chords

  • Minor7flat5 chords? WTF? Although it may be a long name, these chords are a great way to enhance the sound of different chords in a progression.
    Learn two different voicings, an arpeggio and when to use this underappreciated chord while not being a jerk about it.

    This is the beautifully dark and elusive chord I was trying to identify in the B section of Uptown Girl.
    My theory isn't what it used to be, and I love rediscovering and relearning.
    Thank you for the upload!

    SRV and many others use that first m7flat5 shape quite often as a kind of substitute for a dominant 9 chord, sometimes adding the root note on the low E string themselves, or leaving it up to the bass player to hit it. The song "Tightrope" comes to mind.

    Theory wise I'm not sure I understand why that progression works. I know some people write Diminished for the 7th Chord in the Major Scale but some people also use Half Diminished and I'm not sure I understand why. I'm not even sure why the progression still worked when you stepped out to borrow the F# Minor 7 Flat 5 from the G key. So in your version of the Major diatonic chord scale at the end you're using Minor 7 Flat 5. In what scale would I see a Fully Diminished chord in its place? I guess I've sort of seen a secondary Dominant Chord where the Dominant Chord of another scale is dropped in a progression that then transitions back to a chord that is in the scale. I've never heard of a secondary Minor 7 Flat 5 though. How do I determine if another Minor 7 Flat 5 is going to work in your current key?

    Hello! Near the end of video there was an С ,Bm7b5 ,F#m7b5 progression.. I didnt get the idea - we took F# halfdiminished instead of Am (cause it is 75% consists of this chord) or for other reason ?

    B min. 7 b5 IS a kind of minor chord... It’s an altered minor chord in that it has an flatted 5th. There is also an minor 7 sharp 5 chord which is also a form of altered minor chord.

    hey Sean, we did put Bm7b5 but how do we put that on the rest of the chords like you did at the end? is that something we should just figure out?

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +george quintero I'm not sure if I completely understand the question. So if you make either of those shapes, you can slide them up and down the neck to make different chords (like if you move the Bm7b5 one fret higher it becomes a Cm7b5, then a C#m7b5 and so on.) I hope I interpreted that question right. Maybe if you could be a little more specific? I'd love to help!

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MyZombie45 Yeah actually I was just thinking about making a video on the benefits of other instruments and how to apply different concepts, etc. Is there any specific part of your piano theory you're struggling to apply? (chord building, scales, etc?)

    • @MyZombie45
      @MyZombie45 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know all my basic chords, along with a lot of advanced ones. But the bottom line is, I can't just sit with my guitar and figure out how to play a certain chord, like I can with a piano. So yes it's chord building, I'm mainly thinking about. Especially maj7 Chords and such.

    A simpler way for beginners to immediately find a minor flat five chord: play a major seventh chord a semitone below and then raise only the root by a semitone.
    C major 7: C E G B
    C# min 7 flat 5: C# E G B

    what if one also adjusts each notes of the scale to correspond with the desired key?
    (Don’t know what that’s called though)
    (for each individual notes of their respective scales vvv)
    for minor, I got 1: minor of course
    2: flat 2nd or 9th and minor 7th or 14th
    3rd: natural all the same exact notes. relative major.
    4th: sharp 6/major 6?
    or 13th/major 13th
    5th: flat 2 or 9th.
    6th:
    sharp 4th/augmented 4th?/diminished 5th??? or sharp 11th
    7th:
    flat 7th/minor 7th?
    and for major:
    1: major
    2: sharp 6th or 13th
    3rd: flat 2nd or 9th
    4th: sharp 4th or 11th
    5th: flat 7th or 14th
    6th: natural same exact notes
    7th: Flat 2nd or 9th,
    and minor 7th.
    hopefully im just over-analyzing because I’m confused to death, for the most part on this. one time even got worked into an anxiety attack

    Why is it a G dominant 7th chord and not a Major 7th chord in that last progression !?

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well anytime you make a chord starting on the 5th note a key (in the key of C's case, a G chord), the 7th note away from the root ends up being the same as a minor 7 interval, which is where dominant 7 chords come from.

    Surely I'll be ending the last song of my next album on a half diminished chord... #MandatoryAvocado

    I really love your video for this fantastic chord, but this doesn't really resolve well into C in your demonstration. Actually I find this chord's merit the other way around - not to make major chords sound merrier, but to produce a fresh tinge of sadness and longing *after* major or minor chord that cannot be achieved using regular minor chords. Think "Nature boy" by Nat King Cole. THis whole song is basically founded on this chord, and it's this chord that makes it haunting, sad and beautiful at the same time.

      Like the chord spelling? It starts on the 7the note of a key and goes '1 b3 b5 b7'
