  • Recently there's been some new character sheets designed with individuals with dyslexia in mind. Dawn reviews several of these character sheets and goes on a slight rant.

    Thank you Damn. :) Seriously though this is useful and helpful and not just for those with dyslexia. I, for one, really appreciate the level of honesty you bring to these. Your passion to help others shows through. Thanks again for taking on a tough topic and being honest about that site.

      It took me seeing this comment three times before I caught the joke at the beginning 😂

    Dyscalculia = Number Blind.
    Dyslexia = Word Blind.
    You can have both or just one or the other. 🙂👍
    A good review of Dyslexic friendly character sheets, and thanks for the heads up about that last one. 💖
    Edit) I intend to adapt and make my own character sheet that works for me. 😊👍💖

      Oh, now that you mention it I'd heard the term dyscalculia before but don't know much about it. I have to do some reading on it.
      Would love to see your character sheet if you're interested in sharing once you're done!

      The other leg of the tripod is dysgraphia. Difficulty with writing. My 8 year old son has all three but is getting lots of extra help and he loves playing D&D. He just started playing with a few friends from school and he is loving it. I will definitely consult with him on these sheets and see what he thinks. Great video Dawn! Oh yea, and the heck with that guy and his website. Dyslexia is not a joke.

      @@faerae666 Agreed. It ain't no joke.
      I only started receiving some help at college/University for my Dyslexia.
      I finally re did my English as an adult. I also worked hard to advocate for my daughter. I was not going to let her struggle like I did in school.
      I'm Dyslexic and Dyscalculiac, among my other difficulties.
      Also I forgot how to spell that one you mentioned at the time so I decided to leave it till today to mention. You beat me too it. 😁💖 Thank you. 💖👍💖💐
      There is also Dyspraxia.
      And there is also Auditory Processing Disorder. I struggle with that as well.

      @@faerae666 I have both dyslexia and dysgraphia so I can relate.
      For me having my abilities prewritten on the sheet as well as having larger fill able text boxes help a lot.

    This is an excellent video that I really enjoyed. I have, or had, dyslexia. I used to have real trouble reading and writing. (I used mix up my b & d and m & w regularly.) Whilst I appeared to have grown out of the reading and writing issues I still have trouble with numbers; specifically reading out telephone numbers; I am ok with the actual math. These sheets look like an awesome aid for those having the perceptual problems I remember. I especially like the colour coded stats and skills. These creators (apart from the last one) have put a lot of thought and effort into their work and deserve recognition. Thank you for sharing.

    I recently started using better fonts (I was told Century Gothic is a good one too) when putting stuff together. And its easy enough as a lay out artists or designer to do. A simple change can accommodate a host of people, who frankly make up a sizable group of gamers. I may even add this class to the panels I am putting together for Multiversecon.

    Just to wonder, if I want to design like a "dyslexic friendly" character sheet for my favorite game (VtM 5th Edition) reasonable approaches would be:
    ) Use a dyslexic friendly font.
    ) Try to make it bigger than "normal"
    ) Try to use icons to assist with understanding
    Would it be a good idea, to maybe try to move stuff to different pages? Increasing the page count, but making it more readable.
    Or would that feel like just "to spread out"?

    • @Roll4Initiative
      @Roll4Initiative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For me personally I think dyslexic friendly font and icons that assist is most helpful. As far as larger text, that doesn’t make a big difference for me and just increases the amount of pages. If your going to change layout do it in a way that makes it feel intuitive, putting relevant or like things together. Like grouping attributes and skills together or having a section that has all the info you’d need for combat.

      I could always use a little bit more space to write on my sheets(bigger fallible text boxes).
      I play VTM 5e and I would love to try a sheet that is a bit more readable so if you do make one I would very appreciate a link.

    might be worth looking into "menu science" where restaurants design menus based on how the eye naturally flows to different areas of a page

      I recently was chatting with another creator about that idea, they use it to layout their stream overlays and to help pick who goes where

    Dyslexic guy here 🙋‍♂️
    Got my first DND game tomorrow!
    My reading isn't bad it mainly effects my memory maths and processing.
    Will update how it goes!
    Update:
    Actually really easy.. I had good friends playing with me and a great DM which made it better.
    Doing shots every time someone rolls a 1 or a 20 has left my liver battered though so don't reccomend that! 😅

    • @DadsAnime
      @DadsAnime 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Roll4Initiative I just used an app but for the most part didn't really feel like I needed much extra help.
      I think the main thing I'd suggest to anyone else playing for the first time is just sit next to a good friend who knows about your dyslexia and ask them to help you out then before you know it you'll be fine.

    Great video! I am not dyslexic but I am neurodivergent, and I have been using the third sheet you showed (your fave) for a couple of months. I find it easy to use and I'm able to quickly find what I need. The symbols make things SO much easier. What do you think the flame symbol at the top of the sheet could be used for?

    • @Roll4Initiative
      @Roll4Initiative  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My thoughts is that's for tracking class resources like Warlock spell slots or Monk Ki points.

    • @AxelleNobody
      @AxelleNobody 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The flame symbol is pretty much whatever you neeed it for. When designing it me and my DM wanted them to also be homebrew game friendly so for example my DM uses gadget points for one of his charaters

    I had no idea that Dyslexic's Character sheets were designed for dyslexics. I've been using them for years though.
    I'm not dyslexic though. I just find them to be good sheets.
    He is looking for helpers to complete the sheets.

      In the video I do talk about the fact that I contacted the creator of that site and he did not create them for people with dyslexia, it's a name from an old project. Really wish that he'd rename the site to not be misleading.
      They are good class specific character sheets, I will give it that.
