      It would be a Hybrid Crappie. It does happen in the wild. Very rare though in wild. Mostly done in labs and hatcheries.

      It happens a lot more than what some people think, we have them here in silver lake, a lot of them.

      It's tricky in some places. Seems like many different species get more colorful in the colder waters to the North. Usually the vertical striping vs. the more mottled works though, just wish i could always find em like The Machine does lol.

    Great channel. Do crappie get lighter in color in colder weather? Seems like a lot of the other crappie you have caught were a lot darker in color.

    • @1993Savedbygrace
      @1993Savedbygrace 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they do. When the water dips below 50 around here in NC they get so light the spots are hard to see. Once spring comes they darken up and get ready for courtin'.

    • @DrZiggyzoo1
      @DrZiggyzoo1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, many fish lose color in the winter, and their pattern becomes less noticeable. This is because they move to deeper water, and stay there because the water is warmer. The sun is less powerful and less sunlight penetrates the deeper water, which makes them lose color.

    Good video! Adding to the spine count, it's usually 5-6 spines for white crappie and 7-8 for black crappie. Black crappie are generally smaller also.

  • @johnnywolford4519
    @johnnywolford4519 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Black crappies are originally native to the Atlantic coastal USA from new York state to Florida, while the white crappie is originally from the Mississippi river drainage basin and the great lakes from southern Canada to Louisiana.

    Thanks alot for this video Mr. Gene. I've been waiting for that side-by-side comparison since I started following your channel and discovered there are black crappies. I think crappie are some of the better frying fish. Could you tell a taste difference between the two? Like dark chicken meat vs. white meat?
