@ But it will cost Johnny his shop if he does it. Tyler on the other hand can do what he wants, if he is willing to turn a wrench. BUT he has now put out a video showing his dilemma, so a potential future owner would do best to stay away if this is the route he goes down. Tyler probably knew the problems before hand and knew that the scrap value plus the video revenue would easily cancel out the cost of the cars. Frankly, I would ditch the 330i and fix the 335d myself and sell it for what I paid for it after autocrossing it. And making videos of the autocross sessions.
While it isn't the same car, I took on a project last year which is a 2012 Audi Q7 with the 3.0 V6 TDi motor. It was serviced locally but the turbo failed... long story short, a turbo upgrade and a deletion of all of the stuff that makes them unreliable has made the vehicle a joy to own. I get great fuel economy for the size of the car and quite frankly, its really very capable. I'd probably have Johnny delete it and fix it. Or, sell it for someone else to revive. :)
I'm so glad he's going back to some cars us regular folks can actually afford. Would love more of these kind of cars. I mean you could do a whole series of cars under 10k and I'd watch every episode.
A 100K miles manual e46 BMW is perfect for a 16 year old kid. You just have to replace some coolant parts, the belts, valve cover gasket and shocks. And you’re golden for 10 years. Cost about $2000 and $600 in parts and learn basic mechanic skill set over TH-cam. The engine and transmission are bullet proof. Learn your way around a wrench. Safe cars and just around 200 hp. It’s the perfect first car for a kid who wants to be independent of relying on unscrupulous mechanics your entire life. Great cars, perfect weight distribution, rear wheel drive and so fun to drive. It’s a car for someone who values independence and learning to do stuff yourself. Maybe the most important skillset in this increasingly disposable and dependent world.
The 330i ZHP might be special for the US market, but Europe actually had a 330i with 258hp instead of the 235 of that ZHP. And the US might have had the 335D just for 3 years, we in Europe got them much longer. Actually, the majority of 3 series in Europe are diesels.😂 That DEF tank is between 250 and 400 dollar on Ebay. The heater costs new 289 at Dave's superstore. That's under 700 bucks for the diesel emission shit instead of 5000, if you put in a bit work yourself.
great to see some real hoopties back on the channel, hope this video does well so we can get more content like it! also, the cars at the BJ auction are insane!
My friend had an independent BMW shop. His customers would buy new BMW’s and drive to his shop to replace the water pumps with the guaranteed to fail BMW Plastic Blades attached to the metal rotating shaft. He would install after market pumps will all metal parts and no failures, no overheating, and no injured motors for the next decade or so.
In the EU people delete all that emission stuff on the old BMW 3 series diesel cars...after that they are very good cars, you see them everywhere here. My buddy had a 320d with EGR delete,DPF delete, intake manifold flap cancellation plugs etc..there are kits online and you can do everything at home. After that, install new software and a carbon clean and you'll have a good car
The US government has made a large example out of several people doing this especially those on the Internet. There is hefty fines and possible jail time for doing it here in the states
@@ziggi4800 For many of them, that's the last thing they care about 😂...don't worry, they're doing worse things. @ it’s not about the state in this case. If he showed on camera that he removed the emission systems from that car, then there is a fairly good chance of the federal government coming in and making an example out of him like they have done so many other TH-camrs.
Rust is a bad deal if it is in the wrong places, but the dashboard stuff is not that much of an issue. You need to either study the shit yourself and get your hands dirty, or find an "alternative" mechanic who can do some work for you. By alternative I mean one willing to not play by the book. After that, get on the forums and get shopping for the delete modules and alternative ways to fixing things. Then have a proper mechanic, or your buddy, or install the stuff yourself. With not much luck you have yourself a far better car than it was when it left the factory, often with more power, and some additional features that it never had originally. If you feel up to going deeper down the "custom hole" you can make it have fun features and be completely impossible to steal etc. The only downside potentially is that it will be hard to sell and get some sort of decent price for, but that holds true for anything you've modified enough to make noticeably different from stock. The right buyer will pay a premium for it if the work is done properly, but they know it's a buyers market most of the time. Friend of mine had a 330i that was halfway the millenium falcon, it was a bit - ehm - well, lets say it didn't run without knowing exactly how to set it up which at times required a laptop on the passenger seat plugged into the ECU but the tradeoff was GOBS of power and very customizable ride. He had a sort of "limp mode" that tamed the car down so his girlfriend could drive it, and then a bunch of modes where it was set up differently, one for drift, one for track, and even one for minimum gas consumption that made it really economical for long travel heh. But in a classical sense it had no resale value whatsoever, it was too customized for that, and he had to have it inspected at a 'friendly' shop so to say, he'd chuck it into a custom map to pass emissions etc but it drove like ass with that active.
Bought a 2002 330xi almost ten years ago. Has been bulletproof. One of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. Only problems were the window regulators and the ignition coils. Fast, great handling, perfect in the snow.
I loved my 2011 335d! Unfortunately I lost it to an accident…. That car was extremely impressive! I purchased a 2011 335i to replace the d after the accident. I still own the 335i. It’s a great car but I miss the torque of the diesel! It’s unfortunate that BMW discontinued the diesel 335 after the E90. What a ride!
My dad bought a rough 2010 3 series in 2018 with a 100k, some front end damage, a whole mess of check engine lights, for about $800. He used it for 5-6 years as a grocery getter and taking trips to the garden. Worked great for that use until it finally died and he had it towed away.
It feels not just like emissions and electronics; it seems more like car manufacturers price gouging on spare parts as it reduces the second hand market.
Cheap 3 series are the sauce. Too bad that ZHP is so rotten otherwise be worth saving. FYI you can get any M54B30, just have to swap the cams and boom it’s a ZHP motor.
I got a "FreeMW" E46 for a work trade and it needed basically every maintenance item, in addition to a paint job for the 2nd time. Fortunately I am doing it all myself.
I had a 2013 BMW X5 diesel and it was one of the best suvs I have ever owned. I sold it before the warranty went up but damn I wish they still made the diesel midsize suvs.
The Deisel was also sold in Canada. But I don't understand what's so special about any of these cars other than that they were terribly neglected and ignored as well as driven into the ground.
Why do people buy high end German cars, I have been a car junkie my whole life and have warned everyone that repair costs are extreme and plentyful but they sit in that beautiful interior and listen to the salesman which is often a mistake for many products. I have a sister that fell in love with an Audi and I was able to get her to lease it so now when it spends a quarter of the time at dealer being fixed she doesn't get the bill. I get it the car is a dream when it is running well but what an unreliable lump those things are. Most cars are less reliable today all German cars and any other high end cars are very expensive to fix and resale price is very low on all high end cars.
Well, good on you for taking a car that it may have been within someone's reach to fix themselves and have a good running BMW... and throwing it in the junkyard. Where I live, lesser cars than that are selling for that much, only their bodies are COMPLETELY rusted out. Like literal cheese... I had one of those 335d. It needed fuel injectors replacement at 6 years and 40k miles. The dealer quoted me$8.5k. Told them no way. Traded it in on an Outback that weekend.
You should have brought it to a mechanic that knew diesels. The only time injectors go is when the rain trays leak on #5 and #6( and that's on the e70s).. injectors on the M57 aren't a maintenance item lol
That's Sad. I'd love to see the Diesel he serviced maybe with rebuilt or reconditioned parts. Crazy that emission stuff isnt rebuildable. It's got to be..
I'd dump that 46s engine, 330s are faily common and you can get a healthy motor with a whole car for less than repairing the current one which will also potentially give you some good parts for the rest of its issues, of course if you found an AC Schnitzer youd be laughing as that came with a Supercharger that could put smoke up the M3s backside. Diesel I'd just fix enough to make it livable, itd make a fine comfortable errand car and save the rest of the fleet being abused doing mundane things whilst still having a bit of poke to not be boring.
I hope you don't / Didn't scrap the E46 ZHP already. Heck I'd probably be interested just for the manual parts as I'm starting a build on an E46 sedan that I want to manual swap.
only the intake camshaft on the ZHP is different. Yes, you can get a standart 3.0 even from an X5 e53, e39, or that same e46, and replace the engine, while replacing that ZHP intake camshaft. But I'm guessing good ole Jonny there will ask like 2000 bucks in labor to swap the engine and replace the camshaft. 2800$ in labor for a headgasket on an e46 is insaaaane. And once again, yes the engine is a standart 3.0, only the intake camshaft is different, also the same head is exactly the same across all 84mm bore BMW M52tu and M54 (2.5, 2.8, 3.0) engines.
BMWs never age well. It's possible to attain 300k-500k kilometers, but it requires constant expenses that nobody seems to want to spend. Wizard is right in saying just buy the cheapest one and drive it until it dies.
