  • Ever feel like there's an international team of bad guys changing all of the easily remembered chemical names and turning them into test-failing, number-infused, pain-in-the-neck names? Well... you're not wrong. IUPAC exists, but try to keep in mind that they're doing it for the greater good. In this episode, Hank talks about IUPAC, prefixes, suffixes, ranking, numbers for carbon chains, and cis or trans double bonds.

    I think so many students find these videos, and similar youtube videos so helpful is because you have already learnt this in class. Hearing it for the first time is always so much more confusing, but having it solidified in a different format and with a different perspective makes all the difference.
    This is mainly because I'm trying to study chemistry on my own (screw you GAMSAT), and watching CrashCourse when trying to learn a new topic for the first time, I find I actually learn very little.
    So, whilst CrashCourse is a great resource to catch your interest in the sciences, or as a quick refresher for students, it is pretty bad for people learning it the first time. So if you're having a lot of trouble learning, its not you. Keep studying, and it'll make sense soon enough :)

    • @chocozeus920
      @chocozeus920 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      That's right; I don't agree with the people that say they learned much more from a 15-minute video than a 3-hour lecture. It's simply that the first time it's all foreign concepts heard for the first time.

    I've found something similar to the topic you spoke about at 1:40-2:05. In 1668, John Wilkins tried to create a language in which each word represented the thing itself. For instance, Zi identifies the Genus of “beasts” (mammals); Zit gives the Difference of “rapacious beasts of the dog kind”; Zitα gives the Species of dogs. (Sometimes the first letter indicates a supercategory- e.g. Z always indicates an animal.)

    Thank you IUPAC! Need more of these systems, or naming conventions ideologies, being used in more fields/subjects.
    Time is better spent learning and understanding the material in depth. Which, in my view, is a big chunk of what good nomenclature enables. Rather than being forced to stroke some (often) dead persons ego. Be tested on their life's woes, and why 'X' is named after them, or why they got to chose what to call 'X'. Leave that kind of 'trivia' for the more fanatical people. Or perhaps history classes ;)

    Personally, I hate the 'common names' cause they don't serve any purpose anymore
    I mean I am never allowed to experiment with the compound in its natural state so why do I have to learn the common name which has no use to me?!
    And neither is there any other information that I can get from it.
    So why cant we just get rid of it...! I know its impossible, but at least in school level we can keep it to a minimum
    The IUPAC is sooo much superior as for many reason Hank mentioned

    • @georgebateman3876
      @georgebateman3876 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrHSX What country's system are you on? Here in the UK, we exclusively use IUPAC names in school (at least on my course) at the 16-18 level.

    • @MrHSX
      @MrHSX 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in India
      In the ICSE board (which is considered an 'international' education board)...
      And damn you're lucky...

    • @georgebateman3876
      @georgebateman3876 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrHSX Well, I have heard that the old names still haven't been replaced in industry, so you might find that you have an advantage if you become an industrial chemist. Otherwise, yeah. Not much fun.
      They make a real effort to be standards-compliant in UK chemistry courses. The old British spelling "sulphur" is out, and we're told to use the more international "sulfur", for example. I don't mind but it takes a while for the teachers to adapt.

    • @MrHSX
      @MrHSX 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      George Bateman Yeah, true dat... Fortunately or Unfortunately, not gonna dive much deeper into the Chemistry field...
      Lol, that just makes us more confused, to follow British (which we do usually do) or to adopt the growthing US standards...
      But yeah, I guess it's great for everyone at the end of the day to speak the same language world wide...

    • @xboxboy93941
      @xboxboy93941 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrHSX The reason we still use common names is for the same reason why people call reactions in which electrons are taken away "oxidations" or how one coulumb is not equal to the charge of one electron: scientists in the past started doing things one way, and when they realized there was an easier way to do things, they more or less just kept doing what they were doing. Old habits die hard, you know? It's easier to just create a new system than to overhaul an existing one. Plus, common names are useful in some classes of compounds, like diacids. Nobody calls them by their IUPAC names. Everyone uses common names for those. Just remember, mother makes Oh My Such Good Apple Pie, Sweet As Sugar.

    Want to lose weight? Say the IUPAC name of table sugar before consuming it.
    (2R,3R,4S,5S,6R)-2-[(2S,3S,4S,5R)-3,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxane-3,4,5-triol
    Don't ask me why TH-cam decided to put a line through parts of the name.
