    This vid proves again it is not the plane that matters, but the pilot who flies it. But in real life, P-38 pilots knew never to fight a turning battle with any plane which was equal or better in performance than theirs. Zoom and boom tactics were used frequently, especially in the Pacific. I am certain however, there will have been occasions where Bf-110 and Me-410 pilots won duels from P-38 pilots in the Western European skies. Well done! You master the plane quite well... And the choice of music... whaw! A real thriller!

      In real life? I have never seen any indication 410 pilots ever fought Lightnings. I mean it may have happened once or twice but 410 had a very short career as a day interceptor. It was not survivable vs. allied escorts. It mostly went to night fighter units after a couple of severe maulings by Mustangs and Thunderbolts. Against P38 I can't see it doing well as it was designed to attack bombers and flew like a brick.

    At the risk of sounding naive, I would like to know why the Me - 410 mounted her gunsight ABOVE the pilot's eye - level and not in line with the windscreen, as was conventional in those days.
    This placement accords a good view directly forwards of the cockpit, but introduces what appears to be an unfavourable "trade - off" by really obstructing the view upwards and to the right of the aircraft.
    Secondly, apparently, the buzzer was an aid for aiming forwards and for firing the nose canons/m.g.s at the target at the right moment, to bag a "Kill". Then why does it go off in the early stages of the video and not under very similar ones thereafter?
    Is it because of "parallax" issues?
    But a truly educative and exciting video, which reaffirms one's faith in Herr Willi Messerschmitt's "stalwart" creations and designs, after the brief "escapade" with the Me - 210!

      I keep forgetting to reply to this comment sorry. The placement of the gunsight might be a bit deceptive based on the video because I fly in virtual reality which is technically two seperate eyes rendered as one.
      When I record this I select one eye only so it alters the perspective a bit.
      In terms of the buzzer I'm not sure why it does this early on it could be a bug in the flight model. I actually find it distracting rather than an aid.

    did the p-38 ever shoot at the ME 410? Also the P-38 was a lot faster and could just fly away. ANd could fly much higher also. But this is a game and one can make a game produce most anything you want.

    • @BlueMax109
      @BlueMax109 ปีที่แล้ว

      An overly simplistic analysis at best and not cogent with actual reality. Hauptman Eduard Tratt shot down 5 P38's in his Me 410 - making him an ace by the allies own yardstick of measurement with just that aircraft type alone. In addition to the other 45 allied aircraft he downed with his Me 410.

  • @janmale7767
    @janmale7767 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 38 was a tad faster than the 410 or 110 (more so on the 110) , but all out top speed is not the b all and end all , once an engagement starts,it help if you decide to disengage and make a run for it or extend out to come back and reengage, or if you are chasing a slower apponent who insists on running away. Fighters set up for speed usually came at the cost of manuverability, like the generally fast p-51 with its laminar flow wing to optimise range and speed, but then tended to have some stalling issues during manuevering at slower speeds.it is all a trade off and depended on what the intended mission of the design was.

    • @charlesc.9012
      @charlesc.9012 ปีที่แล้ว

      The p-38 was not great in Europe. At combat altitudes above the western front, the lightning lost control above mach 0.71 according to Eric Winkle Brown, where German fighters were able to make it to mach 0.76, so the lightning could not dive away. The Hornisse also had DB 600 series engines, so it was not easy to out-accelerate it either.

    Seems unlikely to have happened in reality. 410s were great bomber killers but had to be escorted by 109s and 190s when facing Allied fighters. P-38 was 50 mph faster than 410.

    • @BlueMax109
      @BlueMax109 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Incorrect. Hauptmann Eduard Tratt the highest scoring Zerstorer ace of the war was credited with shooting down 5 P38 lightnings.

    What year did the Germans install this conveniently beeping stall warning system in the Me 410 again? 😂
    On a positive note though this simulation at least appears to have the leading edge slats modelled, unlike most others.

    • @BlueMax109
      @BlueMax109 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the contact altimeter. Not a stall warning. It buzzes at the altitude the pilot has set for the correct drop altitude for dive bombing. One of the many innovations for the hornisse. Look it up.

  • @flycatchful
    @flycatchful ปีที่แล้ว

    Watching the video I got the impression that the 410 was outnumbered. Logic would dictate that the American would go on the offence. They failed to do so and that makes this video bogus.

    • @BlueMax109
      @BlueMax109 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are incorrect. The scenario was 4 vs 4. Even altitude. 2000m distance between both sets of aircraft on a direct collision course.
      The only thing "bogus" about this is you rarely if ever meet at the same altitude going the same speed heading opposite directions in real life.
