    Those Ubiquiti APs are designed to be ceiling-mounted, their beam pattern is specifically wide and (comparatively) shallow to cover the largest distance. With it on the wall, you're pointing half your coverage up, and you won't get any coverage at all behind the unit.

    As a person that installed networks for a living and pulling cables. When pulling cables through a small opening or hole. You want plenty of room for the cables.As the hole fills up making the space to pull a cable smaller. You can burn through the cables with the friction of the cable your pulling, either burning through the whole cable or just exposing the wires inside the insulating outer cover. Just one exposed wire will cause it to fail. Then you have trace down the failure. You have to many cables in the already existing hole. Looks like you have 8 cables in a 1 inch hole. Six would be the max I would have ran in that hole. Also, do NOT pull the cables tight like they are at 6:25 in the video. That's not good at all, the thin wires inside can break over time. You want some slack or service loop. Your setting your network cables up to fail over time. The slack also allows you to re-terminate the cable at the jack, if you have to without running a new cable. Yes jacks go bad. Cables should be able to be pulled without much force. Use push-pull rods in walls when running cable. Fish tapes can bend and loop back up the wall cavity, due to insulation. NEVER pull the cables tight!!! When you are terminating the cables, you don't want to untwist the wires any more than needed to terminate. The twist in the wires is what gives you those speeds. Untwisting them that far from the jack 12:29 can degrade the speed. Sorry but I have to give this a fail. If I seen that job, I would make them redo it all and do it right.

    Nice video and some good tips. When looking at your rack I can see that you're wiring a bunch of the drops directly into the 8 ports on the UDM however its worth noting that those are all on a shared 1Gbps backplane so you'd be better wiring them into your other switch and then using the 10Gbe uplink to the UDM :-)

    Wow, I wish I had all that space in my attic. I drilled 3 holes to run all my cables up the wall to my server closet. I had to run all my cables under my house. All my drilled holes I filled with with a little expanding foam to fully plug the drilled holes closed. If only to keep any bugs from climbing up into the walls of my house.
    I also say cable is chea-. Better to run a bunch of cables to each room at have a few extra ports at least for extra devices down the road. You also don’t need full boxes. You can use just the rings around the drywall, called low power boxes. The extra slack can easily be pushed back into the wall.

    • @Ufphen
      @Ufphen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you can daisy chain connections like that with switches in each room, but all the rooms will be sharing that one cables bandwidth, so if their is no bandwidth restraint you could. However you are going to be doing the same amount of work running the lines and spending more putting switches in every room, so there isnt a good reason to do this, but it is possible.

    For reference the a and b standard are just the two ends of a crossover cable. wires 1 and 3 swap places and the same with 2 and 6. This is the change of RX and TX for both NICs. So OW wire is the transmit (-) on one side and will be the receive (-) on the other side. so if you follow, the orange and green pairs are actually the only pairs that transceive data, at least in anything below cat 7 cable. The blue and brown pairs are reserved for other technologies like POTS lines, POE, or technically another data connection, although that's pretty sketchy. You only ever make the crossover cable if you are plugging a computer directly to a router/modem or another computer, switches do this transmit receive flip internally. Although most computers today with fix the transmit receive in software if you are using the wrong cables with a pretty good success rate.

    You said that was cat6 cable right, not cat 6a, how many runs fit in a single hole and do you know how much bigger 6a is than the 6 you used? I've been thinking of trying to wire my house and figured I'd do 6 wires per plate in each spot then I can change the functionality by moving patch cables in the comm closet.

    • @SPXLabs
      @SPXLabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes cat6. I’m not sure how many fit, never thought to count. Cat6a may be thicker but I don’t think it’s big enough to make any real or noticeable difference unless you are engineering something to be built to the micron specification.
      I’d say if you are going to go through the effort of wiring, you may as well run the extra cable. Just because it’s ran doesn’t mean you have to use it. So your wall plates can have more or less ports depending on how you feel.

    • @jbdragon3295
      @jbdragon3295 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cat 6a is the same size. It does has a plastic x piece in the middle to better separate the 4 pairs of wires. The issue with 6 keystone plates is getting 6 keystones into it. You need to get ones small enough!!! You can also use a double box and spread out keystones that way. I agree with having more keystones in each area than needed. Because trust me, you’ll end up needing them and don’t want to go back and add more if you don’t have to.
