Wrong! Not to sound sexist, but I think that is a female point of view to think that men are afraid to marry. On the contrary, when finding the right partner, men do take the initiative. The worst fear for the men is to make a mistake with their life partner. If you think I am wrong then imagine what if Suleyman never chose Hurrem as his life partner, the whole Ottoman Empire's destiny was illmade by that wrong choice.

Mustafa finds himself facing a similar situation as his father. How the tide changes & still his mother wants to control him, just like Suleman's Vaide tried with him.
Vicious cycles constantly repeating. Mahidervan best be careful or she will end up being the enemy of her son! Then wind up like Suleman's Mother.

Thing is, Mahidevran is *right* in this scenario. It's Mustafa who made a rash mistake with bringing the girl to his harem to please his infatuation and now risks making another rash mistake which could cost him his father's trust.

@@plams4488 I was thinking that too when Mahidevran stated that a concubine shouldn't be able to leave without her consent. As she's meant to be the manger of the harem while Mustafa deals with state affairs, she's right! Besides, given what she went through, I'm not surprised she wants to circumvent the rise of another Hurrem like figure. The harem was specifically designed to keep free women with rights and families that could influence the sultan (or prince, in this case).

I'm not sure where you learned this because it's actually understandable for the show to come up with their own concepts for the members of Mustafa's harem since we have *no idea* who the names of his concubines were. Literally all we know is that one woman was of Crimean origin and later married off to a Pasha.

@@simantinisinha6604 Just looked it up now and there isn't any source listed on the page for the names of these women. Based on that, along with how many of the names match to geni, a fictionilzed family tree website, I'm going to wager that these names are all entirely made up just like the women in this show. (There's even a listing of one being "very influental over him" without any further explanation on how this is known.)

As Wikipedia can be edited frequently by others, it looks like someone tacked on fan creations (either on purpose or unknowingly). This is seen on Suleiman's page too where "Felani Hatun" is added; a woman who never existed outside of the geni website where people added her as part of their fictionalized family tree for the Ottomans.

Ottoman tradition prohibitted any kind of marriages between male royalties and free women. The last royal marriage happened between Sultan Selim and Ayse Hatun, the daughter of Menli Giray, Crimean Khan. After that, the Sultans and the Princes / Sehzade found mates from slave women / Cariye.
Marriages in Islam were held if both part had similar status, free men and free women. By doing marriage, it is no doubt that your in-laws / your partner's family and extended families will take parts of your family life. Mustafa was a Sehzade, and legally marrying Helena would bring nepotism, which means Helena's family and extended family would take advantage because they would be related to Mustafa and Mustafa & Helena's children.
That's why Ottoman tradition prohibitted male royal members of the dinasty to conduct marriage. It was much safer for Sultans and Sehzades to took female slaves to be their partners. Since these females were slaves, they were separated from their families and expected to be loyal to Sultans or Sehzades as their masters and partners. The children that were born from this male master- female slaves union were considered as the legal children of the master, and the female slaves that had children from their masters cannot be sold, and once their masters died, they eventually became free women.
