    Funny thing is, his story is a lot like my neighbor's son's.
    My dad had a badass 1989 Yota pickup that he lifted and had dual shocks (This was oldschool before resevoirs and kings were popular) and put huge BFG all terrains on and my neighbor was about 8 years old and saw it and was in complete awe of it. My neighbor who was much older than me, i remember growing up seeing sparks fly out of his garage when he was a teen/young adult and he was always chopping up toyota pickups making his own prerunners in his garage, he had pipe bending tools and a mig welder i remember and he went through about 3 oldschool toyota pickups (they were dirt cheap back then, you could find them literally anywhere) and built some really badass prerunners..
    But it was my dad's white 1989 extra cab that started his love of toyota trucks. the dude now sells real-estate and does very well for himself. Growing up i always loved going camping and to the desert in my dad's truck. These trucks shaped my future and my love of mechanics. I think if my dad could've built one like this he would've. and i think any off road enthusiast back in 81' would've loved to do this to their trekker. Which is why i support this build and i do not care about toyota purism. This is the spirit of what made oldschool toyota's so fun. They were a dime a dozen but so damn sturdy with their boxed frames and reliable motors. they weren't meant to be collectors pieces locked away in the garage.. They are vehicles begging for usage and suspension upgrades and modifications to really test their limits with.. I just wish they re released the light pickup like this in a modern format.

    One of the best so far! You skipped over the trap door/smuggler box on the passenger side floor board. I’m curious what’s under there? Killer build!

    I'm 61 years old & I think that truck is Amazing! I remember back in the 80s (I graduated from HS in 1980 lol) & fell in love with the little Toyota pickups but have never been lucky enough to own one. Thank you for sharing this really nice build & for bringing back the memories of a great time in my life.

    Kinda made me cringe at first cause the Trekkers are so rare (same with the Wolverines) but that's a SICK build (woulda been better with a 1 or 2UZ engine).... MTR's are absolute garbage though dude, get some BFG's and throw the GY trash in the bin where it belongs.

  • @Nickwillfixit
    @Nickwillfixit ปีที่แล้ว +1

    YEP, I could maybe get away with running this in the UK, the look is spot on, the cab cage is the dogs, as with such a small cab area to get the cage as tight to the body as is possible he nailed it I am also 6'2"so appreciate the work to fit comfortable in.
    I had a step side for many years built to play in quarries, until it just rotted out so much and no time or funds to do a full rebuild it was scrapped regretted it then and still do.
    You did an section on Radio Control boys who was it and where do I get in touch to send some pics of my 5th scale gas fleet of eight plus a couple of smaller scale electric trucks. Keep these uploads coming they are great.

    Why would you cut up a trekker just to build a prerunner? They are very hard to find. It's not even a very good platform for a prerunner. You cut out 95% of the truck. May as well just start with a tube chassis.

  • @roberttaylor7451
    @roberttaylor7451 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a Toyota purest but I ain’t mad. 95% of Toyota fans have figured out that there the best but few are dedicated enough to read and research the history. The origin story is a very unusual, especially for Toyota. It was the brainchild of a salesman in a dealership if I am not mistaken. Even if you restored it to factory spit shin I don’t believe it would be half the value of a 1st year 4Runner. Look up a Toyota stout, even less people know that name and if you find one they aren’t crazy money. If this truck was perfect it’s a bit of a shame but I doubt it was and putting a pile of money in a resto would not pay dividends. It’s only rare if people are aware of it and want it. I have also read of a guy doing a resto and lots of trim at the point where Toyota and Winnebago met were near impossible to replace as no one was 100% Shure who made what and it wouldn’t matter because the molds would be long gone anyway, also can you explain the gate valve in the shocks? I am familiar with flutter valves but not a shock guru. I used accutune off road for fox shocks with my weight and driving style in mind. Suspension is, at least for me something I thought I knew a fair amount about. My current 4Runner is built to be my last one with ne expenses spared. When you get into high end suspension and your going to spend 10k including everything else that needs tweaking to work together you realize quickly that you may want to talk to someone with real knowledge. Accutune experience was one of the best buying experiences of my life. Before ordering I had spoken by phone to everyone and had all my questions answered. Most companies promise this after a sale but fall short because they are busy taking your money to the bank. My rig is an off roader that we can very comfortably camp out of. Don’t call it an overland expedition vehicle. I have heard the overland term from badging from Willy’s Overland and from people on Africa trips. In the outdoor recreation space that word and expeditions are overused and from knowing origin still sounds like fluff. I am 49 and I have been off roading and truck camping since before in was cool but I still haven’t been on an expedition to overland. I am in many ways glad this travel type fought on because there hadn’t really been anything truly new or innovative for a while. The current interest over the last 7-8 years have created a massive new industry. I truly believe it will day off on instagram and all this gear will be dirt cheap. If wild camping I will try my best not to be within any distance of a kitted out as mine. My truck is a tool. I take care of my tools. Regardless how much my tool cost it’s still at the end of the day a 2017 4Runner no more no less. Every male I have chatted with wants to talk about nothing but their truck. If that’s you then you’re really missing the point and it’s going to be an expensive lesson. I did this before the fad and will continue. On a trip I am anchored to the truck on and off road for hours, our goal is always a remote and scenic place. I enjoy this with my family and I spent lots of time educating my 8 and ten year old boys about survival, astronomy, animal and plant life, wilderness conservation and low impact camping. The last thing I want is someone coming over that does this for all the wrong reasons and all they want to do is talk about a truck. It’s just a truck. Make no mistake I know there are many people that share my feelings and I always try to help and or answer peoples questions. I worry often for new people getting into this because you can get so remote so fast and 75% of people I have met remotely weren’t capable of surviving without the truck. If it breaks the don’t have spares tools or knowledge to even know what they need. I am yet to run into anyone on trail that knows ar respects right of way for uphill driver. I have picked up tons of traffic after them and so on. I know I sound like a boomer and things may be totally different on your side of the country. It’s a shame in a way because no popularity no gear development but gear development that makes people feel more in a comfort zone equals trashed campsites trashed torn up trails because they don’t know how to keep traction. I am afraid that some land will become a no go for trucks. I know I sound negative and I have met many young people that aren’t like this and will gladly soak up anything from someone experienced. Unfortunately most aren’t like the and they have a button for everything and it knows way better than my 34 years experience. My apologies for getting off subject and writing a novel. I am a100% positive outlook type of person and these are just observations

    I'm one of those Toyota purists. I owned a 1982 Toyota 4x4 back in the 80s. I did not like the Trekker conversions or the over-the-Top monster truck conversions by the fabricators of that time period. In my humble opinion the Third generation Toyota trucks were the best they ever made. But I definitely think you topped it! 🛻🏁
