There's something to be said for "being late" getting a device review out. Most if any problems should be taken care of by the time you get it and there's less confusion of what the product can and can not actually do by the time the average consumer would be able to get the device anyway.
There is sadly zero reason for this. Get the RG40V for the gameboy feel, and get the Retroid 5 for anything else. Now you still have about 300 bucks over this. Whats the point?
I forgot about this one, this seems perfect if you are like me and play just NES/SNES/GB/GBC/Advance. My hands keep on getting cramped when playing the smaller ones like the RG35XX/RG35XX SP.
At least I want the only reviewer late to the party on this one! I opted to just get base model and the price doesn’t offend me quite as much haha. I liked the DMG a lot more than expected.
@@87-BeforeCommonEra he said best gameboy, not best high powered android device. the pocket is the best gameboy. and this...isn't even the best handheld emulator, because it has a single thumb stick and costs as much as a ps5. it's a more premium device than analogue pocket (i have multiple) and it's android, so save states for all systems, filters and shaders that far outclass the analogue pocket, dreamcast, gamecube, ps1, ps2 etc so i love my analogue pocket but this isn't comparable
The thumb stick the trackpad and the fingerprint sensor are definitely some things on this device that we’re not necessary and could’ve made the device significantly cheaper if removed
Don't see the market for this. I think most people wanting to play on a DMG form factor will want to play retro games that don't require this hardware. Pick up a Trimui Brick instead for $60.
The main appeal for me would be the OLED screen. But for OLED I can also pay 220 instead for a way more comfortabe RP5... I'd like this product at 200 euros, a Gameboy with OLED is pretty sick
you say that as if they are the same. the only thing they have in common is the form factor. its obvious they are drawn to the design and build quality.
I've been so tempted to get an Ayaneo handheld for a while now but could never justify it. Now that my handheld gaming device collection is pretty huge, I want devices that are more "endgame" and that will last me a long time instead of just marginally upgrading one or two handhelds every few months. So I ended up preordering one of these Pocket DMGs. Got the white one at the base price since it seemed pretty reasonable. I don't think you need anything but the base model for general gaming. I don't think I'd want to do anything like COD or Switch gaming on a device like this (due to both the screen aspect ratio and the lack of 2nd joystick). And the base model is currently $340. So it seems worth it for me. This will be my endgame vertical handheld. Won't feel the need to buy another one. I do kinda wish they dropped the SoC down slightly to make it a *bit* cheaper but I'm excited to get mine soon. This thing looks super pretty and all the reviews have been pretty positive.
I almost got one of these but I already have waaaay too much e-waste in my house from Anbernic's release schedule and haven't been able to find my kids as a result. I mean I know there here somewhere...I can hear the muffled sounds of Warioware and them giggling plus my snacks keep disappearing...
You're the first one I've seen that didn't get the DMG colors. As I suspected, the device gets a lot less interesting without that color scheme, which is why they locked it behind the higher price tier lol
I LOVE AyaNeo's designs, and that's definitely what you're paying extra for. You can easily find similar functionality for less money, but if you want your tech to work well and look good, they do a decent job of combining the two...just be ready to pay for it.
with a large android based emulator, at that point I think I'd be better served buying a controller for my phone and carrying that around - if you have a nice phone, it probably would outperform this. I love my 35XXH because it's VERY small, very portable, and very small. Works great for retro stuff.
I bought the 16gb white just because I like it. I love vertical handhelds more than horizontal because it feels better to me and the design and power of this one is simply the best. Probably an overkill but surely it will not give any perfomance problems so it's a good all in one for me. I have some AYANEO, a Steamdeck and other horizontal handhelds and I just hate them, as the Switch. I simply can't enjoy that screen setup and it feels weird to me to have hands so far from each others with the screen in the middle.
I’d be thrilled if someone else bought me one, but there’s just too many compromises for me to want to spend my own money on one. On an Android device with that much power I want to be able to play Android games, but I don’t want to play them on that screen. If I’m using that power to emulate PS2, i want the two analog sticks.
The price is insane, but to be fair, the stats are pretty stacked, and the interface is better than just using a phone. Just not a great device if you're only playing retro games anyway, however.
I think the thought process behind the screen refreshing left to right is that in many retro 2d games, your character moves across the screen left and right.
If you ever put all your ads into one compilation video I’d actually watch it. 😂 Also, I emulate ps1 on my Steam Deck. And it also requires bios I’m pretty sure. Like ps2.
Not to totally dismiss your concerns about the shoulder buttons, Wulff, because they very well could be defective, but if the goal of including extra shoulder was directly related to such a defect, you would think they would include shoulder buttons that were the same color as the default ones, so that you can utilize the original color scheme if you so chose. I agree that I think that it should have been a much weaker, much cheaper device. With the control scheme let it cap at N64/Dreamcast/PSP, you know...single joystick systems (I know PSP would be bad for the screen). With that premium look and feel at a cheaper price I think it would have sold really well.
I like vertical gameboy style devices, but this one really doesn't speak to me. And then there's the price. Really, I'm pretty happy just using a cheap phone. The screen is even better, and I can clip on my favorite controller so it's actually comfortable. And with everything included, it's like a third of the price. Not quite as powerful though.
why would ''getting really bright'' be a tell that it is OLED when the largest weakness of OLED's typically is lower brightness... i mean, you obviously looked at the specs, but assuming you didnt, did the black levels and contrast not give it away?
There is absolutely no freaking way it was impossible to find room for a headphone jack on this device. Absurd that it doesn't have one.
