  • Max Miller - 40 minutes BBC Documentary 1989 - I Like the Girls Who Do - written and presented by Gerald Scarfe
Thomas Henry Sargent (21 November 1894 -- 7 May 1963), best known by his stage name Max Miller and also known as 'The Cheeky Chappie', was a British front-cloth[1] comedian who was probably the greatest stand-up comedian of his generation.[2] He made films, toured in revues and music hall, and sang and recorded songs, some of which he wrote. He was known for his flamboyant suits, his wicked charm, and his risqué jokes which often got him into trouble with the censors.

Max’s delivery was his fortune and the songs he sung so brilliantly became instantly recognisable. The white and blue book gave the mostly false impression that his act was very naughty when in fact it was the verbal version of the now sadly missed seaside postcards. It was a time of many legendary comedians of which Max will be remembered with great fondness.

One of the greatest stand-ups in the south of England, in his times there were hundreds of theatres and Max could tour for a whole season with the same act but as soon as TV came along he needed new material each time he appeared, it was said that Max was mean with money but it transpired he gave thousands to charity... RIP Max you've earned it..

It happened to many music hall acts who could play first house in one music hall, get a cab to another for second house and, finally, a cab for third house. Apart from the early cinema, that was the only live entertainment there was. Television finished the careers of popular acts. Also, they were getting on in years, having started back in the twenties. Two of the best were Lilly Morris and Gus Elan who sang comedy songs with an exentric dance in between. My great Aunt worked with Max Miller early in his career and I met Max Wall at a party in the seventies. We had a good chat and he was a very nice man. I was very sad to read that he had died due to a fall.

That man, Max Miller, was an absolute comedy genius. He was just that and even now he still is the greatest stand-up comedian that has ever lived. His timing and delivery of comedic lines is beyond compare even in this day and age.

Max miller was the best because he never swore or told any raciest jokes. He didn't have to because he knew what made people laugh. He was one of a kind and I remember hearing my late uncles cassette tapes of max miller. My uncle was a fan of max miller and there will never be another max miller. Not like comedians of today who have to swear and tell raciest jokes.

The audience always waited for him to tell a really blue joke, but he never did. He had great speed of delivery and perfect timing. His successor was Ken Dodd, who was a truly great comedian in the music hall tradition. Ken never swore either. He was risque at times, but never blue.

The nearest comedian to Max Miller I've ever seen was the late great Ken Dodd

Yes. Ken was truly brilliant. I saw him live and in row B of the stalls. His timing and speed of delivery was tremendous, and he was funny all the time.

Anyone got the Benny Green radio documentary about the Hackney Empire ‘lost’ performance? as my old bootleg tape is about kaput. Benny’s narration and scene-setting style would add another dimension to this otherwise great piece. Thank you very much for posting.
