    I know this was uploaded a long time ago now (and that a lot's happened since it was, including the official localization!), but I...really, really enjoy watching this trailer and translation. It gets me pumped up for this game all over again. The effort put in to translate and convey every snatch of text on screen really comes through, and translating Soseki's four-kanji-compounds and posing-bursts as snippets of ABCB-rhyme scheme dashes of poetry is honestly just such a cool decision.

    [There was previously a long discussion here about translating one of Barok's lines and his derogatory use of ニッポン人 as an English anti-Japanese slur as a reflection of the racism present historically and by characters in-game. A while back I removed the slur from the translation, as on reflection it was a poor decision; while it might represent the historical racism in the game (which, to be clear, it condemns), it was the wrong choice to translate using such a loaded word in a context where I couldn't discuss that with the author of the original Japanese text. While there's a time and place to discuss the use of slurs in translation, it's not "anime lawyer game where the translator is unofficially performing the work with no opportunity to discuss with the author."
    I'd also like to be clear changing this was my own decision. I made a bad call, and I sincerely apologize to anyone who that initial word choice hurt or upset.]

      Yes, I think racist , and in DGS2, sexist, wasn't really a problem in localization because their were a thing in 19th century. and the dark tone wouldn''t too considered DD is rated M. So, why Capcom doesn't localized these game already. Is it because Sherlock Holme?

    • @me-up7ur
      @me-up7ur 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Barok is not really a racist(^^) Yes he loathes Japan/Japanese,but that's because of what happened in 1895. He said he was betrayed by his most trusted Japanese friend or something, and couldn't come back as a prosecutor until Ryuunosuke (another Japanese attorney) appeared in London. He has his reason to bash Japan,while most English people just hate or look down on Japanese/oriental people.

      However, in my own opinion, I had issue with SOJ's 2nd and 4th case, not because of the scenario itself, but the fact that they don't contribute to SOJ's main storyline and their existence feels very jarring in the game. It might just simply be the fact that the ace attorney cast is getting so big that trying to give everyone a spotlight in a single game simply become infeasible. Trucy and Athena's cases in SOJ simply felt they should have happened in a different game though. I honestly though the Khura'in setting deserved to have all 5 cases dedicated to it.

      CptNameless It uses characters from one or more (I don't really know the details because I haven't played it) of the 10 Sherlock Holmes stories that are still in copyright by the year they were written.
      I know about this because the Holmes State recently sued the Mr. Holmes movie because of those stories. It almost prevented the it from going to theaters.
      So at least Capcom has to pay the copyright for the stories, if not a big fine (I don't know if they paid anything in Japan, copyright works in weird ways).
      Capcom is still broke.

    • @JMBoote1
      @JMBoote1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Some may be public domain, but other later stories and characters, are still owned by the Conan Doyle Estate. It doesn't help that they're also very protective over anything Sherlock Holmes. Capcom has to pay an unknown amount, on top of the usual costs of localisation, if they want DGS brought over. It's a hard decision, which is why unlike AAI2, it hasn't been confirmed to be not happening. It's not laziness at all.

Baron von Zerk once known Asougi (Nuruhodo's friend) and I think Asougi had a dark secret like having guilty man walk scot-free or having connection to some shady organization (Maybe about the four signature) and Baron knows about that. So, when Naruhodo come to England, Baron heard about a Japanese attorney with the "Karuma Sword" came to defend a case, he decided to came back to prosecuted that case after being disappear for 5 years.

    • @benmorax

      LeChoixDuResident il faudra juste blâmer la non ouverture d'esprit (que j'appellerai le mouvement de l'Occident centriste) qu'il y a eu à la sortie du premier ace attorney qui de base se déroulait au Japon.
      La localisation de la saga a rendu le jeu impossible à sortir. Et la suite de la saga semble être en péril, on est en train de forcer les écrivains à mondialiser leurs scénarios pour garder la cohérence de leur première erreur.

    • @ChloHB
      @ChloHB 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benmorax Je ne suis pas tout à fait d'accord. Oh, je pense aussi qu'ils auraient du garder l'action des jeux au Japon et garder les noms japonais, ça aurait tellement plus de sens par rapport aux nombreuses et claires références à la culture japonaise (plutôt que de dire que c'est une "Californie Alternative avec plus d'héritage japonais"), mais ce n'est pas la raison pour laquelle Capcom ne peut pas localiser DGS.
      Déjà, le Los Angeles où se passe toute l'histoire de la série est un LA où beaucoup de migrants japonais se sont installés (www.siliconera.com/ace-attorney-takes-place-alternate-los-angeles-capcom-explains/ je ne plaisante pas ça fait vraiment partie de l'histoire de AA) donc la localisation n' aurait qu'à dire que Ryuunosuke est l'ancêtre japonais de Phoenix (une ligne dans le synopsis suffit largement). Les gens comprendront bien le reste. Donc le fait que le protagoniste soit très clairement japonais dans DGS n'est en aucun cas une excuse pour ne pas le localiser.
      La vraie raison pour laquelle Capcom ne l'a toujours pas localisé est beaucoup plus bête : à cause des droits d'auteur pour les histoires de Sherlock Holmes. Ce jeu n'est pas censé être une adaptation des nouvelles de Conan Doyle mais il fait (et DGS2 aussi) pas mal référence à ses histoires, assez pour que Capcom soit contraint de payer des droits d'auteur s'ils voulaient l'exporter en Occident.

    A big worry I have for the localisation of Dai Gyakuten Saiban 1 + 2 is that they will change the names of the characters. I don't worry about Sherlock Holmes being changed to Herlock Sholmes.. but there are reasons for and against this. One reason for is simply that a lot of westeners find Japanese names more confusing and difficult to remember. I remember when I first started getting into anime I found it really difficult to remember a lot of the names because I just had simply never heard anything like them before. It really only gets easier after years and years of watching anime or being exposed to Japanese names/words, etc. However, a reason against this is that it's undeniable, unlike in the original trilogy, that the beginning takes place in Japan, and that our protagonists are Japanese. Therefore, they must also have Japanese names. Even though it may be difficult for Japanese people to remember western names, every English character in the game has an actual English name (albeit, sometimes puns). But the main worry is that I'm simply too attached to Naruhoudo, Susato, and Asougi. I wouldn't know what to do if their names were changed upon the release of the localisation! And I just remembered, it is also important that Naruhoudo's last name be "Wright", as he is the ancestor of Phoenix Wright.
    Also, fun fact, if you didn't know; Asougi's katana, which had been passed down for generations in his family, is called "Karuma". When I played the game, I didn't think anything weird of it, except when he said that a friend of his father's used the name for their family. And since the game likes referencing the predescesors of the protagonists a lot, I assumed this was probably important. Until I found out that 'Karuma' is the last name for Manfred and Franziska von Karma in Japanese. 'Karuma' was localised into 'Karma'! Cool.

    Quick question: why did translate the title as "launch trailer?" The Japanese title of the video is 完成記念映像 which I'm pretty sure means "completion commemoration trailer." And the title of the DGS1 Launch Trailer was 発売記念映像 which does mean "launch commemoration trailer."
    Maybe there are just multiple phrases used for launch trailer in Japanese, and I'm just not aware, but it seems weird to me that they'd release a launch trailer when the game isn't actually out yet. I feel like the title was supposed to signify that this was a trailer made because development for the game has been completed.

    So I'm writing an Ace Attorney (I dunno if it's the Ryūnosuke or the Phoenix series) fanfic with Telltale style gameplay, is that a good idea based on the concept alone?

      Circus case might actually be the World Fair case with the scientist (case 3), since one of the witnesses for that case in a screenshot appears to be some sort of circus ringleader.

      If everything we see here is from Case 3, then that case has a shit ton of characters: the defendant, fat man, balloon kid, witch girl, tall guy, and the guy who looks like Crogley.
      But then if some of the characters are actually case 4 people, when does the flashback case involving Watson everyone's convinced will happen happen? In the middle of case 5? Or will it even be playable at all?

    I'm getting so sick of there being comments on every DGS trailer with people whining about how unfair the entire situation is. If you're just being light-hearted with it, then I don't mind that, but people who are just straight out whining and complaining about how unfair Capcom are being are really pissing me off by this point.
    I mean, I agree that it'd be super lovely if we could actually get a localization, but Capcom are releasing Japanese trailers in Japan for the Japanese audience. If you're honestly dependant on feeling like you're owed something that you'd honestly rather that people from another country don't get a sequel to a game they've played that they were promised, even if that means indefinitely, then them being able to at least enjoy it while praying it gets localized one day, then you're just really selfish.
    People would have a right to complain and think it's scummy if Capcom were flaunting the trailers around on their western social media accounts despite us not getting it, but you're all purposefully seeking out the damn Japanese trailers on purpose. You don't have any right to moan about how Capcom are rubbing it in, when the only reason you're having these trailers shoved in your face is because Western fans purposefully grabbed the trailers and subbed them.
    I'm not at all sticking up for Capcom on their handling of DGS's localization; or lack thereof, as a whole. I'm simply saying to use a tad bit of basic common sense. If it really hurts you that much to see these trailers how about just not watching them. If you really think Capcom is scummy for releasing DGS2 despite not yet having localized DGS, try telling that to Shu Takumi who; bless his soul, put so much effort & passion into his DGS project. I've seen him talk about these games, and it's clear that he's really proud of them and that it's a persona passion project of his. Imagination him being told "sorry, you can't make DGS2. We have to wait until DGS is released in the West. Which may never happen."

      James G I joke about how sad I get when I see these trailers, though they're still awesome to watch, but I can't really complain seeing as I'm one single gamer and this is an entire company with things other than just dgs to worry about.
      It It does kinda annoy me that they're so vague about why they can't release the game in the west but there's not a whole lot I can do about that.

      I would prefer a definitive official statement from Capcom rather than the open-ended ones. It's best to hear the bad news straight from the horse's mouth, then deal with it and move on. Is it bad PR to just say "We are not localizing this game"? Instead, we get, "Certain factors are getting in the way..." which reads as "We are trying to localize..." I just would like to know if it is officially off the table, ya know? I know it's late in 3DS' lifespan so the likelihood is scarce however Metroid is coming soon...

    • @sdgdhpmbp

      I'm sick of those comments for a different reason.
      I mean, there's still the route of learning Japanese. As much as I love to act so smug about being able to read on an elementary level (all those Japanese games and animes truly payed off!) and actually looking up kanji instead of translations, I get that it's not a feasible option for some. But it still irritates me to no end, since overall so much material around the world is best enjoyed in its original language, yet a few here feel entitled to translations. Not only that, as a medium meant for entertainment, you'd think that these guys would find time doing something more productive than expecting everything to be wrapped up neatly to them.
      Thank goodness I never had to experience Gyakuten Saiban like most of you did with Ace Attorney (although I must admit I heard of the series only because of localisation). I experienced the actual originals and grew my appreciation to the series from there. I saw the version you got and to be frank, it's the equivalent of old Chinese movies dubbed poorly and hilariously. Yes, the names are punny and the jokes are corny in the originals, but "Frank Sawit"? "Are... You... High!?"? That's a little stupid even for a series with a lie detecting marble.
      My point is there's more to experience for you people clamoring for a translation. As I said, my reading level is elementary, maybe junior high at best, and it's good enough for the entire series. Most of you watch subbed anime anyway and somewhat get the great difference made in dubs. The same is here, just learn the basics and get to playing. I guarantee you'll be able to appreciate the series even a tiny bit more.
