The gutting disasters help us cope with our own disasters. It's inevitable from time to time and if we only see perfection every time we may start to wonder if we are really that bad. Please don't change.

I haven’t paid for locksmith services for other than parts in years.
I had 4 doors and 8 locks to rekey for me. The first lock didn’t go so smooth. By the time I got to number 3, it took me less time to complete the remaining 5 than it did the first 3.

It is a 10 pin cylinder. It is the "old" style interactive keyway. The second chamber has a repetitive pin meaning the second chamber is always pinned "Z" for the external and 0 or 1 for the internal. The second chamber is always the same pinning no matter how the other four chambers rotate.

Do those low cut "gatekeeper" pins even do anything in a lock where you use a pick like that? I'd expect that to make things difficult for a normal pin tumbler design, but how much does that matter when the pick's shaft isn't in line with the pins while picking?

Not sure I understand why picking the outer pins would give a deep false set. If only the outer pin is picked, its halves are still held in place by the inner pin. It's not as if the chamber could shear until the inner pin hits the chamber walls. The inner pin holds the outer one in place.
If the inner pin is spooled, then sure, but that's no different than the outer pin being spooled.
As far as the teardown goes, if you don't know which side the pins are on, slide the core out carefully and look before you push it out far enough to drop the pin. It's not exactly rocket science.
