Shockingly, over a hundred migrant workers were dismissed by their employers after paying exorbitant fees to offshore agents for their accredited employer work visas.
Migrant advocate Anu Kaloti highlights the wide range of sectors affected by this exploitation, including construction, hospitality, and aged care. Workers from countries such as India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South America, and even the Chinese community have been impacted. INZ General Manager Richard Owen expresses deep concern for the exploited migrants and acknowledges the gravity of the situation. Some workers were charged between $14,000 and over $30,000 by agents, only to be dismissed before even commencing their employment.
Currently, INZ is investigating 53 companies and identifies an additional 16 companies at risk of losing their accreditation. The agency aims to audit 15 percent of all accredited employers, having already completed over 430 audits and currently undertaking 1500 checks (as per INZ's email statement). Notably, there are 23,744 accredited employers in New Zealand.
While it is still early in the investigation, Owen mentions the possibility of employers receiving illegal premiums from migrant workers abroad. INZ will scrutinize this matter along with other serious allegations, such as people trafficking. The burden of proof will be crucial in determining whether employers were complicit in these exploitative practices.
