What do you do instead of snap starts? I've seen your 2015 women's division video and you quick start it when it dies but I can't find that start anywhere on TH-cam
I have big issues with Suicide (I hit about 5% of the attempts), I can't do Iron Whip and I learnt horizontal combos before Wrist Mount, so I see your point XD
Black Hops have vexed me for at least 10 years now. And I have missed Skin the Gerbil in every ladder competition I have ever competed. I can hit it most of the time day-to-day, but when it counts I choke.
Hey Ann. I started playing about 4 years ago & I still can not snap start. I can finger spin but I cant bind it and I still struggle a little with side style play. I'm good at front style and 2A.
paolista or horizon? I want a good yoyo that can fingerspin ( though now I know you aren't the best at them😅) but I think I might like the paolista better. what's your personal opinion about both these yoyos?
Hey Ann a tip from Paul Kerbel's finger spin tutorial is to let your finger be "soft". Basically don't stiffen your finger, let the yoyo press against you finger alittle. It's tough to explain until you've done it. Don't worry though I can't do seasick as well.
TheProJustOfficial on the space cadet this is not as important as the yoyo does a great job keeping your finger centered. But yes don't have too stiff of a finger when fingerspinning. I think the issue is mostly keeping the string away from the yoyo
4 years of throwing taught me horizontal, fingerspins, Yuki Spencer combos, intricate tech and so much. But I cannot hit Kamikaze or brent stole... But oddly i can do the crossed arm-gt laceration.
yoyoing is really hard, and you're definitely right about 2A being hard. I'm learning it at the moment and even though I learned how to use my weaker hand pretty quickly, it's still really hard. Also, I can't do snap starts, you're not alone! By the way, you're awesome!
same thing happens when I try finger spins, the string gets wound up around my finger, apparently it's because you need to hold your throw hand further away from the yoyo almost taught with a little slack.
I have been yoyoing for god knows how long now and still can't hit black hops consistently. It's one of my favorite tricks to see and I cannot land the 2 hops back on to save my life. Some days I can't even properly get into the triple or nothing to start it.
I empathize with everything you said. I started on a yomega fireball and for the longest time felt like butterfly yo-yos where a cheat. I still 16 years after i started this hobby am working on kwijibo, doing a seasick where i don't miss and fall out of it and can not snap start to save my life. And i never mastered looping more than three times, it starts great and then goes right to hell.
Hey Ann, so I was wondering if you could do a video on the judging system. I know that the system just recently changed and people in the comments of some freestyles have been in some confusion. Could you explain how the judging system works now? That would be awesome! 🔵🔵⚪️⚪️⚪️
I honestly felt ashamed that I couldn't do shoot the moon because I've been yoyoing for 13 years and that was one of the basic tricks i couldn't do. I spent two days straight just trying to do it and I finally got it. Have I done it since? Nope. But I did it. So never again.
I can't do a tension hook or a finger spin also can't do a 1.5 hook or anything above that if you could make a tutorial on these that would be great also if you want I would be happy to teach you a snap start
Ann, right when your finger hits the yoyo then move your hands apart because the string will keep on wrapping around your finger and slow it down if your hands are close
Everytime someone on the Reddit yoyo subreddit asks what first yoyo to get, they always say that they're leaning towards the Shutter or something similar. I always try to encourage them to get a plastic, responsive yoyo. I think it's important to start with something like this because: 1. You are going to ding your yoyos. You'll be much less sad when you get your first ding on a $5-$15 yoyo than you will a $50 yoyo. The second reason is: 2. Unresponsive, metal yoyos are too forgiving. When your learning to throw a yoyo correctly, or any other trick, you will learn the trick sloppily if you use something too forgiving. A metal yoyo, lets use the Shutter as an example, Is stable and rim-weighted making learning these simpler tricks too easy. Your form will be sloppy and you'll never learn how to throw correctly. If you use a yoyo, lets use the One as an example, that lacks stability and rim-weight, you are forced to throw straighter and harder so the yoyo won't tilt and die.
Sam Hicks So what, do you practice every trick on an unstable plastic now or is it just for when you're starting out? I feel like my style isn't the greatest but I moved on from plastics pretty early, after like 4 months. I try to use old school plastic throws every now and then to improve my style but it just feels tedious for every trick
My list of of tricks im still struggling to do snap start is a no go lol, spirit bomb, sea sick, and green revolutions ive been trying spirit bomb for about a year and not even one successful attempt
I couldn't do Brent Stole until just this past week. But since I've gotten used to my brent stole by Hook has been comming out in a double trapeze unsted of the double undermount. Not sure how I'm making that mistake though XD
i can do ninja vanish green triangle slack trapeze and many other difficult tricks i always found finger spins hard but i watched a lot of videos and got it
Exact same! Hey, at least you can catch the dang thing! lol, I can't do a non wobbley stamp start or finger spins either. I still try em both, every day for over a year now, and I haven't improved at ALL. Thank goodness thumb starts and that cool ?foot start? are a thing..
I never been able yo do more than 1 pop-n-fresh and I can only do bongy Boing with my right hand, the rest of awesome tricks only my left hand can do them and I actually can't do the classic snap start, I had yo create my own version instead xD
Took me a while and I still can't land it 100%, but when you swing it make sure to swing it perfectly perpendicular to your finger, just barely swing it around your yoyo hand pointer finger, and point your non throw hand down and outside. Then practice it 2000 times.
it's just funny cause ik once you get it it's going to be easy AF it's funny tho my first yoyo was horizon so I mastered finger spins 😂 haven't Hurd about pop n great till this video tbh
I am not professional yoyoer but as per my experience you keep your finger much tight it while doing finger spin which is not good try doing it with relax finger I think that would work
Im really bad at horizontal. Its on and off. Sometimes I can and sometimes I cant. Just yesterday night I hit myself in the face with my Horizon, trying to do Horizontal figure 8.
I do not know how to do: Pop 'n Fresh Brent Stole Matrix Ripcord Split the Atom Figure 8 Letter A Eli Hops (consistently. I still miss with the Flight 😑) Itzy-Bitzy Baby Branding and Black Hops (consistently)
Brian Liska It's amusing you said ripcord... I tried it for hours learning it. I was so angry but finally got it, and honestly I cannot explain or understand how it works. I can consistently do it, but nothing about it makes sense, it just happens.
Zach Straw it's Not that Kind of Hard to understand, Do one roll, Not two, maybe you understand it then, bcs it will drop of completely if you let one Finger Go
I think to finger spin u need to keep ur finger relax and ni pressure on the muscle when u do it ur finger will vibratw instead of the yoyo i did it once
Well i can do the wrist mount dismount and horizontal bind and almost all slack tricks lol , currently learning 5A. So its ok Ann - i cant do the seasick either ( we have so much in common , we should date )
I would call myself pretty good at yoyoing, but the one thing I can't do is hops. I dont even know where to start when you do a hop, I watched the yoyotricks video on it, but I still can't do it. I can pop out of a GT though, weird.
i used to yoyo back in the revival in the late 90s as a kid and i wanted to be good soo bad but all i could get were the burger king yomegas they did for a while and i remember thinking the trapeze was impossible lol i recently picked it up and going to metal yoyos learning to bind was kinda second nature coming from those days
I started out on an imperial aswell, mostly because I could buy it without shipping from the US but it was everything i needed at that point and more. I've been yoyoing since July and i still use it from time to time even though I have a shutter and a sage, some yoyos are just fun to throw around.
Can't snap start either. Lol. This video is great. I've been off and on since the 70s. Got serious a number of times through different phases. I skateboarded most of my life. Until serious injuries took me out. But always went to my yoyos during recovery. Just always fun to be learning tricks. Juggled a lot through the years as well. But what a positive video. I was just thinking all of this about Monkey Madness just today. I always go back. And just can't get that one. So frustrating. I remember the rejection on magic drop was one that took me so long.
Hey Ann when trying to do a fingerspin try to keep the yoyo farther out towards your non throw hand side and make sure to pull slight tension on the string towards you non throw hand when hopping the yoyo into the fingerspin.... if you watch this video when you tried to do it notice the string wrapped below the yoyo on your finger causing it to be difficult so when going to mount in the FS pull you throw hand away from the yoyo so the string is horizontal like the yoyo lol hope this helps:D
don't feel bad I can't snap start or fingerspin either of course really I can sorta double or nothing I found Houdini mount to be easier and I can plastic whip about 3 of 5 attempts so. yeah I'm new
really enjoyed this video im ood school from the days we use to recess the froction pads on freehands, i learned all basic tricks on a duncan cold fusion haha its been 20 years yoyoing and one trick i cant do at all is boingey boing smh drives me nuts
My best tip for finger spins is to start of with the yoyo at a slight angle and just try and lick your finger into the right place, through it across your body and gradually get more and more horizontal. I know this technique works because I got it first time
hey Ann, can you do a kendama video? just trying it or what you think of it
I can’t do horizontal yo yo tricks😢
What do you do instead of snap starts? I've seen your 2015 women's division video and you quick start it when it dies but I can't find that start anywhere on TH-cam
I have big issues with Suicide (I hit about 5% of the attempts), I can't do Iron Whip and I learnt horizontal combos before Wrist Mount, so I see your point XD
Boing-e-Boing I can't do Boing-e-Boing
It's difficult!
Grant Clark u don't want to know about under over bong e bong e
same under over bong e bong e is impossible
Grant Clark lord all mighty I can't either
Black Hops have vexed me for at least 10 years now. And I have missed Skin the Gerbil in every ladder competition I have ever competed. I can hit it most of the time day-to-day, but when it counts I choke.
Lol watching this rn and I can’t do follow or Jade whip very well.
This is why Ann Connolly is my favorite yoyo channel. You don't need to know everything to be a pro. It brings joy to my heart
I love your vids! please never stop posting!lots of love from a fellow foreigner in Cz.
Ann can you review your (own) yo-yo the sage or the canon
Hey Ann a tip from Paul Kerbel's finger spin tutorial is to let your finger be "soft". Basically don't stiffen your finger, let the yoyo press against you finger alittle. It's tough to explain until you've done it.
Don't worry though I can't do seasick as well.
TheProJustOfficial on the space cadet this is not as important as the yoyo does a great job keeping your finger centered. But yes don't have too stiff of a finger when fingerspinning. I think the issue is mostly keeping the string away from the yoyo
Try a magic yoyo skyva finger spins
Wha. Ann so is it okay if i cant do boingy boing and hand grinds but still be able to win 7th at bay area
4 years of throwing taught me horizontal, fingerspins, Yuki Spencer combos, intricate tech and so much. But I cannot hit Kamikaze or brent stole... But oddly i can do the crossed arm-gt laceration.
The way I do finger spins is in the middle of popping the yoyo up onto your finger, I move my righting hand backwards to not get the string tangled.
yoyoing is really hard, and you're definitely right about 2A being hard. I'm learning it at the moment and even though I learned how to use my weaker hand pretty quickly, it's still really hard. Also, I can't do snap starts, you're not alone! By the way, you're awesome!
for some reason i cant to "boingy boing" :( but what are your thoughts on the space crown ultra?
"I know it, I got, but I forgot it" Ann Connolly
HI ANN CONNOLY I AM A BIG FAN PLS TELL ME WHERE DO YOU Buy YOUR YOYOS
same thing happens when I try finger spins, the string gets wound up around my finger, apparently it's because you need to hold your throw hand further away from the yoyo almost taught with a little slack.
I don't know if I can do finger spins since I have the Horizon which makes it impossible to miss. Tried only once on my shutter and failed
how do you get sponsored?
I Just Got My YoYo Factory Horizon, and i can't bind, Can someone Please Help? I don't know if its the speed of me pulling it, but i need help.
Much wisdom in this post, good job and appreciate the honesty. Not quite so disheartening that I can't get the timing down for Boing-E.
I have been yoyoing for god knows how long now and still can't hit black hops consistently. It's one of my favorite tricks to see and I cannot land the 2 hops back on to save my life. Some days I can't even properly get into the triple or nothing to start it.
Make sure you keep the string extremely horizontal to the yoyo so it doesn't wrap around your finger. You're not the only one who can't do seasick XD
I always forget to do that and the string get wrapped in the yoyo each time lol
probably it's because of your nails that you can't do finger spins xD
Ann Connolly
Michael Wolf thanks for the yoyo advice on finger spins
I empathize with everything you said. I started on a yomega fireball and for the longest time felt like butterfly yo-yos where a cheat. I still 16 years after i started this hobby am working on kwijibo, doing a seasick where i don't miss and fall out of it and can not snap start to save my life. I tried the snap start..... even I can do it I know only binds , kamikaze mount and double or nothing. well.... thnx for teaching me ann
I bought cyrstal for spfinger spin cause I thought replay pro is not good for finger spin and I cannot do that even on cyrstal lol.
I honestly felt ashamed that I couldn't do shoot the moon because I've been yoyoing for 13 years and that was one of the basic tricks i couldn't do. I spent two days straight just trying to do it and I finally got it. Have I done it since? Nope. But I did it. So never again.
Shoot the moon is also one of the hardest tricks. Even Shu Takada says so.
Seasick :( literally the hardest trick ever created lol
I'm seeeaaa sick of it too, man.
Try beesting
Throws up

oh yeah thats ture i know this guy who actually got a shutter as his first yoyo and when he does his tricks its extremely un smooth
Completely agree!
Sam Hicks So what, do you practice every trick on an unstable plastic now or is it just for when you're starting out? I feel like my style isn't the greatest but I moved on from plastics pretty early, after like 4 months. I try to use old school plastic throws every now and then to improve my style but it just feels tedious for every trick
quackoqazs just simpler tricks. forward throw, breakaway, and some easy stuff like cold fusion and magic trick.
Sam Hicks ay Sam wassup
when i first learned magic drop i could do it almost every time for some reason i just cant do it anymore the string just doesnt reject
What is the black eye
HEY IN THIS VIDEO YOU CANT
-SHOOT THE MOON
-SEASICK
-FINGER SPIN
-SNAP START

I can do finger spin
GT laceration was the ONLY trick I wanted to learn when I picked up yoyoing again! Still my fav. trick, too!
I dont keep my finger completely straight i curl it in a bit and land it on my nail hope that helps!!
My list of of tricks im still struggling to do snap start is a no go lol, spirit bomb, sea sick, and green revolutions ive been trying spirit bomb for about a year and not even one successful attempt
And i started playing with the yomega yomods range now i have 3 plastic yoyos and 3 metal yoyos 6 years later
I couldn't do Brent Stole until just this past week. But since I've gotten used to my brent stole by Hook has been comming out in a double trapeze unsted of the double undermount. Not sure how I'm making that mistake though XD

"I can't do fingerspins"
#firstworldproblems
Get a Horizon yoyo, it helps in fingerspins
Can you do gentry stein's drift or Evan's porygon?
I can't also do looping the double cloud rainbow and baristalist and over the side
I can't snap start either and it took me a month to figure out how to dismount a wrist mount. now I'm trying to learn Spirit bomb.
Hey ann try using te shutter with a glove from the dollar store that's how I learned
I never been able yo do more than 1 pop-n-fresh and I can only do bongy Boing with my right hand, the rest of awesome tricks only my left hand can do them and I actually can't do the classic snap start, I had yo create my own version instead xD

it's just funny cause ik once you get it it's going to be easy AF it's funny tho my first yoyo was horizon so I mastered finger spins 😂 haven't Hurd about pop n great till this video tbh
Jack Rourke STRING between your fingers has to be at 90° to the yoyo!
I like the practice 2000 times like ain't nobody got time for day😂
Wait, that means u Cant Do the Trick in Your tut from yotricks(hot tammeli or smthng)?
Hey Ann! I'm a VERY BIG FAN of you. I'm Spanish and I'm learning to YoYo with a ONE. Greetings from Galicia, Spain. I love you!
Ann I cant do finger spins either, I cant even get the yoyo on my finger.
I am not professional yoyoer but as per my experience you keep your finger much tight it while doing finger spin which is not good try doing it with relax finger I think that would work
please come to india,mizoram
Im really bad at horizontal. Its on and off. Sometimes I can and sometimes I cant. Just yesterday night I hit myself in the face with my Horizon, trying to do Horizontal figure 8.
I do not know how to do:
Pop 'n Fresh
Brent Stole
Matrix
Ripcord
Split the Atom
Figure 8
Letter A
Eli Hops (consistently. I still miss with the Flight 😑)
Itzy-Bitzy Baby
Branding
and Black Hops (consistently)
Brian Liska It's amusing you said ripcord... I tried it for hours learning it. I was so angry but finally got it, and honestly I cannot explain or understand how it works. I can consistently do it, but nothing about it makes sense, it just happens.
Zach Straw it's Not that Kind of Hard to understand, Do one roll, Not two, maybe you understand it then, bcs it will drop of completely if you let one Finger Go
I sicker at finger spins for a long time, but my problem was my throw after I got that right it was easy, you should try it out
dam it auto correct I ment sicker not sicker
dam it i ment sucked
I think to finger spin u need to keep ur finger relax and ni pressure on the muscle when u do it ur finger will vibratw instead of the yoyo i did it once
Well i can do the wrist mount dismount and horizontal bind and almost all slack tricks lol , currently learning 5A. So its ok Ann - i cant do the seasick either ( we have so much in common , we should date )
I can do fingerspins and even bind from a finger spin.... but I can't do horizontal AT ALL.
CAN YOU TELL US THE IDEA OF THE SHOOT THE MOON!? (Please respond)
i would like a wooden yoyo built like the sage or even like the horizon or in that style of yoyo that be cool
I would call myself pretty good at yoyoing, but the one thing I can't do is hops. I dont even know where to start when you do a hop, I watched the yoyotricks video on it, but I still can't do it. I can pop out of a GT though, weird.
i always land on a brent stole when i try to do a hidemasa hook and when try a brent stole i always land on a hidemasa hook
One of the best videos you´ve made Ann :))
Ann, you are an incredible yoyoer. A few tricks is nothing(snap starting is hard I can't).
Thank you i know the feeling
Relax your finger = fingerspin =)
I can't snap star. and my finger spins are ugly at best. but the one I'm embarrassed about spirit bomb.
Great Vids Ann All the time ^_^
My first yoyo was a imperial then a fast than a flip side freehand pro and then replay
i cant do boingy boing or seasick jade whip or iron whip i cant do thumb mount is impossible to small fingers
What's the age?
i used to yoyo back in the revival in the late 90s as a kid and i wanted to be good soo bad but all i could get were the burger king yomegas they did for a while and i remember thinking the trapeze was impossible lol i recently picked it up and going to metal yoyos learning to bind was kinda second nature coming from those days
I cant do the break away and split botom mount properly but l can do a wrismount boing e boing and more
I have a Skyva. Still can't finger spin.
Tips
1. for the finger spin pull the string so it wont wrap around your finger
i cant do seasick i cant do shoot the moon (kind of i could do it with offstring)
I started out on an imperial aswell, mostly because I could buy it without shipping from the US but it was everything i needed at that point and more. I've been yoyoing since July and i still use it from time to time even though I have a shutter and a sage, some yoyos are just fun to throw around.
hey Ann you should try skyva
fingerspin become easy af
Can't snap start either. Lol. This video is great. I've been off and on since the 70s. Got serious a number of times through different phases. I skateboarded most of my life. Until serious injuries took me out. But always went to my yoyos during recovery. Just always fun to be learning tricks. Juggled a lot through the years as well. But what a positive video. I was just thinking all of this about Monkey Madness just today. I always go back. And just can't get that one. So frustrating. I remember the rejection on magic drop was one that took me so long.
Great vid Anne!
Thanks for sharing! : )
I've been struggling with black hops for over a month now. Haven't landed the whole thing once.
Black hops was once considered one of the most difficult yoyo tricks ever. Still is I think, so it's alright. I struggle with it too sometimes.
I can't do seasick or a snap start either
I cant do rock the baby🤣🤣
Hey Ann when trying to do a fingerspin try to keep the yoyo farther out towards your non throw hand side and make sure to pull slight tension on the string towards you non throw hand when hopping the yoyo into the fingerspin.... if you watch this video when you tried to do it notice the string wrapped below the yoyo on your finger causing it to be difficult so when going to mount in the FS pull you throw hand away from the yoyo so the string is horizontal like the yoyo lol hope this helps:D
1:22 ann you must stretch the string becose the do this
I am a intermidiate player and I learned finger spins like a month ago
I can't do shoot the moon sea sick & finger spin :(
don't feel bad I can't snap start or fingerspin either of course really I can sorta double or nothing I found Houdini mount to be easier and I can plastic whip about 3 of 5 attempts so. yeah I'm new
I can't do a snap start or finger spin either
really enjoyed this video im ood school from the days we use to recess the froction pads on freehands, i learned all basic tricks on a duncan cold fusion haha its been 20 years yoyoing and one trick i cant do at all is boingey boing smh drives me nuts
My best tip for finger spins is to start of with the yoyo at a slight angle and just try and lick your finger into the right place, through it across your body and gradually get more and more horizontal. I know this technique works because I got it first time
I can't do Yuuki Slack...or any cool speed combos. And I remember when getting a decent metal was huge pain in the ass.
I can’t do any type of slack trick
