I think the general sentiment is that the USA is ignorant, pretentious and polarized. Yet there is also a big amount of respect for what the country has achieved or what it's capable of (not necessarily militarily, more in a broad sense). As an American I think we are in a low point as a country. We have gone from a pretty progressive country for its time to a country stuck in the past as many don't want to change outdated systems. On the positive side I do believe that this is a temporary state since we have been her before.
America is basically in the second gilded age and I believe its only a matter of time till we hit a second great progressive era. Really just depends on overcoming the inertia in our current political and economic situation.

The Dutch parliament has 15/16 parties, including three Christian parties, three liberal parties, two social-democratic parties (which during the last election decided to somewhat unite under one party) and even a party for conspiracy theorists. And that’s only the parties *in* the parliament. There are also at least 3 other genuine parties with a decent following that fall just short of an actual seat in parliament, and then another 4 or so parties with the potential of becoming actually competitive parties.

As a french, an important point that I haven't seen mentioned yet is the influence of the US government on Europeans governments.
The US is a world super power, and many Europeans countries who where super powers in the past are now relayed to being just normal powers. As a result (and due to important external threats), many Europeans nations rely now on the US for economic, diplomatic and most importantly military support. That influence is regarded by many people here as a negative, as it oppose with the goals of "european sovereignty" led by many European political Parties, and, as a result, many problems in modern Europeans politics are attributed to US influence, sometimes regardless of the connectivity.

No, the United States IS 50 different countries. State literally means country in the US. That is why states hold so much power. Each state has its own constitution, its own state laws, its own prison systems and extradition policies. It used to be so divided that police couldn't chase a criminal over state lines (that has since changed due to prohibition). Each state thus has its own slightly different, or some cases, vastly different culture. We do have a national identity, but there is also state identities and rivalries. Shoot, at one point, Missouri and Kansas would regularly get into shootouts.

The political polarisation may be due to the fact U.S. (but also U.K., though it seems to be on a smaller scale compared to U.S.) has a system based on just two parties so they are constantly battling one another, creating a stereotypical image of their voters etc.. European/other countries that have proportional system have more smaller parties that eventually have to sit next to each other, talk about their common objectives and form a coalition against the "more different/radical" parties - that alone takes at least some of the polarisation and conflicts out of the equation, but also creates more room for criticism/scrutiny, which is essential in healthy democracies. Maybe one day, US will change that :)

A lot of the criticism they will float at an American they tend to be guilty of themselves. I also believe a lot of people in Europe are unaware of how diverse and different our culture and country is. For example, the difference between state and federal law. I have many friends here who say, "I hate that America banned abortions." When in fact all we did was pass down that decision to the states themselves and there are states in the US that have much more liberal abortion laws than most European countries. It is a situation of a group of people saying the other is ignorant when they themselves are guilt of such ignorance. Just my opinion.

As an American, I was fortunate to have a family that had the capability of traveling the world and being part of an exchange program. I learned quickly that people want to stereotype and place people into a box. The ones that jump to these stereotypical conclusions are those who have not left their country or even their state! I strongly believe that individuals should travel the world and meet a variety of people because we all are similar in our own way. We may have different beliefs. We may have different perceptions of the world. In addition, just because a country voted for a particular leader of their country does not define that particular individual.
I am writing this comment because I had an interaction at a hostel with someone not from America. He had a preconception about who I am and was rather rude to me. Fortunately, other individuals were nice and welcoming. I want everyone to realize that we must get to know the individual and not label an individual by where they came from. I think one of the main reasons why the US citizens don’t learn other languages is because we border only 2 nations Canada which speak primarily English, and Mexico which speaks primarily Spanish, those along the border are more inclined to learn Spanish but it isn’t necessary. People in Europe learn other languages because they are surrounded by different cultures and languages, and the biggest language they are all learning is English. So even if an American travels to Europe, chances are they can find someone who speaks English.

I’m an American live on and off in Spain and when having these conversations with my EU friends they do not understand. American is the land for whatever. And they just do not understand that. When I explain that a person can retire from car detailing they have looks of disgust. In my opinion it’s the fact that we have the ability to find any job and do that and have the ability to make money and retire from
It easily. While they have to do it the long route, the old fashioned way.
The first time I’ve used a vending machine in Spain it took me around five minutes. My Spanish girlfriend could not understand that it worked differently.
I believe that Europeans are taught to view America a certain way until they can make their own decisions. Good, bad or in between.
Then when they visit the U.S., they make the assumption that we are all the same like in their country. But this is not the case. I am from the south east. This region is typically similar but people move from other regions. And they assume that we all listen to the same music. In America there is no “national music genre”. Like for example, one could agree the for Spain their national music genre is flamenco.
Not everyone in America will listen or tolerate country music, rap, blue grass, jazz, or hip hop.
And when people say we don’t have interest in other countries we do but it is just not relevant. For example, if there is an economic crisis in Denmark it has a more effect on that part of the world than America. And when speaking with my EU friends they don’t accept that as an answer. Then when I flip the script and talk about problems in Oklahoma with have issues for New Hampshire or North Dakota I just get a blank expression.
The fact is, the Europeans want to be correct all the time, this is why the only topics they bring up are the ones they can back up. Which makes sense, one has to prove their reasoning.
But the individual has the ability to do whatever, take on information and learn and do with it what they will.
I have never felt unsafe in America… although I’m an athletic built black male. But that perception is still subjective I know plenty of females of all ethnicities that will walk down an alley way at 130 pounds 5’6”. It’s the mindset and how you grew up. “Don’t look like an easy target” in any country a criminal will go after you if you look like an easy target. That doesn’t matter where you are at.
I have learned that Europe has taught their citizens to be passive, of course not everyone is, but being passive and by having everyone “the same” works for them.

So a thing about the bubble Americans live in is that for most other people it also seems kind of ignorant, because we are informed about the politics and economics of other countries and the view of a lot of americans just makes it seem like they are quite ignorant to the outside world.
And i do understand that you have a bigger country to focus on then most (for example) Europeans but we learn about the us as well. Another point that makes this perception worse is probably the languages, in europe you learn at least three languages over (a minimum of) four years. We do not need to learn french or spanish or whatever most of the time because we also speak english but we still learn it for like traveling and stuff because it makes a way better Impression to speak the language of the country your in (even if you struggle) because you make that effort. This is a thing americans don't do most just expect every one to speak english and that just comes over as rude or ignorant.

    • @jammer9941
      @jammer9941 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

To be fair on the language part most of us Americans just will not encounter opportunities to use another language all that much. For example I was required to take several years of Spanish in school but it wasn't until almost a decade later till I was in a place that would have given me an opportunity to use it and had forgotten most of what I had learned by then. Those that live close to the Mexican border you find a much higher percent of Americans that speak Spanish and English because you are more likely to encounter both and those that speak the english and spanish has risen significantly the last few decades as influence has increased. Outside of those 2 languages it's rare to ever encounter any other language so you are going to have a natural barrier for learning a language when you will almost never get a chance to speak with a native speaker unlike in say Europe where the likelihood is significantly higher so it's just more practical.

I can only speak for the EU: between 2021 and 2027 the EU will spend €1.21T on Common Agricultural Policy funds. There is also a further €808B allocated to decarbonising and digitalising agriculture practices for the same period. This funding enables small, family run farms to stay competitive with larger producers; this maintains the social fabric of rural Europe whilst also pressuring larger producers to match the quality of produce from said farms (strict anti-trust laws prevent price gouging). As such, high quality food is available to most consumers due to these subsidies.

It's never just Spain, Sweden, France or Greece when you ask an american about what they love and hate about Europe, and it always ends up as a generalized thing where Europe is seen as a single entity.
And for many things, that can be true. Most of Europe at least accepts the Euro, even if it's not the official currency in that specific country. But when it comes to culture and the people, talking about Europe as a whole is no more accurate than if we began using "American" to mean literally anyone from north or south america, implying that there is no difference between someone from Canada and Brazil for instance...

Drew if you ever come back to New Orleans you have to go get bbq shrimp from Deanie’s. I prefer the one in Bucktown, on the Pontchartrain. If you can’t get to that one, the one in the Quarter is fine.
