Good on you Mark for sympathising with addiction problems. Paul Merson makes a good point about the FA and PL being quite happy for betting firms to sponsor clubs while dishing out bans.

There's no correlation here... Tonali isn't getting a ban because gambling is bad or because he has an addiction... Tonali is getting banned for a legal conflict of interest which he was aware of

That’s not how hypocrisy works. They aren’t holding a moral stance while not upholding it themselves, this is specifically about athletes not being allowed to bet on the sport they’re participating in, which makes perfect logical sense. They can bet on anything else they like.

Well they deny that they knew. Newcastle made them an outrageous offer, Tonali transferred in July and nothing came out about this until October. It seems believable that they didn't know about this.
Proof? They got a great offer and they took it. Absolutely nothing to suggest they knew anything about this.

As much as I understand that addiction is awful in any form... Gambling gets a horrible name compared to drugs or alcohol despite having some of the best rehabilitation tools like Net nanny. People need to grow up and realize gambling is just meant to be entertainment. Gambling sites are by law required to include these rehabilitation techniques on their site too

As a Newcastle fan I'm devastated and annoyed. Really poor homework from Newcastle. A problem this big should never had gotten through the cracks. Should have spent the extra money for Barella.
Absolutely gutted at barely seeing Tonali kick a ball this season, such a talented player. What could have been this season. Players do need to be put off through bans but they do need support to get over these addictions. It's going to be a long road before Tonali kicks a ball again but will be like a new signing when he does.

Tonali was a player that I loved to watch when he was at AC Milan, its sad to see this happening.
Any ban from the FA will likely be concurrent with the one he is already serving. Football needs to dissociate itself from gambling and gambling companies..
These bets were placed before his initial conviction. There is no evidence he placed bets while suspended, the FA was aware of these bets when he admitted everything back in october. Its only taken this long to charge him.
It's a total disgrace of justice for Tonali to face double jeopardy for basically the same crime/disorder
And you know this how? He was charged and suspended by Italian authorities for 18 months, with 8 of those commuted. The FA wasn't aware of anything when they registered him as a Newcastle United player. These are fresh charges for bets he placed after he became an EPL player. You can count on him missing the entire next season.

It’s insider trading, for example you could know the line up prior to everyone else and bet on first goal of the striker is different for the day.

To be fair, he can gamble as much as he wants, as long as it's not on football. If he wants help with his gambling addiction, great - help him, but he's not a victim in this circumstance, and his addiction is not an excuse because he can bet on literally anything else he wants with no profession-related repercussions.
I work for a bookie, and it's our responsibility to restrict bets from the sport of that sports pro. The bookie created the platform to allow this and should be heavily fine imo!

Where did you get this from? Milan denied knowing about it. I may be biased because I'm a Milan fan, but Newcastle made them outrageous offer for Tonali. We as fans were shocked that he was to be sold because a lot identified with him as he also was a Milan supporter as a kid. Of course now they won't come out and admit it. But Tonali transfered in July and we didn't here anything about charges until October. So Milan should be given the benefit of the doubt until evidence comes out that proves that they knew.

This reminds me of the Michael Jordan gambling addictions stories and news, the key for me here is to really establish, before speaking, whether Tonali really has an addiction problem or is it softer than that and, if the latter, whether a professional footballer’s career could be back on track
