That future Terminator was played by Franco Columbo. He unfortunately died this summer. He drowned while swimming while on vacation in Italy. :(

@Daniel Anderson I always felt that was the idea behind Salvation, it was much earlier in the war, before the humans were totally driven underground and into the dark, the sequel to Salvation would of being like this, I bet.
The fact that Kyle used to spend a lot of time looking at Sarah’s photo and wondering what she was thinking about, and then discovering that she was actually thinking about him is mind blowing.
Terminator is basically a time travel movie
Like in a dream a distant lover and only hope in a bleak future. Transcending beyond time.. beyond love & eternity. This part of the movie with Kyles & Sara's character connecting is just something unexplainably beautiful. Brilliant how Cameron makes it so that photograph becomes a link between Past, Present & Future. 🍷
Greatest ending ever with that photo, and Sarah riding into the storm and an unknown future.
Til his death he didn't know Sarah was thinking about him.
@@hugostigglitz9639 Reese says that he always wondered what she was thinking about in that photo. Until the ending, you don't realize that she was actually thinking about him, after he had already died, and carrying his child, who would go on to be the savior of mankind. The more you think about it, the more you realize it really IS the greatest ending ever.

Kyle Reese is one of most tragic characters in all of fiction. He’s experienced nothing but pain, death and hardship all his life, and when he finally experiences happiness, he dies shortly afterwards. It’s heartbreaking.
And the worst thing is that it doesn't end there, because if you think about all the life John had to lead from his conception onwards, without a father figure to care about him and knowing everything he will have to do, knowing that the only moments he will finally be able to share with Kyle, his real father and a younger man who struggles to survive will be nothing more than to train him and convincing him to go back in time and protect Sarah, unaware that he is heading to his own death, just to ensure his own existence and the survival of the entire human species.
At least he had those several hours of happiness and love. Lots of the people from his reality haven't ever had even this. Just imagine such a horror.
But yes, he's still one of the most tragic figures in sci-fi ever.

I love the scene where Kyle and the kid pretend to shot each other. It shows that despite the horror that he has had to endure. Kyle's spirit is not broken, he can still find joy in simple things.

He was a good soldier. The music was epic.
That T-800 in that future flashback, shows that not all T-800 have Arnie's face. Also, the human resistance have it rough. They are feeding on rats to survive. That's why Michael Biehn's casting as Kyle Reese was spot on. Jia Cortney's Kyle Reese looks like a guy who's been feeding on protein shakes.

This scene was absolutely brutal. A moment of peace in an ongoing war without hope... interrupted by a cold calculated killing machine with no emotions...just slaughters everyone ..men women and children. This is why this Terminator movie will always be the best. Truly terrifying.
It even takes a second to kill the dogs.

GREAT CUT AT 2:34... at first it looks like they are watching television, but then it cuts to a scene that demonstrates just how far humanity has fallen.

To me, it symbolizes the status of mankind. The news, cartoons, comedies, family movies, cooking/talking shows. The TV once showed us how vibrant, happy, and live mankind was. Using just a small fire, its symbolizing how extinct humans have become, how the world is now just a scorched wasteland instead of the colorful and living world we once knew.
It's even worse in this future with Honey Boo Boo and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.
The word is "haunting". That cut has stayed with me my whole life since first seeing the movie.

THIS is the dark future of the story that we all know and love. Nobody is clean, nobody is cool, nobody looks like they're getting 3 meals a day and getting showers. The atmosphere really does feel like humanity's extinction is right around the corner. Everyone feeding on whatever they can find and morale is at an all time low. Even soldiers like Reese have it rough, no barracks for them. Just pick an empty spot to sit on till his next mission arrives.
This scene from 84 had more depth and better feeling than most modern films do put together

Man, that low-angle view of the Columbu terminator, just those sinister pinpoint eyes piercing through the shadows as it emotionlessly carries on massacring all these defenseless people... I think it's one of the most disturbing shots of the entire series. True sci-fi horror.

And it needs that amazing sound track to boot. I know by today standards the crazy music when the t800 is chasing everyone around is cheesy but it still scary to me I still shout at the tv "Fucking leg it mate run omg hes right there hes too close!!!" The horror man is real
I think the low angle shot was mostly due to Franco Columbu’s height being only 5’5. Still worked very well for the scene though.

The playful interaction between the child and Kyle is one of the most precious emotional moments of any movie I've seen. Only a innocent child, and a deep hearted Warrior, could still manage to retain that humanity 2:15
The scene is just pure master piece in a future where humans are at the mercy of terminators .even in the bunker you are not sure if you will see tomorrow since the bunker cannot guarantee safety from blood thirsty killing machines
He would have been a firm yet fair and loving father.

@@Thunderchild-gz4gc If he survived and knew he was John Connor's father.... Not much would have actually changed lol. Reese would know at some point that he would need to die for Sarah and John. John would be a bit more stable and would actually have a much more difficult relationship with young Reese as he had a father this time around.
Humanity in this nightmare scenario is probably raising kids to be warriors from the time they're born. (And humans probably procreating with whoever, whenever, to get numbers up.) That 'innocent' child is probably an old man mentally in this environment. Probably tough as a pine knot, just like Reese. As the saying goes: Good times create weak men, Weak men create hard times, Hard times create hard men, Hard men create good times.
I like how Reese is kind enough to playfully raise his gun a little but smart enough to keep the muzzle down so as to not aim his weapon directly at a kid.
Little details like that really sell the idea of him being an experienced soldier and the guns being dangerous weapons that need be handled carefully rather than props for actors to wave around.

Remember, the budget of the movie is 6.5million. You don't need 200million to make a good Terminator movie.
But you need a lot for CGI. High quality CGI doesn't come cheap except in Europe, Japan, Korea, India and China where movie CGI is still cringy at best.

The video game "Terminator Resistance" pays homage to this scene. At one point you come across your old resistance camp completely wiped out with corpses everywhere. Inside you find a note saying "Great. Now the dogs are barking like crazy" which is a obvious implication a infiltrator is coming.
The part that is chilling is that guys are staring at a burnt tv symbolizing how life was good before judgment day
And then you fight that same infiltrator with fire burning all around just like in this scene. Game isn't perfect but it stayed very faithful to the source.

In the Terminator Dawn Of Fate game you could use the weapon he is using here. the PLM-GG (Plasma Gatling Gun) and you could just blow the heads off the Endoskeletons.
@@lewisner in Resistance you can get red and violet plasma versions of minigun and in Infiltrator mode you can pick up regular minigun.
The bit where the kids are watching the burning fire inside the old television is one of the most iconic scenes to me, dunno why. It's just something you always remember. It's the little things that separate a good movie from a great one.

They're learning machines. It would be ridiculous to think a terminator would only do one of the things it had been designed for: terminate and INFILTRATE. It may have been stupid that it didn't have any other orders after killing Connor, but of course it would learn to blend in with the culture it was in.

@@jayuu8380 I didn't say it wasn't. I just don't see why a terminator blending into society is so strange. Even being an interior decorator isn't that far off, as a machine would probably feel quite comfortable messing around with colours and patterns, and working out the mathematics of it all.

4:15-4:19 in my opinion one of the most iconic shots of the franchise. It's really cool yet undeniably scary just looking at a giant, muscular silhouette of a terminator just slowly moving with a menacing stare of glowing red eyes and annihilating everything around it with a heavy weapon.

@@steveulinski98 yes… the T-600 (at least how them were portrayed in Salvation) were a lot taller and bulkier compared to the T-800. The huge advantage the T-800 had were they were a lot more compact (being suitable to a regular sized man) and his living cover which it's fitting on the guy we see in this scene. Not sure if it's a T-820, may be a T-800 of a mark different to 101 (which are the "Arnie" ones).

Also the T-600s had massive ammo boxes on their backs along with being strapped with mini guns (the one that attacked Marcus in the city and yes I had an action figure of it when Salvation first came out). The T-800 is indeed more compact but reason why I mentioned T-820 is because of one particular part in Terminator Resistance you fought an infiltrator in a hideout that nearly has identical traits to the one portrayed in the movie yet it was labeled as a T-820 which I believe are the same series as Arnold's Terminator (T-800) but with modifications if I presume hence why I believe that could be an 820
4:19 - to see the red eyes of the Terminator as he casually mows down his victims is one of the most haunting yet mesmeric shots in Terminator franchise.

@Pedro Sepulveda It all depends upon what frequency they are broadcasting on. Furthermore, I am currently suspecting that SkyNet doesn’t know of human radio communications because it has control over the US Military’s computer network and can transmit orders via said network.
@Pedro Sepulveda Even if they did, you have to remember the Terminators lost the war so it's unlikely they could do much with the information.
I like that they show Reese isn't just fighting machines. The Resistance command probably rotates their troops on missions between outright fighting, and more 'cushy' jobs like Reese is shown doing some recon. (Probably with some green recruits that can learn from him.)
@@gcHK47 Who knows? Humans and their unpredictability are probably totally playing this asset into their communications. Doing something so blatantly obvious the machines would never think it logical to do so.
@@DAV1979 my goodness attention to detail was prioritized back then when technology wasn't a crutch to work off of. It was what came from the mind and had to be translated on screen, To me that's a more organic and timeless approach as one makes art for us to view and we receive and praise its attention to detail. No technology needed.

T3 was good but it really shouldn't exist. The franchise should have ended at T2
I think salvation was a decent movie although it wasn't as gritty as T1's future and the resistance looked like they were doing pretty well for themselves although it could be explained by the fact that Skynet hadn't developed plasma weaponry yet and those probably wrecked the resistance hard- to the point of extinction.
This scene was a masterpiece of sci-fi horror filmmaking. Years later still one of the more disturbing portrayals of a nightmarish existence.

In most movies, flashbacks are just straight up memories, but here it's a memory mixed with a nightmare. Gives it an edge.

@@pianoandguitarlover2773 The story can appear to be a "closed loop" or sorts, but watch "Terminator Timeline Accurately Explained" by Adel Helal here on YT. It's just one user's take but it does a pretty good job giving reasons how this is possible if only still sci-fi but he adds a logical consistency to it all.
I love this real apocalyptic scene where everyone is dirty, not in the best condition, sick, eating rations, hunting rats for food, and low on resources. A small but cool detail is the guy pointing a gun at Reese while interrogating him. He had a normal HK rifle not a plasma rifle which means that they had to use whatever they could find for protection, food and survival.

Cold and dirty with ruthless killers lurking in every corner.
The wailing and crying in the background is always what got me. People are hollow-eyed, hopeless, just surviving in a world with little to no joy.
4:11 to 4:27, those seconds are one of the best scenes in cinematic history. Everything about it screams 80's, but is just so perfect. The synthesizer that dominates the scene, Sarah's photo consumed in flames, melting away. When the shot cuts to the Terminator, and the action slows...just a touch. The red eyes. When the Terminator pans its weapon but doesn't fire right away, like its scanning/locking on to its next target and THEN it fires. The scene is raw, gritty. The synth music screams loud about a hopeless future, humanity on the absolute brink of extinction at the hands of Skynet.
Its chilling. Its unforgettable. Its perfect!

I wish Terminator movies was like this again... Just dark, gritty, a hellish nightmare. The T-800s are nothing but killing machines, that do what they called by, no one-liners, no dialogue, no monologue. THEY JUST KILL! No questions asked or answered. The synthesizer absolutely engulfs that part of the scene. They really should bring back synthesizers in movies, but in a more modern version so it doesn't scream 80's so much. lol. (maybe like synthwave style)

4:19 one of my most favourite shots from any movie. The red glow of the infiltrator's eyes is just haunting. James Cameron had a truly awesome vision. Imagine what Terminator Salvation would've looked like with him in the director's chair.
James Cameron lost his touch a long time ago, also it seems he doesn't even care about this franchise anymore, he's all for that nonsense Avatar these days.
And Salvation was ok, not great but underrated. Certainly better than all the sequels after T2.

Salvation was early stage of the war. It was mass production of T 800's that decimated resistance and brought humans on the edge of extinction.

@@DAV1979 The Resistance was doing okay after the 800 series came along. In the original Terminator, sending a T-800 back in time was a move of desperation. According to Kyle Reese, Skynet's defense net had been shattered and it had basically lost the war by that point.
I'm struck by how little dialogue there is in these scenes. Instead of having a character TALK about how bad things are, they SHOW it instead. Modern movies are so bad.

I personally like the original Terminator over the sequel. Judgment Day is amazing but the original is just so much more dramatic and depressing and Arnold is genuinely terrifying as the T800.
Agreed. Honestly as a kid I loved Terminator 2 and 3 the most cause it had so much action but now that I’m older I see that the 1984 Terminator movie truly is the best sci film ever made.
Terminator 1 is plausible, Terminator 2 is starting to really stretch it where you can have a liquid metal machine
Yeap, T2 established that terminators are like foot soldier but they are not. Terminators mission was to disguise as humans to kill them, not to walk arount with laser guns, they had big tanks and planes for that.
T1 is more authentic to what Cameron envisioned for this story.

This scene is exactly like the game. The overhead pipes above the stairs, the dune buggy by the steel door, the TV on fire, everything is so accurate.

I loved Brad Fiedels score for this scene, it gives off that atmospheric haunting synth vibe that really fits the futuristic dystopia.
Yes it's amazing so haunting and perfect accompaniment to the dark horrific world. Pure art.
Especially the bit where Reese walks away from the sign in desk, and you see the petrified girl, wary of anyone entering that door. Pure audio and visual magic.

0:09 I love this line. Reese’s cluelessness for what to talk about goes a long way to paint a picture of his past, growing up in a time where sitting down and having an innocent, non-urgent conversation would be a luxury he never had access to.
That scene with Franco Columbu as a T-800 and his robotic eye shining in the dark is so dam scary. That’s why I love the film. This details are priceless.
As much as I love T2, Michael Biehn's performance as Kyle Reese and the gritty, haunting atmosphere of these future flashbacks make the original film my favourite.

I love the screen colour of this movie. Raw and dark, but charming at the same time.
Raw dark and terrifying was what made it a masterpiece. Dreadful and hopeless knowing that the terminator was out there with one solitary thing in the crosshairs. Absolutely brilliant.
I hate the new sound remix, in this scene it sounds like playing Space Invaders. Why did they have to replace original powerful gun sounds with such "pew pew" sounds
Pretty sure they added modern color correction on this. The colors in the original were grayer as opposed to the green blue and pink in this.
That was the 80s my friend. Movies from the 80s just felt more raw. That's one of the things I love about them.

Joe Pesci's been known for playing terrifying roles (though at the same time sometimes comedic), and he's 5' 4", same with Danny DevVito, who's 4' 10".
The way Kyle always dodges T-800 shots, whether plasma or normal weapons, is fascinating. It looks like he knows a lot about the algorithm of how they trigger the targets and ways to mess and misslead T-800 targeting.

I'm pretty sure this is confirmed. The first time he shows knowledge of Terminator targeting systems is in Tech Noir when he is constantly changing positions when the Terminator turns away, always on the move. Then in Salvation (Anton Yelchin did a good job with the role) he actually outsmarts the machines on several occasions.

Read that the terminator in this scene is Franco Columbu a rival and good friend of Arnold and starred in many films aside him. Fun fact is that while he might seem very superior and overwhelming in these scene he was actually just 5,5 feet or 165cm tall.

I was born in 1984. I was 8 years old when I saw Terminator, at a slumber party with my schoolmates. It was a pretty rowdy circumstance to see the film for the first time, but this scene was imprinted into me to the point I never have or will forget it. More particularly, it was the moment of seeing the mother and her daughter watching the blown out tv on fire like they were just losing their minds trying to find some sort of comfort through memory, nostalgia. Something triggered in my brain at the age of 8 to where my mind opened about the potential disaster humans can send themselves into.
Scavenging hunts, eating rats to survive starvation, Resistance base gets taken by different Infiltrators besides Arnie, and living in a dark, griddy & muddy environment is what should I have expected for a Terminator prequel.
Cool how they showed Sergeant Reese and his unit pulling a scouting/intel mission and returning to base-not just actual combat duty. Reese is obviously a good NCO; he hates losing soldiers under him and instantly went into action when he heard the dogs bark.

Perhaps even piloting a reprogrammed T-800? All I've seen are lackluster side scrollers.
Tom Servo There is a game that came out recently called terminator resistance. It’s more like fallout lite than anything else but that’s okay considering how fallout’s been doing. I haven’t played it but I hear it’s pretty good.
I had a dream that myself and small group of survivors were being hunted down by the harvester terminator from salvation. All we could do was hide in a house as the harvester scanned through the windows looking for us. The harvester moved on and everyone felt relaxed. Then another group of survivors ran to our house and we let them in. As we were talking about where to go, suddenly one guy from the group just started gunning everyone down as his eyes shined red. I literally woke up screaming and sweating. Its been awhile since I had a nightmare that intense. This is what terminator was meant to be, a nightmare of the future.

This part never gets old 2:15 even with how epic this film is, they didn't forget to add little moments like that "pew pew". Kyle Reese is a cool character.
Having been in the military, i have to say the way Kyle uses his weapon scope to follow the Hunter Killer aircraft is so dead on. He's not aiming he's just casually holding it up and getting optics on the target. With it being a digital screen, it makes sense for him to hold it far from his face. I love that little detail.

You can wield it in Terminator: Resistance game. You can then upgrade it to shoot faster and it's exactly like in this scene.

Exactly why Terminators are such an awful enemy : Superstrength, lock on systems and endless stamina. That kind of weapon you would expect mounted to a tank or helicopter, but a Terminator can wield it AND move around. One shot kill.

They very well could, but only 5-10% of viewers would watch it compared to a popcorn flick, so why bother, when you could make 10x as much cash with the same effort.
The shot at 4:19 is genius. Filmmakers who grew up in love with this film SHOULD be able to learn from the atmosphere of this scene and the rest of the film it comes from when they attempt to make a Terminator sequel, but for some reason, they just can't. You don't need massive action set pieces (even though T2 had some great ones), but rather this atmospheric sense of doom and dread. I'd rather have an entire Terminator movie set in confined spaces like this than the uninspired stuff we've gotten.
The stacatto snapping of the plasma minigun always stuck with me. Its exactly what I imagine the sound of pure energy ripping through air would sound like.
In the Terminator Dawn Of Fate video game it was called a PLMGG (Plasma Gatling Gun).
This version of the war is still my favorite. Not even T2 manages to capture the sense of dread, sadness and defeat the first movie achieved with these scenes.

I think it also symbolizes just how far humanity has fallen. With their civilization destroyed, they've resorted back to watching a fire burn as a form of entertainment, like our primal ancestors may have done.

That makes perfect sense. All the soldiers are probably only weighing in at about 160lbs max. While a T-800 is in a form of a 235lbs+ 6'2" bodybuilder.

I think the musical transition is very interesting and well done in this scene. When Kyle is looking at Sarah's pic, the song has a melancholic feel, but when the dogs start barking at the presence of the terminator, it suddently changes into a heavy/chaotic theme, showing that even their once thought safe place is not safe anymore from Terminators!

4:19 I was a bit young when I watched the first terminator movie and have sliced memory of the whole movie, but this is really a frightening scene with Kyle lying down on the ground and looking up at t 800, and all you can see is a deadly terminator with those red eyes.
That red glowing eyes used to scare the s**t out of me. In fact this whole scene did.

Such a great scene. I remembered that he had the photo of Sarah, but not that he lost it. Even that he wasn't allowed to keep, in his time.
"Now" however, back in time, he's with the woman herself. The transition from the photo to real Sarah really hits home what that would mean to Kyle.
I also love that such a brutal scene ends with trust and tenderness. Sarah would never have allowed herself to relax and sleep, if she hadn't grown to trust Kyle.
The scene is neat too because Kyle was always wondering what exactly Sarah was thinking about in that picture, and here we are, with the knowledge that the picture was of her thinking about him after he died.

Something that would have been even sicker is if they show a sort of make shift nursery area for babies and nursing mothers that the T-800 comes upon and open fires at killing them all without hesitation, showing the utter doom and impending extinction of mankind.

This scene is a masterpiece.. Thank you Columbo for leaving us this legacy. Speaking of which unfortunately the Terminator Resistance game did not get the sound right on the RSB 80. As to the scene itself, this is what anything after T2 missed.. eerie, everyone in fear, starved, with little hope but to survive where every hour is a gift in itself. Destruction and chaos all around, darkness of blue hues covering the land, etc. What a wonderful representation of a dystopian future. T1 was horror... as much as I love T2 if I had to pick and keep only one forever.. T1 would be.

Just came back to this scene after playing Terminator: Resistance. The attention to detail from the Hideout is amazing, they really had dedicated developers recreating James Cameron's vision of the future war within that game. Also I wonder if it was Kyle or someone else who managed to stop that Infiltrator.

From all I have heard, the T-800 you play in Infiltrator mode is a model based on the one in this shelter scene in the movie. So there is a chance that the unit we get to play in Infiltrator mode is this one. Maybe he thought his mission was complete, but Kyle was in fact just passed out somewhere in thr flames.

Pretty terrifying considering Terminators are aimbot incarnate. You couldn't even take a peek without it sensing your movement and firing immediately. No wonder these soldiers couldn't do anything in such a confined space, even with their own advanced weapons.

There's a reason why the T-1000 in T2 is a skinny white guy (Robert Patrick)
James Cameron wanted Michael Biehn to play the T-1000; to kind of mess with Sarah Connor state of mind thur out the movie.
Sarah Connor having to fear a face she once loved (Biehn) and having to trust a face once hated (Arnold).
When James Cameron could not secure Michael Biehn; he still wanted Michael Biehn to cameo in T2, the final scene in T2 the T-1000 is supposed to shapeshift into Michael Biehn to trick Sarah Connor but they decided not to go with the scene.
Michael Biehn only recorded one scene in T2 (in the mental hospital as a dream), but it was also cut.
Prior to Franco Columbu (RIP) showing up, this scene breaks my heart. Seeing how the people were suffering, scavenging for rats, crying, those two kids watching a fire in their tv and Kyle's reaction to it all. It's just very emotional because that was Los Angeles for them, that was their Future.
I always imagine that John was the one who took down that terminator.
Then again, this scene shows kyle himself alone is no match for T800. John is a great man with a tremendous amount of knowledge about machines but John himself like Kyle won't be match for T800. He is just far better and more agile than other survival combatants.
