I am not happy with the app either. Lionel has a lot of improvement to make there and the Base 3 Utility for PC won't be out until September so... Anyway, I bought the Base 3 along with a Cab 1L and it works fine. Gives all the Legacy features including the whistle quilling. Have you looked at the Cab 1L?
What annoys me is 2.5 years in the making and it’s full of bugs. No excuses they should have tested the app more rather than people that had existing cab 2 remotes. Sure, they were testing at large layouts, but they weren’t testing using an app. People like us that got into the hobby later only have the app. So this thing should work 100% out of the box. It’s unacceptable that it doesn’t. That’s my opinion.
I did pick up a Cab1L... it's "ok" but has a learning curve. I think #3 starts an engine? #5 is shutdown? Meh. I've been pampered by the DCS remote for 10+ years. Cab1L is good where I can hand it to someone or my kids and say "here. dial is speed whistle is self explanatory"
Appreciate your perspective! Even though I dislike "app" control for my switching layout all I have is the Universal Remote so I ordered the base3 to get the extra features for my Legacy diesels. You would think that the crazy aftermarket prices for cab2's would be reason enough for Lionel to release a physical cab4. I sure hope they do since I refuse to pay the $2000 CAD for a used cab2 that you can't get replacement parts for.
@@TheFailroad Yeah, I'd love it if Lionel would offer a licence to Iowa Scaled Engineering to produce a Protothrottle compatible with TMCC/Legacy, but I know it won't happen.
Good informative video the more I watch videos on Legacy and cab three cab two, I’ll stick with my MTH DCS it’s simple and easy to run. I can still buy repair parts and do most of the repairs needed. Who will or can do the repairs needed for the legacy system?
So, only Lionel can repair them. They stopped the "authorized repair center" thing a couple of years ago. However, I will say there a lot of reports of them making good faith repairs for free for out of warranty items. They're still repairing Base2/Cab2 systems while they have parts as well
I really enjoyed your video. Love how you have your system all wired up, looks nice and clean. 👍

Very helpful detail on train control tech. I am also not a fan of paying too much for stuff. Let the hype die down then get it as a reasonable price.

I won’t do it! Or perhaps Lionel can license it out to a company willing to produce something

the legacy is pretty easy to actually learn and run and lionel is in a much better spot then mth with parts
