I just spent $32,000 on a 1984 GTI with 34,000 miles on it and in showroom condition. I waited 40 years to get it. It was THE car I wanted in HS but my parents wouldn't spend that money on a car. Instead, they bought a 79 Scirocco for me which I did love, but I really wanted the GTI.
I currently own (20+ Years) and absolutely love everything about my 83 Rabbit GTI. As mentioned in the video it’s definitely an attention getter every where I go. The car never disappoints in sparking fantastic conversations and trips down memory lane. I spend most of my time at car gatherings answering questions and meeting new friends.
I drove one for years that was a mid eighties model- cant remember the year but it was a rabbit GTI so must have been around 1985- it was that rusty red color and it was driven a lot back and forth to ski resorts all over the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Loved it, although it did break down on me a few times, but overall a great little car for a college student 😊
Saw a new-to-US GTI in the Ledgewood Mall, NJ in '83 and had to have it, despite the tarted up price tag of like $11K and 21% APR (thank you, Trend VW....). Was a rare "white" one, according to the salesman.....the joke was on me. Other Rabbits would follow me on the highway in the early days, curious about the "GTI" pedigree. I quickly installed a hotter cam and tube exhaust, trying to get more mojo out of the engine. Fun car, sold it for $1500 or so in '86. Nice to see the recent nostalgia, but I miss my '77 SAAB EMS more.
Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. I owned one of these new - a white ‘84, similar to the one here - and it was the single worst assembled car I have ever owned. When it ran correctly it was awesome, but those days were few and far between.
Had a NEW Silver 84 with Blue interior and silver BBS wheels...wore that thing Out ! Funnest Money I ever spent, then bought a 86 944 turbo in 95 for $6800, was as FUN but Much faster.

I waited 30years for the same adventure with my 83

Thanks for sharing!
I don't have a GTI, but I do have a Rabbit Diesel that my parents bought brand new in 1981 when I was a kid. I'm currently restoring it.

Had the 84 red one! My first owned car after using my parents’ 77 (or 79?) rabbit, initially. Great memories
Very cool!
In south africa we got the citi golf, it enjoyed 3 decades if production. Cheap to build and own
Is a citi golf produced by WV or is that a tuner? I’ve been seeing them lately and they are so cool

One my friends of that era had the opposite experience. He loved the little car.
Proud owner of an 83 here, it's heavily modified, but that's ok, its not going anywhere.....

My dad had this classic car.👍
