How is it possible to make Big Ben strike 13 o'clock? There aren't that many numbers on the clockface. Greg Foot uses the speed of sound to play with time and make Big Ben chime thirteen times at midnight.

@@itsmephil2255 I wonder if they actually did it for the episode. I know they showed it happening but I wonder if they just used recordings or if they actually did the experiment and used that recording... I know that's what I would have wanted to do.
If everyone remembers 5 years back, Big Ben chimed 30 times for the 2012 Olympic Games. It's hard to believe it's been that long ago already.

@grubbg001 I made a mistake, it was actually Captain Scarlet (created by Gerry Anderson who did Thunderbirds too) from the episode 'Big Ben strikes again'.
I bet they watched Captain Scarlet when they were younger :D

Apparently there is a legend that if Big Ben chimes 13 times the Lions in Trafalgar Square will get up and start walking around the square. Either they hushed it up really well, or that myth has just been debunked.
Does anyone know what happened to the other video on youtube where people re-created the 13 chimes based on the Captain Scarlet episode?
So the out of phase chimes (the actual chimes and the radio wave chimes) must have been synchronised (1 with 2 and 2 with 3, etc). Therefore if you got closer or further away from Big Ben, you would hear 24 chimes, at midnight or midday?

@coolcam262 On paper that is fine, you would have to be far enough away for the sound from Big Ben so that the sound of the first chime, didn't make it to the listener until the third chime. However, I think that that is simply too far away to hear the bell very well. I might be wrong though.
@Caead Well strickly speaking they heard every chime twice. It's just that they heard them out of sync. They should've stood half the distance that they did and then they would've heard 24 chimes and twice as fast! : )

I doubt it very much that the guy in this video worked it out. They nicked the idea from Captain Scarlet, 'Big Ben Strikes Again'. It was a lot more entertaining than this too.

I'm guessing you're saying this...The first chime they hear over the radio, as it actually occurs. From their location, they'd probably hear that first chime about the time when they hear the 2nd actual chime over the radio. And then the 2nd around the time the radio broadcasts the 3rd, right on down the line. Because the actual chime is being broadcasted over the radio, you turn off the radio after the 12th chime occurs, which allows them to hear the 12th (13th) chime from their location.
They played a video of Big Ben chiming 12 times in the walk-ie talkie and for the 13th chime they declined the walk-ie talkie so the 13th chime was the 1st chime
No, the “13th” chime is actually the 12th chime heard from their location.

we did an experiment in physics class the other day like this, all it is is the equation of the echo and how its synced with the other bell chime so it sounds liike there are still 12 but on the last one you hear another one

@@Yasin_2312 The amount of time it would take for there to be a full delay. Sound travels much slower than light so it will be delayed from the walkie talkie signal which travels at the speed of light.
I recall there was something like that in a Thunderbirds episode, scientifically accurate kids show i guess.

My dad works at the houses, and he'll often hear 24 bongs at 12, as the sound bounces off buildings!

No, it really happens. Sometimes if you're standing round the back of the building on the porch you'll hear it 36 times at 12!! Albeit very quickly, but it certainly is a sound to behold!
