It makes me laugh how satisfyiing I find watching the way that beautiful axe slides through the wood and just shaves it! You've done such a great job with that design! Thank you!
That spoon blank preparation and in particular the hollowing out operation was simply stunning. It's one thing to watch it being done, quite another to do it yourself. Hats off to you sir!
I’ve just bought one of these axes it arrived today,I thought I might have to sharpen it before use so I watched this video first ,….. straight out of the box cuts paper like a razor blade wow ! I’m very impressed with it thank you Robin.
Thanks Robin, Simple and clear inexpensive materials too. I've just received one of your excellent carving axes. It's great! And it came with edge well protected from UK to Pennsylvania. I've axed out three spoon blanks with more ease than with my heavier axe and now I like the one from you the most.
great tip on the honing, i always struggle to find bits of leather wider than a belt, just tried it but with red jewellers honing compound and has worked like a treat. now i have no excuses guess ill go back to making turning blanks
I find with edged tools, especially if I'm a bit uncertain that day, that colouring the edge with a black felt tip will tell me how I'm doing for angle and coverage.
Robin, this is another fabulous video! You make it look so easy and having tried it, so did we ... after a few attempts. We haven't used the water stones since. We couldn't find the self-adhesive wet and dry, but a little PVA works fine with the standard 'Motosave' sheets :-D Time to do the drawknife (do you fancy doing a drawknife sharpening video?). Thanks again.
Hey Robin, greetings from Iraq! Great video, wonderful new series of videos that you have produced. With all the research that you have done for your book, which is great by the way, i wonder if you realise that you are, through these videos, laying down the history of our craft as we understand it now that will hopefully be referenced in years to come. Thanks for taking the time to share these skills with the rest of us. Mike PS not sure if Sandra has sent my axe to you yet but i am really looking forward to getting some time with it when i get home.
Dammit man you make roughing out look so easy! Anyway great informative video I've just ordered one of your axes so knowing how to keep it sharp would be a good idea.
Hi Robin I am a total newbie, just brought a bundle on eBay your axe and spoon gouge, 3 rolls of grit paper. When you use the broom pole for your knifes and last board shown in this video with the polish cream do they have leather stuck on? Thanks
Sharper is safer, but sharp enough to do the job, splitting logs not so much it's more of a wedge you need, for carving definitely more efficient and safer
Don't know if you are still responding here, but I am guessing that to start off with an axe, you first grind on a wheel, leaving a convex bevel and then sharpen and hone after??? If there were Star Trek Transporters, I would come over for a play date....
Shiny magazine paper ! on a board like the grit paper you used try it for your final polish the paper has the mineral white kaolin clay that is found in some toothpaste
hi! i just got an axe which is very dull and just by my personal opinion the angle for carving purpose is too wide. can you give me some tips on which angle ia the best for carving axe and with which grid of sanding paper to start to get there? thank you!
altering the bevel is not so easy and requires much more metal removed than you will achieve with paper. The angle should be between 25 and 30 depending on the hardness of the steel in your axe and the hardness of the wood you are working. If you don't have a powered grindstone or linisher then a good new coarse file will do the job well.
Can you make spoon carving video . I think i have seen all spoon carving videos on youtube but id like to see yours btw good video and i mayby buy ur axe some day it looks so nice :).

Easy when you know how, the last minute is inspiring, cheers Robin!

Leaving a comment so I can find this again
That was very good. Thank you from the future. This was quite a while ago. Greetings from the lowlands of Maryland.
A great and informative tutorial Robin, many thanks for sharing ~Peace~

This looks sensible and straightforward.
Many thanks, Robin! Clear, straightforward instructions! 👍
Great vid Robin, thanks for sharing. You make it all look so easy, sign of a true craftsman.
This guy is a legend!!
I'm very happy with my Robin Wood axe, cheers
Again, really well demonstrated. And nice to see an expert reduction for a spoon with the axe!
Great video! I went back and worked my HK on a 600 grit, and wow, what a difference! It's like brand new. Thanks for the pointers. Love your work.

Love my axe from you, novice sharpener, this is definitely something I'm going to be trying soon! Hope I can get it as sharp as you :)!
Awesome video mate, many thanks.
Nice edge!
Dammit man you make roughing out look so easy! Anyway great informative video I've just ordered one of your axes so knowing how to keep it sharp would be a good idea.
What's the angle on an axe? I heard that it's often 20 degrees, 20 separately on both sides or 10 degrees that end up producing a 20 degree angle?
Great video thank you very much 🙏🏻❤️
Why do you just use mdf with compound for stropping and not a leather strop?
Comment peut-on se procurer du papier émeri au grain si fin ?
I love the axe! I will eventually get me one
C'est un bord scandinave ?

Thanks

Great vid, but I wondrer, is that wet or dry paper?
Serious question. Must an axe blade be razor sharp for survival use?
Sharper is safer, but sharp enough to do the job, splitting logs not so much it's more of a wedge you need, for carving definitely more efficient and safer
I didn't quite get what kind of sanding paper you're using. is it the same kind of sanding paper you use for wood? thanks!
It's wet and dry fine paper, for metal really
Was this a polishing video or a sharpening video?!
puoi usare della pasta abrasiva....
Don't know if you are still responding here, but I am guessing that to start off with an axe, you first grind on a wheel, leaving a convex bevel and then sharpen and hone after??? If there were Star Trek Transporters, I would come over for a play date....
It doesn't have to be a convex bevel for sharpness, this is a flat or Scandinavian bevel he's sharpening and you can see it's effectiveness
If you're worried about your fingers a wooden handle screwed to the back of your board would up the safety.
Nice specs bud

Goos duff!
Love this video
Thanks for sharing 😁👍
Could you do a 60cm chesspiece? That would be a great video. Do the king with an axe.
Who makes the axes? And what steel are they?
Robin makes his own axes. Very famous English axe maker.
Very nice.

ty very much.i will go with file i do my best:)
How weight is this axe? 800 grams?
Is it still possible to buy an axe from you?
This is basically the exact same method I use and the same polish,
Can you give us a link to who made your axe
THAT GUY ON A BICYCLE of consurvation He made it. It’s on his website to buy
Can you make spoon carving video . I think i have seen all spoon carving videos on youtube but id like to see yours btw good video and i mayby buy ur axe some day it looks so nice :).
I have made a series of 4 spoon carving videos, called front room spoon carving, quite old now but still got the basics
Robin where do you get that type sandpaper?! I’m having a hard time finding the adhesive types in sheets.
axminster tools as he stated in the video
If you can't get it, stick some double-sided tape to the back of the sandpaper.
@@suecollins3246 Much better to buy 3M spray adhesive and stick it on MDF or a hunk of glass, granite, or the like. Cheers
Bad boy!
Do you clean the abrasive sheets off with anything to prolong their lives Robin? Ta.
No. They last a surprisingly long time but when they stop cutting I peel it off and stick a new piece on.
@@WoodToolsSheffield Thanks. Have ordered the papers today and will set to once they arrive. Many thanks.
So that how to do it an without the need to spend a fortune on japanes whetstones. Excellent video
You shouldn't need to go through all the grits unless you have chipped the edge.
Darrin Snyder yeah you should definitely try to tell Robin he’s doing it wrong. LOL
Darrin, Robin is a very famous English axemaker.
Tried it, not working!!!!
Works great, try again
lol cant belief ur called robin wood?? that's nearly like robin hood!!
or Throbin Wood...
Would have been better to see you sharpen an axe that needed sharpening and not one that was already razor sharp so we can see that your method works.
I doubt that Robin Wood has any blunt axes....
Stop whinging.
TLDR...rub it with sandpaper
