    Way back before camp quilts , 1970, my wife opened the end of one of our two sleeping bags, laid it flat and cut a piece of poly fabric the same dimensions and sewed it to the sleeping bag. the top side was the down bag and the bottom. poly fabric. With three little kids we could all crawl into the down quilt. No air could escape. Nice and cozy for the whole family. We have also used it as a down quilt on the bed. The down side is bright orange and the sheet side is a sky blue. Our other matching bag my wife opened the bottom to make a quilt, but we did not attached sheet to make it an envelope. Wilderness Backpacking with three kids under five the quilt saved us a lot of bulk and weight. We have not used it on wilderness trips in years but is now part of our auto blizzard, bag.

    Dearie me! - this takes me back! In my teenage years when I started flatting my father worked for a down factory and he gave me a bed quilt which had been returned by a customer. The cover had perished due to it being left in direct sunlight and he gave me some material to make a new cover. That part was easy! Like you I tried transferring the down by hand - Oh what fun! The quilt was a simple design with vertical channels so in the end I hand stitched the opening of the old channel to the opening of the new channel and shook the down into it. Worked a treat!

      Wonderful memories! I've made a fair few more since this one and my down stuffing methods have got a bit more sophisticated and my baffle design a little simpler :) but it's still a little daunting every time I got to stuff.

    You are so freaking ambitious! I would never have the patience for such a project. Congrats!

      Thanks! At the time I swore I'd never play with down again, now I am planning v2 of this quilt :)

      I'm hoping I'll be able to get out and use this new gear soon, but in the meantime I'm waiting for more materials to arrive so I can keep sewing! Glad you enjoyed the video

    Great video thanks. I am just waiting for my bag materials to arrive to start my own bag. This was helpful for the technique to use , or not in regards to down.

      Glad it was helpful! I also made a version of this sleeping quilt with Apex Climashield for warmer summer use. Haven't been able to use the Apex one yet, because it hasn't warmed up enough, but the down one has been great.

    6:52 - too bad you didn't include showing how to rip open seams. I'm actually trying to find a video to figure out how to safely rip open seams in order to add more downfill. That would be a great video for the future!

    A very good video. Wow that took a lot of work. A two person quilt should be warmer for you both. When we first got married, I bought a matched pair of sleeping bags that could zip together. The double bag wasn't quite warm enough for Martha and too warm for me. Who has to carry it? Good Luck, Rick

    • @ChillyBinHikes
      @ChillyBinHikes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Rick, it was a lot of work (but also a lot of fun). I'm interested to see how the temperature works out for us. Not sure who will carry it yet. We will distribute the weight evenly which will probably mean one person takes the tent and the other takes the quilt and sleeping pads - still have to make the new tent though!

    • @richardross7219
      @richardross7219 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChillyBinHikes I'm looking forward to see how you do the tent. I've seen several vids showing how to make a tent with TYVEK. I have considered it but would just make footprints and tarps with TYVEK.
      I'm glad that you find the work fun. I enjoy rebuilding equipment and making things. There is a great sense of accomplishment when completing a project. Good Luck, Rick

    I love these stitching videos! You look so competent - and the result looks so professional even if the method was a bit Heath Robinson lol. Hope you get out of lockdown soon, Happy tramping 😊

      Well you taught me how to sew... so I guess you can take some of the credit for both the competency and the problem solving approach :)

    Very nice! I thought the construction time would way more!

    • @ChillyBinHikes
      @ChillyBinHikes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank Larry, I though it would take longer too, but in the end it was all straight lines so the sewing wasn't too time consuming.

    Great video! When stuffing the down, what do you think about using gloves so less body oils transfer onto the down? Or do you reckon it’s a moot point since you’ll end up sleeping on it anyway?

    • @ChillyBinHikes
      @ChillyBinHikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you enjoyed it. I don't think that gloves would be worth the effort. You aren't handling it much, and only really touching a portion of the down. I've been making more quilts recently, now I use a blower to put the down in. Much less handling, but still just as messy!

    So do you put the mesh on top and bottom or just the top?

    • @ChillyBinHikes
      @ChillyBinHikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mesh is sewn onto the bottom and top layer and then the down stuffed into the pocket that forms between the layers :)

    • @pittsburghsole4860
      @pittsburghsole4860 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChillyBinHikes so you are essentially creating a tube to stuff the down in?

    • @ChillyBinHikes
      @ChillyBinHikes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's it - with the inner and outer fabrics for the top and bottom, and mesh for the sides. It's the height of the tube (distance between inner and outer fabrics/height of the mesh) that controls the temperature rating of the quilt

      If you are in the US try www.ripstopbytheroll.com or www.loosegoosedownsupply.com. I got mine from www.hofmanoutdoorgearsupply.ca in Canada. I would also recommend looking at
      thru-hiker.com/projects/down_quilt.php to see how the baffle sizing and warmth ratings work

      We've used this quilt for somewhere around 8-900km of trails in Canada and New Zealand since I made it a little over a year ago. We absolutely love it, but it's a tiny bit short for us. We will have version 2 ready to go in time for this summer in New Zealand 😀
