This method will not guarantee that they will not get broken. I have done this at least ten times and about 6 of them were broken when delivered. I now ask my neighbors to save their Amazon boxes, specially the small ones, for me. Use boxes. Less plastic and way safer for the CD. I also don’t sell individual CDs. I usually try to sell 5 or more of the same genre or artist. Making sets has not only boosted my sales but also made shipping easier.

I just shipped a pretty valuable DVD to a guy almost identical to this, a little heavier bubble mailer. Shipped first class because he paid so much for the movie, apparently the case got broken in the mail somewhere and he was not happy. Now I'm looking for a better solution, but the Amazon box you showed at the beginning would most likely be a better alternative to a valuable one.

I remember when you could send cd’s in a mailer made for them. But if you get a cd with a cracked jewel case, empty ones should be available in office supply stores or buy a ten-cent cd and use that case.

  • @pollystraub-cook6203

I send CDs to radio stations and publications around the world, hundreds a month. As long as a cd is NOT in a jewel case or a digipack; that is, if it's a sleeve, 4 panel or 6 panel wallet, it can go in a simple 6x9 envelope. You can send them through first class mail as an envelope and pay the 2 oz rate. That's 78 cents for US, 1.30 for Canada, and 2.43 for International. To that, you must affix another .30 in postage and stamp the envelope "non-machinable." The 30 cents is the surcharge for an envelope that is not flexible and therefor can't be put through the machines but has to be processed by hand. You can send non-machinable first class envelopes as long as they are less than 1/4 inch thick (hence no digipacks or jewel cases) and less that 3.5 ounces. Most are 1.8 ounces, which you round up to 2 oz. To verify, search USPS sire for "non-machinable" first class. I've never had a CD break in an envelope when packed this way.

    • @morecowbell235
      @morecowbell235 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good tips. I've done "non machineable" for other items that are not DVDs and you would probably be shocked how often they were machined and damaged. That and I would argue with clerks at the USPS about the rate that I should pay and what non machineable means. So many of them don't know and will try to overcharge you.

Could just be that your CD is heavier than most. Might have a thicker insert, or your bubble mailer is a bit heavy. Still though 5 ounces is fine since you want to be shipping these via Media Mail. And I believe the rate only goes up a couple of cents.

We need to stop using so much plastic, especially bubble wrap, which floats and is more likely to end up in the ocean. I'm looking for good and easy ways to ship without plastic. What I'm thinking is fold some corrugated cardboard around the cd, and put it in a kraft paper envelope. this is a little more work, and will weigh a little more. One concern is if it will protect the cd as well. Anyone have any experience with this?

When you make a sale (at least, on Ebay), they ask you to buy a shipping label. Which you then must download, and print out. If you don't _have_ access to a printer, though, you can use a QR Code, which the USPS person will scan, and place a printed label on your item for.

  • @wordivore

I wouldn't trust those plastic cases in a bubble mailer unless I put some cardboard in there to protect it anyway, putting the weight over at that point. I'd rather it go over and get it there the way it left me, rather than take a chance on a cracked case and/or messed up CD.

      Well, first... STOP YELLING.
Secondly... It depends on how you shipped the CDs. Are they all in one order? Or are they going to individual places? How many of them are there? If they are all in one lot, than the upcharge maybe from cramming too many items into one package. Media mail has a weight limit, of 4 oz.

Dude, how the hell does anyone make any money off of selling (in my case) Blu-ray’s? Like I have about 30 or so movies I want to purge from my collection so I figured I’d sell each one for I don’t know 7.99ish. Now I feel like those padded mailers would be the most cost effective way to ship them. I plugged in on EBay a Blu-ray for 7.99 that would be shipped in a 9x6x1 4oz first class package and the shipping says it would cost 3.80 to 4.20. Than I look at shipping it via media mail (which would cost 2.80) but I’ve read that apparently usps doesn’t like people shipping Blu-rays/video games via media mail (which makes no sense to me because, well, it’s MEDIA!). I feel like I’d spend less on shipping if I just sold them as a bundle so I’d pay only once. Sorry for the long post, any suggestions though? I’d appreciate the help!

Blue rays should be fine media mail. Video games are x no-no.
I always use calculated shipping, because after your shipping discount, it covers your eBay fees plus. I make about $1.50 on 1 cent items because of the shipping discount. (I only do this for things I got for free and know I can take pictures, list and pack in under 4 minutes, so even the 1.50 profit is 23.50 and hour before taxes.

@@epharonin1524 I use PirateShip to buy labels now.
I like ebay's UI that compares multiple services though, sometimes small 2-3 pound packages like when I ship a game console are actually cheaper Fedex, $8.30-ish once for me to ship a 3 lb 9x6x3, vs. over $9 priority mail. Services like PirateShip only use USPS though, and Stamps.com costs money to use each month. Ebay afaik doesn't let you just "buy" labels without selling an item?
A year after I made that comment, I am still curious if there exists a website or piece of software like Stamps.com or something that lets me compare UPS to USPS to Fedex (and others). Plug in dimensions and weight, get costs of each one.
ebay doesn't use Priority Mail Cubic pricing ever, while PirateShip and Stamps.com do, so sometimes it's cheaper for me to use PirateShip than ebay. A common 9x6x3 box is 0.1 cubic, the official USPS 6x6x5 priority mailing box is 0.2 cubic. When using them for selling videogames, I end up leaving ebay just to use PirateShip. lol
It's weird. I guess you just gotta pay for the full feature set. Surprised there's not a free tool to compare everything.
