This was when comedy was classic -- no swearing and just pure intelligence. Mr. Newhart was an incredible gift to us as was Mr. Carson. I am grateful that we have TH-cam so I can watch the old shows as Hollywood is not putting out much good anymore.
Watching great conversation, even from 37 years ago is "gold", I ponder why so many of us spend so much time here at you tube,,,,,,, is it because no one talks anymore, we just chat, and text on computers.
Two masters of the art of comedy just having a natural conversation. I could listen to this type of exchange for hours. Notice how neither one get down in the gutter with sexual innuendo or foul language? They have true talent. Bob Newhart is one of the best comedians in history. His delivery is unparalleled. Truly the best of the best.
I worked on the Newhart Show and he was wonderful to me even though I was only a voice. He invited me to sit at the table with the "big kids" and even gave me a dressing room. Apparently it was because he had enjoyed his days in radio.
Someone in the Tonight show fact-checking department was asleep at the wheel cause the show Bob was doing at that time was called "Newhart" and not "The Bob Newhart Show".

Bob Newhart can really hold his own. I love Johnny Carson’s quick wit and comedic timing, and I feel Bob Newhart is just as talented.

I grew up with this. And even a little earlier. I will take this over any modern talk show or sitcom any day. Everything is all dumbed down now.

Carson made banter into an art form. He was masculine but classy. Now we get giggly and prissy.
Both Johnny and Bob were at the top of their game. The nostalgia brings back good memories.
