I became aware of climate change when I watched Al Gore's documentary about 30 yrs ago. I found it concerning, but saw it as one more thing to worry about "in the future." I'm now 80 years old, so I will likely die well before that catastrophe strikes. But, the same will likely not be true for my great grandson, or his progeny. Yes, wars will continue and, with luck, we may not destroy ourselves by other means. But, if life survives, climate change will eventually finish the job. On the other hand, in about 2 billion years, the sun will envelope and destroy the entire earth. So, have a good day.

Just this year the Iraqi parliament, installed by the US, voted for the ejection of US bases, and they were ignored. A western Regime change has never really worked out well for any country that went through it, and Russia was invited in to provide support. Afghanistan is a longer story. Afghanistan used to have a 'king' or a sultan, until 1973, where the king was removed and Afghanistan formed a republic government, with elections. Five years later, in 1978 the saur revolution saw the national democratic/socialist party PDPA come into power. The Americans wanted to destroy this socialist movement just like they did in Iran, or Iraq, so they started funding the Mujahadeen, the predecessor to the Taliban, and instructed them to start terrorist attacks against the socialist PDPA government. the PDPA of Afghanistan was not a militant government. They were the first group to start radical changes to Islam, like sending teachers to villages to teach people how to read the Quran. The religious fundementalists didn't like it much, since they were 'religious leaders' and if anyone could read the quran, why would you need a imam (priest) to explain the word of god to you? Their positions were threatened. Some of the richest religious leaders and smugglers, especially up in north of Afghanistan became the funders and organisers of the Mujahadeen. Their first terrorist activity was to occupy villages, kill anyone associated withe the PDPA, especially teachers sent to reduce illteracy. The PDPA government couldnt stop the mujahadeen. They were getting a lot of money and arms from the CIA. to put it into perspective, the GDP of Afghanistan around that time was about 2.2-2.5 billion USD, and the CIA gave out about 500 million to the Mujahadeen, or about 20% of their GDP to the terrorists. the PDPA asked for assistance from the USSR, which was the only country that could and willing to openly stand up against the US CIA intervention. The USSR was reluctant to intervene. The Soviet archives shows that the politburo debated this issue on six different occasions for more than half a year before the soviet troops went in. They were invited by the local government, it was not an invasion. The people that fought against the USSR was the mujahadeen, not the Afghani government. The USSR had no experience dealing with terrorism at that time. They were brutal and waged war against the Mujahadeen like the red army did against the Nazis. If they could find the terrorists, the soviet army would wipe out anyone they found. In the process, large part of the northern afghanistan was basically turned into huge killzones. But for once, the PDPA government managed to have some stability and began development for real, like roads and hospitals. The USSR stayed in Afghanistan for 10 years, from 1979 to 1989. By 1989, the USSR was fracturing and there was no money or interest to keep this up. the PDPA knew that any more help from the USSR was not going to be possible. So the PDPA and the USSR agreed on a date for withdrawal, and the PDPA put together for a parade for the soviet troops as they drove back into Russia. By 1991, the USSR dissolved and Russia had more than enough of its own problems than to care about Afghanistan. After the USSR withdrew, the PDPA slowly lost against the Mujahadeen, but most of the country supported the PDPA and it managed to hold out until 1992, one year after the USSR dissolved and 3 years after USSR withdrew. Mujahadeen caputred Kabul, signed powershareing agreements with the local warlords, and began the terrorist rule, and later funded the Taliban from its younger members in 1994. It should be noted that other than the CIA, the Mujahadeen was also backed by Pakistan, and China. It was planned to create a "vietnam" for the USSR in Afghanistan, and it did in fact turn into a vietnam for the USSR. This mujahadeen and the later taliban, (and later ISIS) un-did a lot of the educational and islamic reforms under the PDPA and implemented very harsh Islamic laws. By 2001-2010, when the Americans actually invaded Afghanistan, the locals were fighting Americans with, ironically, American equipment leftover from those times.

When we invade 30 countries, not a peep on sanctions against us.

Study some history. Russian intervention in Syria it to preserve the current government and keep Assad from being regime changed by the west. A western Regime change has never really worked out well for any country that went through it, and Russia was invited in to provide support.
Afghanistan is a longer story. Afghanistan used to have a 'king' or a sultan, until 1973, where the king was removed and Afghanistan formed a republic government, with elections. Five years later, in 1978 the saur revolution saw the national democratic/socialist party PDPA come into power. The Americans wanted to destroy this socialist movement just like they did in Iran, or Iraq, so they started funding the Mujahadeen, the predecessor to the Taliban, and instructed them to start terrorist attacks against the socialist PDPA government.
the PDPA of Afghanistan was not a militant government. They were the first group to start radical changes to Islam, like sending teachers to villages to teach people how to read the Quran. The religious fundementalists didn't like it much, since they were 'religious leaders' and if anyone could read the quran, why would you need a imam (priest) to explain the word of god to you? Their positions were threatened. Some of the richest religious leaders and smugglers, especially up in north of Afghanistan became the funders and organisers of the Mujahadeen. Their first terrorist activity was to occupy villages, kill anyone associated withe the PDPA, especially teachers sent to reduce illteracy.
The PDPA government couldnt stop the mujahadeen. They were getting a lot of money and arms from the CIA. to put it into perspective, the GDP of Afghanistan around that time was about 2.2-2.5 billion USD, and the CIA gave out about 500 million to the Mujahadeen, or about 20% of their GDP to the terrorists. the PDPA asked for assistance from the USSR, which was the only country that could and willing to openly stand up against the US CIA intervention.
The USSR was reluctant to intervene. The Soviet archives shows that the politburo debated this issue on six different occasions for more than half a year before the soviet troops went in. They were invited by the local government, it was not an invasion. The people that fought against the USSR was the mujahadeen, not the Afghani government.
The USSR had no experience dealing with terrorism at that time. They were brutal and waged war against the Mujahadeen like the red army did against the Nazis. If they could find the terrorists, the soviet army would wipe out anyone they found. In the process, large part of the northern afghanistan was basically turned into huge killzones. But for once, the PDPA government managed to have some stability and began development for real, like roads and hospitals.
The USSR stayed in Afghanistan for 10 years, from 1979 to 1989. By 1989, the USSR was fracturing and there was no money or interest to keep this up. the PDPA knew that any more help from the USSR was not going to be possible. So the PDPA and the USSR agreed on a date for withdrawal, and the PDPA put together for a parade for the soviet troops as they drove back into Russia. By 1991, the USSR dissolved and Russia had more than enough of its own problems than to care about Afghanistan. After the USSR withdrew, the PDPA slowly lost against the Mujahadeen, but most of the country supported the PDPA and it managed to hold out until 1992, one year after the USSR dissolved and 3 years after USSR withdrew. Mujahadeen caputred Kabul, signed powershareing agreements with the local warlords, and began the terrorist rule, and later funded the Taliban from its younger members in 1994.
It should be noted that other than the CIA, the Mujahadeen was also backed by Pakistan, and China. It was planned to create a "vietnam" for the USSR in Afghanistan, and it did in fact turn into a vietnam for the USSR. This mujahadeen and the later taliban, (and later ISIS) un-did a lot of the educational and islamic reforms under the PDPA and implemented very harsh Islamic laws. By 2001-2010, when the Americans actually invaded Afghanistan, the locals were fighting Americans with, ironically, American equipment leftover from those times.
