    UPDATE: I've found that using the deinterlacing feature (in Handbrake) when initially ripping the DVD works best.

    Wow, I had the the model up from this which had a 80gb HDD inside, I got it so I could edit out all the adverts from shows before saving them to disc.
    Unfortunatly I got lazy, didn't do it for a while and the HDD failed >.> Even worse wa it was TV shows I was on :(

    Some notes: 1. A google search for the DMRE55 manual shows a listing to a PDF that dates to Apr. 4, 2002; in the manual under how to set the clock, it shows "4/4/2002", and the last page has a copyright of 2004 Matsushita. 2. There should be a 6th "speed" which is actually variable, called "FR" (flexible recording, i.e. F. REC on the remote), which lets you enter the recording time and it will fill the disc to maximize the quality accordingly. 3. That recorder should have some sort of TBC-like stablilizer in its processing chip that'll handle bad VHS signals just fine. 4. In Handbrake, click "picture settings" and use the decomb/bob filter, then set the frame rate FPS to 59.94. This will result in that smooth fluid motion and sharpness (i.e. sports) that more closely resembles watching on a CRT when played back on the computer (no jerky movement, and no "stairstepping" you would get when deinterlacing at 29.97 progressive, where it would throw out every other field, thus cutting the resolution in half). If you upscale the resolution to 980x720, TH-cam will interpret it as 720p60, and it will look and feel very close to how it looks on a CRT. See that file I sent u a while back, it was recorded on a similar Panasonic DVD recorder and ripped in Handbrake this way. 5. Deinterlacing the bad betamax footage using the "discard every other line" method, vs the blend method, should give better results. Two head VCR = 2 fields per frame, thus if the "odd" head is clogged, throw that one out leaving the even. 6. That ending - WTF?

    in my experience DVD Recorders aren't the best quality when it comes to the recording (due to MPEG2 Comrpession) However some recorders (Such as the Panasonic DMR ES-10 & ES-15) have built in video stabilizers in them and work really well as a Time Base Corrector, so you can plug the VCR into the input and the capture card into the output and it will stabilize the video pretty well.

    I still have (stored away with my S-VHS recorder) the hard drive version of his machine.
    A program called Video-Redo Plus (which I still use) handled the files from the DVD-Ram discs just fine.

    Recording onto USB Sticks kinda killed the DVD-recorder way before its time.The USB was so much easier and you didn't have to even remove it from the TV input, or in my case the Digital HD box.

    DVD+RW is the most versatile DVD format, which this machine doesn't support. You can add stuff to a disc without erasing what's already on it, and of course record right over it. I use my recorder to get the material onto disc, but then produce a final disc from that on my computer so I can have it start without an annoying menu if there's only one thing on it.

    Watching this because we cut cable years ago but we miss coming home to recorded stuff that we can fast-forward over commercials after manually programming a slot to record weekly. The TV guide isn't available anymore as the service went outta business. I paid about a THOUSAND dollars for this like a MILLION years ago.

    The Recorder is from November 2005. I fondly remember seeing this model at Wal Mart.
    I did end up getting a Panasonic VCR/DVD Recorder DMR-M522(I believe that's the model name) in October 2006. I ripped multiple Anime VHS recordings to DVD during an 8 month period until the Drive started malfunctioning in August 2007. Rather than Take it in for repair or refurbishing($300) , I went for broke and brought a newer one from JVC at Sams, the model I brought had a flimsy Tray that broke easily (which it did, rather the front logo)this unit lasted me up until April 2010 when I decided to replace the tray and pawn the Unit.
    In May 2010, I brought ANOTHER JVC DVD Recorder combo which I still have to this day which has HDMI . It has a VERY sensitive lens, so in November 2013(11 months after me and my Family FINALLY migrated to HD) I switched to Toshiba and now have TWO DVD Recorder Combos.

    actually DVD-RW formatted in VR mode ( if you could format them while lacking the remote) were the ideal set-up, they did not require finalization for playback on many computers or dvd players

    This DVD recorder was released in 2002 as others noted. My family had one. It was something that impressed us and we used commonly until the last part of the 2000s when it died. It got replaced by a Toshiba model.
    I think, that if it was marketed better, the DVD recorder would have made it. Sadly, they're almost impossible to find these days.

    • @billjoe39
      @billjoe39 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't the lack of marketing that did in the dvd recorder....it was the copyright paranoia from the wealthy hollywood bureaucracy and cable services, limiting the device's functions, plus the 2009 DTV turn.

    DVD recorders are pretty useful for getting stuff onto a digital medium and then importing to a PC. That's why I more like ones that can use RW's because then I can burn to disc, bring to PC and rip, then reuse! It's nifty.

    • @billjoe39
      @billjoe39 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      in fcat, it's less wear and tear on the recorder to use the slower speed RW media

    I had an off-brand DVD recorder (purchased at Walmart) around 2005 ... it did okay, but to me it seemed ridiculous that I was recording programmes (and basketball games, strangely, because I just *had* to watch them when I got home from work, whether or not I knew the outcome) onto DVDs instead of good ol' tape. In 2009 when I ditched my TV (I had no TV between 2009 and 2013), it went into a box and collected dust. When I got another TV, I discovered it no longer read anything. I'm not too worried about it considering I can play DVDs thru the laptop.

    I have a DMR-EZ28 from 2008. I got it at the Goodwill computer store for $10, and a remote online for $20. The unit and the remote together sell for $150 on eBay! It's a fantastic recorder/tuner and I highly recommend it. It records on DVD-R/RW/RAM, and it has HDMI to boot!
    I DO NOT recommend older JVC's. I had a DR-MV1 combo VCR/DVD recorder that doesn't read discs anymore... could be due to the crappy capacitors that they used at the time.
    In terms of a spare recorder, I have a Toshiba D-RW2SU from 2006. It's very basic, but does have ultra long record modes (10 hrs... I do not recommend that). I use it as a "portable" recorder since my Panasonic is in my gigantic pile of equipment on top of my TV.

    Okay, so according to the date on japanese manual for that device (from Panasonic's site in Japan), this model dates till 2004. So it's most likely it was made in 2004-2005. Zoinks.

    I had this very same model of recorder too (although European version,with scart connectors instead) given to me for free from my friend. Turned out that it had a very buggy PSU - it will only stay on standby mode,but as soon as you start playing some disc,it will shut down itself within a few minutes.
    On my findings it seems to be quite a common problem for most of pana's low end dvd recorders of that era. What a pity. :(
    Now it can only be used in "passtru" mode for stabilizing analog videos when capturing,and nothing else.

    I had this DVD recorder myself, and burned 100s of discs with it. Oddly, mine ignored Macrovision, even though it was supposed to block recording anything with Macrovision on it. Never did any Disney tapes, maybe they used a revision of Macrovision it was susceptible to. The only complaint I had with it was that it made discs that would not play in open source software DVD players (anything that used libdvd and libdvdnav.) VideoReDo fixed the video stream so they would work if I re-authored and burned them on a PC. I think a lot of set-top DVD recorders had this issue.

    I bought my DVD recorder in 2003 to edit DVD of my films in hight quality for my art school college.
    But this sh!t doesn't edit compatible formats!
    I have to travel all the time with my VCR in every exhibition I make since.
    No other DVD player seams to be able to play them.

    To bad the big media companys are preventing the sales of blu-ray recorders, and DVD recorders are now hard to find here in the US. I would totally buy a blu-ray recorder if electronics companys were allowed to sell them here in the US.

      Source?

    • @billjoe39
      @billjoe39 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      google 'why dvd recorders are becoming harder to find', the unreasonable clout of the hollywood studios and cable/satellite providers served to prevent widespread use of ANY sort of digital recorders, dvd OR blu ray. and it is not perceived widespread adoption of netflex or temporary copy DVR's services, an implementation which the copyright people probably came up with in the first place and which actually reflects that sort of mentality. .

    • @billjoe39
      @billjoe39 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      pr fo with the scheme that hollywood and it's ilk have now, it is actually a return to the 70's, pre VHS recorder period, where you can only watch things at leisure PROVIDED you have continuing subscription to a cable/satellite or netflix type service. Cancel them and you're out of luck
