Phil is back on the classical road today. He leads us into the world of ballet and into the glory days of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the conduction of Herbert von Karajan. Herbert von Karajan and his very own playing culture. To be heard in absolute perfection, here! One of his characteristics was that he usually conducted concerts with his eyes closed, which irritated so many orchestra musicians. However, they had been thoroughly prepared for the performances by Karajan's intensive work in rehearsals. "His philosophy was that everything the orchestra needed had to happen beforehand" recalled contrabassist Rudolf Watzel. Under Herbert von Karajan, the Berlin Philharmonic developed a playing culture all its peculiar, characterised by beauty of sound, infatuating virtuosity and perfection. He preferred the classical-romantic repertoire such as Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Wagner, Strauss and Tchaikovsky. In addition, he devoted himself to the Second Viennese School as well as leading composers of the early 20th century such as Ravel, Stravinsky and Debussy, and occasionally made detours into the contemporary with works by Messiaen and Henze, even Penderecki. Under Karajan's leadership, the Berliner Philharmoniker developed into a global player. Thanks to spectacular tours to America, Japan and China as well as countless audio and visual recordings. Karajan was a media man, open to all innovations in recording technology. With encyclopedic determination, he recorded his entire repertoire on records and later on CD. He also recorded many of his opera and concert performances on film. The media impact of the Berlin Philharmonic increased enormously due to the lively production activities of its principal conductor. An exterior sign of the orchestra's growing fame was the new concert hall, which Karajan vigorously campaigned to have built. The relationship, however, did not remain unsettled. Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic were considered a dream team. But the collaboration of the late years was overshadowed by disputes. Inevitably, and as a result of various controversies, they became estranged. Probably the most spectacular conflict in the public eye was the case of the clarinettist Sabine Meyer, whom Karajan, against the objection of the orchestra, wanted to engage for the Berlin Philharmonic. In April 1989, Karajan resigned as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic after renewed disputes. Three months later he died in Anif, a district on the border of Salzburg Austria Now, I take off my "tutu" again, I don't think it looks right on me anyway, and say as always: Thank you 🙏 dear Phil for the perfect tonal presentation of "Swan Lake". Goosebumps. R.I.P. Heribert Ritter von Karajan
