That happened to me last summer. Auditioned for a group that had some really solid songs. The guitar player/singer tells me straight off "I am a drummer".......umm okay. He kept trying to one up me on drum trivia and gear selection. I passed on the gig because he was looking for a drummer that wasn't better than him. Mike is an incredible drummer. "Pressure and Time" is a killer drum groove song!
Early on, I was ready to play with just about anybody, anywhere.just to get out and get experience. I've sat in for "a couple" of songs that ended being several because the singer really liked what I was doing. I've finished the night for a drummer friend that decided to party hearty because he knew I could do the gig. Attitude is as much or more important than totally awesome technique. I'm more of a Ringo/Charlie type although I used to be more busy/heavy when I was younger.
Steve Goold is so great! I took lessons from him during the pandemic - he helped me prep for my audition for Berklee until he had to go on tour with Mat Kearney. He also taught me how to set an Ableton session for a professional show, which was great not just because the drummer often gets that job, but also because my band was getting ready to do a bunch of shows and we were going to use Ableton
Really enjoy the TH-cam version of the podcast….Big fun to listen to all the questions and answers. Found the Rival Sons back in 2018 great band and vibe….
We do them monthly with my online students. As well, jump over to the podcast channel linked in the description. This is the type of content I'll be putting up over there.
It is all about the spice and flavor that a drummer can add to a band as a new comer, and when to add that spice and flavor :) I really dig Rival Sons music too, great band.

Could you comment on how you rehabbed after injury? Not discussed much - since I think we all fear the injuries and don’t want to talk about it
Which injury? I've had a lot of them over the years haha
I’m going to see the Rival Sons on the 7th of November in the Netherlands! 🤘🏼
Make music swing !
You’re one consonant away from my dad’s name.

Michael Miley is such an awesome drummer. Rival Sons is one of my favorite bands. Seeing them twice in a row next week!!
That makes me feel better. I guess I’m not getting any gigs cause I’m just too damn good!

The secret is the pre-gig potty run
Truth. And sometimes I still have trouble making it 100+ minutes
El Estepario Siberiano. He's someone almost every drummer could learn from.
